Okay.....couldn't find much addressing this specifically.

Is it okay to get 2 letters of recommendation from the same academic EM program. One is from the PD whom I have known and worked with for about 8 years. However, another faculty member offered (without me asking) to write me a great letter. I hate turning down letters, but will it look weird that two of my SLOR's will be from the same place and possibly be using the same evals for two different letters?

as usual.......I expect many excellent responses and for somebody to tell me exactly what to do (j/k).

thanks,

I wouldn't think that having two different faculty at the same program writing you letters would be a problem at all. You will have seen different patients with each person, and their experiences with you will be different in at least that regard. If you've really concerned about the duplication of evals, you might want to mention it to the second physician to see if it will be a factor at all.

If he/she is willing to write you a good letter, by all means take it. Worst case scenario - if you don't like a particular letter, you don't have to send it to any programs.

It doesn't hurt to have more letters than you need. At my school, our application lady would read my letters and give me recommendations on which ones to send to specific programs... she didn't have the absolute best judgment, but it was helpful... I'd be surprised if your application lady/guy won't do the same for you.

Yeah, I figured it couldn't be too bad to have 2 letters from the same program.

I got two letters from Vandy when I did my away rotation there. Both the PD and the Chair wrote letters. This was definitely not a negative as I had both of the letters come up in most of my interviews.

The director of my school ED wrote a collaborative letter with some of the faculty - one letter with three signatures. That impressed a lot of programs I interviewed with and, combined with a PD eval from a program I rotated with, and an internist, probably got me my match. I would try the combined writer approach and consolidate them into one letter, leaving you free for 2 more from other places/disciplines...
