I've heard about anesthesiologists doing basic research in areas such as neurophysiology. My question is, how hard is it for anesthesiologists to get funding for basic research and how would you split up your time, ie. would you devote 60% to the lab 40% to the OR, or could you specialize in pain management devoting some of your time to the lab and some to seeing patients. Any input would be greatly valued. Thanks.

The bottom line in academics is that you have to bring in money. You can do that by seeing patients or getting grants. If you can't get the grants, then you've got to see more patients. While you're spending 60% of your time in lab, you're competing with other investigators spending 100% of their time in lab.

It's not impossible to merge the two, but you should talk to someone who is doing it to see what their split is like.
