Hi I'm new to this board, going into my 3rd year of bio undergrad and preparing to get into vet school. I have been reading this board and I never have read anything about Cornell. I would rather stay close to home and avoid paying more money to go out of state...I'm just really afraid is Cornell is so elite and hard to get into that nobody speaks of it??? If you have any experience with Cornell please share..Tips are appreciated also 🙂

I would've loved to attend Cornell. I didn't have what they're looking for.

Off the top of my head, I was told by the current admissions director that they like to see four different veterinary experiences (ideally four different categories, such as small animal, large animal, zoo, shelter, etc.), with very competitive GPA and GRE scores. I think they take the highest GRE section you have, so if your math is higher two years ago, and your highest verbal is now, they'd take those even though they're not the same test dates.

Regarding veterinary/animal experience, she said breadth, not depth, is what's important.

Not sure if you've ever been to Ithaca before. I love the town and area, but some find it too rural. Their open-house was good; I attended two years ago. I think it's in April?

Their curriculum is unique since it's case-based learning. If you do a forum search on "Cornell", you will find previous discussions of this and other Cornell stuff.

Hi,
I applied to and was accepted to Cornell off of the alternate list. A far as experience I had a wide variety--3000 hours with a small animal vet, 100 hours each with a large animal vet and a behaviorist, 250 hours at a zoo, 40 hours with an alternative vet and several types of research experience (field work in Patagonia (guanacos) and Costa Rica(leatherback sea turtles). I don't know if you need to get such a variety but it doens't hurt. I was testing out different interests in a variety of fields. You will need to get letters from everything that you list on the supplemental as a veterinary/animal experience. You can list stuff you can't get letters for on the VMCAS. As far as grades/GRE goes I had a 3.9 and a 580 on verbal and 740 on math.

I eventually decided not to attend Cornell as I was not completely sure that the case based system was for me and decided to go with the mix of lecture and case based at Tufts.

Good luck! If your in-state I would say it is assuredly worth the cost of applying--if you don't apply you won't know if they would take you.

If you want other advice PM me.

Anna
