Do you realize that the CEOs/CFOs were a significant reason many PP were sold to AMCs? The word was out among the hospital executives to cut anesthesia group stipends to the bone. If the group wouldn't go along then force them to sell out or take them over. HCA did this to many groups in Florida resulting in the collapse of private groups which got no buyout.

Quickly the environment deteriorated to the point that most groups receiving a stipend were scared/terrified that their company was going to become worthless; so, many sold out to AMCs in order to appease their hospital CEOs/CFOs. The AMCS would offer to cut the subsidy and complete the buyout making the hospital management temporarily happy.

Years later HCA realized that the monster they got in bed with was truly sucking large sums of money from them. HCA made a corporate decision to cut ties with that AMC at many locations.

Other hospitals realized the same thing about AMCs. Low quality, poor staffing and large subsidies were recurring issues. The hospitals began to realize "in house" staffing or local groups were a better way to obtain anesthesia services.

The reasons for the rise of the AMC are multifactorial and their downfall will be multifactorial as well.
You NEVER get something for nothing. So in exchange for no subsidy the management groups got into long (multi-years) agreement with the hospital system, they got control over the CRNAS and DOCS completely and how they practice, they got exclusivity, and they put the CRNAS and DOCS under non- compete agreements to assure the hospital system(s) would be hurt significantly( financially and PR) if they decided to cut ties.
These are EVIL entities you are dealing with.
Some places do manage to cut ties... Charlotte comes to mind.... but these are very risky endeavors... Smaller hospitals have an easier time.

This is 1 of the reasons I say go look for an outpatient specialty.. psych, FP, IM, Allergy. this way you do not need to get into messes with the above entitities.. Who wants to move your entire family at 45 years old , pull them out of middle school becuause the hospital CEO and y our employer cant get along.. thats the pits.. It is what Suicides are born from.... There was a suicide in a well publicized takeover in recent years.

Blade is correct. Most of the old “not for profit” Methodist/Baptist/Catholic/etc, hospitals started selling out 15-20 years ago to the HCA’s/Triad/etc.

With that, came a HUGE difference in the way these entities were run. You didn’t have “local” CEO’s who stuck around for 10-15 years. Instead, you get the “journeyman” CEO’s, who are looking to “polish” their resume by cutting costs and making a few capital improvements. All they wanna do is keep their job, and eventually land in some “plum” location. They don’t care about the long-term outlook of the hospital or quality of care.

They started forcing out old groups, and older groups at other hospitals quickly realized their future had nothing to do with quality care, but strictly the whims of the “3 year CEO”.

At that point, the smart move was to sell your group before the contract was taken away by some low-bid AMC, who cared more about obtaining “market share”, than treating employees fairly. Sure SOME of it was greed, but much of it was simply selling out while you still HAD something to sell.

And , NO, it wasn’t greedy churches selling their healthcare systems to “get rich”, either. The government and insurance companies have gummed up the works SO much, that many of the religious systems simply couldn’t keep up, anymore.

l The government and insurance companies have gummed up the works SO much,
I would say more the government then insurance companies.. The way to bring the insurance companies in line is allow insurance companies to be sold across all state lines and let everyone participate.. DONE!! Problem solved..
But the govt is so ****ing corrupt that they make rules favoring some and eliminating others from competition..
