Miracles do happen! I just got an interview invite from Pitt this afternoon!!!! 🙂 😀 😍

I can't even begin to explain how happy and ecstatic I am. So for everyone out there, just keep your faith and know that everything will work out in the end. I promise you I have been down in the dumps a few times, but look at how wonderful life can be.

And this is my 4th interview invite, so everyone on this thread...don't lose hope! It can happen!

I imagine that most people who get interviews with a lower MCAT score probably saved an African country or done something extraordinary in their communities.

I have been mostly getting rejections from MD schools. I think its partly due to my 8 in verbal and my mediocre ECs.
 
Honestly, I have no super-amazing EC activities. I just made sure that each of my activities clearly indicated my strengths and that all of them combined to show that I was a well rounded person.

I would say it may have to do more with the mediocre ECs than the VR score; that's the national average. Don't get me wrong, I also have pre-interview MD rejections, but that is part of the game we are playing. Did you apply broadly?

I completely agree! I did not cure a disease or do something outstanding. But I have such diversified ECs and experiences, that I think that makes my application more interesting and shows how well-rounded I am.

29Q MCAT & well-rounded ECs...2 MD interviews (both WL)...
I think it's great that so many of the folks on this thread has been accepted into a MD school. Unfortunately, I think my MCAT and ~3.4 cGPA are holding me back into the WL pile. It seems like it's really hard to get off waitlists too...

Whereas I'm really happy for everyone, I'm really nervous and sad now...with 2 WLs and 0 acceptances. I am still waiting to hear back from a dozen schools, but :cry:
 
For people that meet the criteria of this thread and got 4+ interviews, did you find that you were getting interview invites later in the cycle? (eg october-december?)

I have a 27Q and I've received 5 interview invites so far. Some were early but others were later (VCU: 8/14, Wayne State: 9/7, Oakland: 9/29, Rosalind Franklin: 9/30, Penn State: 10/22). I submitted my app for Penn State about a month later than everything else, so the late invite may be due to that.

We're literally twins in every way you mentioned. Especially the nervousness and sadness.. I'm starting to freak out here! :boom:
 
Seven interviews with a 28, a 29, and a 30 lol.

Maybe its my GPA and dashing looks?😀

Congrats on your invites Metagirl14. I have an mcat score of 26 (did take mcat last year, and my best sections add up to 27) and havent received a single interview invite yet. I believe my EC are decent. I hope schools show me some love soon.

Thanks. I received WAY more invites than I expected so this process is seriously not all about stats. Keep your hopes up! I'm sure some invites will be coming your way soon! 🙂

I got an interview today at SIU with a 26 mcat. 3.80 gpa... but I'm a central/southern illinois resident
 
Everyone keep your chin up! I promise you I was sooooo worried earlier in the cycle because of my MCAT score, but some schools really really look at you holistically. Just apply broadly! I haven't given up faith and I know it will all work out for the best.

Oddly enough, MD schools are showing me much more love than DO schools.

Just let them know how interested you are and try to have some form of constant contact with the admissions office and/or committee.

I've been kind of silent on here, usually just read other posts, but feel I need to post. I have a 25Q, 2.85sGPA, 3.53cGPA. This is my first cycle applying and I was invited for 12 interviews and 1 acceptance so far. It CAN be done. It comes down to more than just numbers sometimes. I have very very strong ECs, a LOT of clinical experience (I'm a practicing health professional), and a desire to be in medical school. I know sometimes it feels really tough and we get down on ourselves, but never count yourself out! Keep your heads up!

nice thread...but a lot of you have high GPA's to make up for the mcats.

what if it was the opposite...high mcat..gpa on the low side 3.4-3.5?

The impression I get is that they care about the MCAT more, so you are probably going to do just fine! :luck:
 
Are there any CA residents on here with MD invites? I've had 4 DO invites, and 2 DO acceptances so far and I am VERY grateful. But I'm still hoping for at least one MD interview this cycle! I think coming from CA makes it much harder.

Hey Kalu!

It's definitely possible for a CA resident (yeah it's harder only because there's no in-state preference, but hey living in california makes up for it haha). Stay patient and I hope you applied broadly.

Just curious, what health field are you practicing in? I have some clinical experience/a lot of research experience but I want to have a health-related job when I graduate this coming spring (Univ of Mich Class of '11, Baby!!!). I'm glad you decided to post! Our stats are almost identical (27Q, 3.1 sGPA, 3.4 cGPA)...Thanks again for deciding to share 😀

do you think they become more concerned of the low MCAT after the interview? had over 10 interviews but acceptances seem rather hard to come out at this point. Getting a little worried. (attended 7 so far)

Honestly, I couldn't tell you. I just started interviewing last Monday and have had 2 so far. I really won't start hearing back until December. But I can't imagine them inviting us to interviews without being able to look past this one thing. And I tend to interview really really well. I'm a non-traditional applicant so I have practice interviewing. In my undergrad I interviewed for many internships with top companies and got all the offers. I guess all we can do is wow our interviewers. In the end, only time will tell.

How many schools did you all apply to and how many interviews and acceptances did you get?
 
5 interviews out of 35. 2 acceptances, 1 WL, 1 no response yet, and 1 I withdrew from. plus 6 pre-interview rejections and 24 silences. I don't care if I get any other interviews. I am just happy to have not one but two acceptances.
 
Applied to 44 (37 MD, 7 DO)

So far, I have:
10 pre-interview rejections (all MD)
9 interview invites (5 MD, 4 DO)... attended 5 of these with an upcoming interview on Dec 6
1 waitlist (MD)
1 acceptance (DO)
waiting on post-interview results at 3 schools (MD)... hopefully, some of these will be acceptances.

At this point, I haven't heard anything from about 25 schools (23 MD, 2 DO)

When I got my MCAT score back, I felt like everyone looked at me differently because I had a very good GPA and a lot of people expected me to do better. One of my friends talked like DO school/low-tier MD schools aren't even worth applying to because he apparently did pretty well on the MCAT. I have two acceptances this cycle and he has not interviewed anywhere yet.

It's your attitude and gratitude that gets you somewhere. There is hope.

same MCAT with high GPA but my friends were encouraging even though i know it was disappointing I expected me to do better lol but 12 interviews including harvard attended 8 WL at 1 and accepted at Hopkins!!!! all MD schools
 
Just got my first acceptance with a 26Q and 3.7 GPA. Decent EC's but I think what did it for me was my interviews, they went really really well. Anyway, it can be done!
 
Stats: 29Q, 3.5 cGPA 3.3 sGPA

Interviews: Case, OSU, Wright State, Wayne State
Waitlisted: Case, Wayne State
Accepted: MSUCOM (DO)

Still waiting on a billion things....but I'm grateful that I even got waitlisted @ case!
 
With a 27, I received 4 interviews (all MD programs) and an acceptance to Creighton University so far. I have yet to hear from the other programs regarding a final decision.

Although my MCAT is awful (and I've taken it 4 times and I'm a 3rd time applicant), I have a pretty solid GPA (3.9) and a lot of research experience -- clinical research, laboratory research and clinical trials (phase I) involvement. I honestly never through an acceptance would happen ... especially this early in the cycle (11/2).

i have a 29 and sub-avg stats (<3.5) and i have 4 md interviews.
 
Well 26/3.5 gpa.

I have three interviews. All top 30 MD research universities. 2 acceptances including my first choice.

So many thought that it was not possible for me to get to med school. But some schools do look past your stats. And I am proof of that.

I had a 29S and a 3.96c/3.93s and I've had 4 interviews in TX (Texas Tech in Lubbock, Texas Tech - Paul L Foster in El Paso, UTMB, and UTHSCSA) and so far have had 2 MD acceptances at UTHSCSA and El Paso. Some people I know with the same "z-score" as me have had fewer acceptances... so it just goes to show its not ALL about the numbers. But you do need to have something that compensates for the sub-30 mcat to set you apart. Also, don't get too bogged down by statistics in the MSAR for "accepted students"... When I got my MCAT score back, initially I cried and cried because the average MCATs shown in that book were 31 and up for all the Texas schools. It wasn't until my UTMB interview day when they showed us a set of statistics for the actual ENTERING CLASS of 2010 (average mcat which was only 29!!) that it hit me that those average MCATs in the MSAR are for ACCEPTED students... (in the MSAR it said it was 31).. According to this http://www.utsystem.edu/tmdsas/2010 TAAHP Statistics.pdf UTMB accepted about 3 times as many students last year as matriculated... and of course, most likely its the bottom third that ended up attending because the top people who got 35's which raised the average mcat in the MSAR aren't going to end up even going to UTMB, but will go to UTSW or Baylor. So it's really important to look at the average statistics for the matriculants, not just the "accepted" range. For instance, UTHSCSA's MCAT in the MSAR is listed as 32... but the average for this year's entering class is only 30. And both of the Texas Tech schools I'm pretty sure the average is about a 28-29 for the entering class. So have hope! If you're just shooting for an average school that's not ranked as high as UTSW or Baylor, you'll be just fine as long as the other aspects of your application are in good shape.

What annoys me is that I know people who have low stats/mediocre ECs are getting invites (and acceptances!) to UCI/UCD too...whereas all my friends with stellar research, extracurriculars, and grades are not hearing a thing from the UCs...I myself don't have stellar anything so I'm not complaining, but it's just such a random process. My friend even said that one of the guys with an acceptances is a ********.

Ooh well, to each his own...and good luck to them if they're getting into a UC.

yeah it is random. there are certain things that stand out to those reviewing our secondaries etc. in the end, at most schools you get a broad spectrum of people ergo making it a diverse class.

I agree with you there...it's just that one of these kids I know about is literallly someone you would not expect to be a doctor..lol. He's not very bright..and just loves to **** around all day...doesnt even go to class or have decent stats...we were all just shocked. But more power to him, he's clearly got something good that UCD saw.
