Any news from OHSU?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
medworm, are you talking in-state or OOS? Also is this from last year, the last 10 years, or what?
Oh, and is that just MD or MD/MPH applicants? Any idea?

I've got news - I called yesterday and they told me that I am not getting an interview. Apparently they just made this decision and have sent out a big batch of letters. Might be worth calling or you can just wait for the mail I suppose.

This thread prompted me to call the admissions office (I work for OHSU). They said that a letter is on the way and I scheduled an interview over the phone for March 7th. Yeah... What!!!

I like your quote.

so you guys who had the successful calls, were you at 12 weeks yet? i don't hit the 12 week mark until the end of next week, so i'm sort of nervous about calling. their voicemail message basically says to go away until after 12 weeks, which is not the most encouraging.

Hey Ex,

I actually called because I had another inquiry but the woman over the phone let me know that I was invited for an interview. I was about 7 weeks from my complete date. Good luck, I hope you hear good news soon. :luck:

Ummmm...are you talking about MD/MPH? Because MY letter explicitly says that the last possible day to interview, for anyone, is March 2nd. It even says something to the effect that, if you haven't come in for your interview by March 2nd, you will not be able to interview for the entering class of 2006.

You might want to re-check to make sure it's not really on the 2nd.

I forget the exact date, but my "final day to interview" was somewhere near March 16th. I had the option of several days, from Feb 15th( I think) till March 9th... so I believe the final day depends on the date the interview was offered. Just my 2 centavos. Peace, and I'm outta here. What!!! OK!!!! Yeah!!!

I'm pretty sure they just give you a month-long window in which to schedule your interview. So, if the first avaiable time was in the beginning of Feb. they won't let you schedule out past the beginning of March. The first available slot for me was mid-Jan and the last date available was in mid Feb.

Does anyone know when the next admissions committee meets?? They told us at our interview that we would hear back in February but I don't remember if they mentioned it would be early or late in the month.

Okay, I just left a message for Cathleen (option 2) because I realized I actually am at 12 weeks -- I hit it on Tuesday. So how long will I have to wait to get a return call, if I get one at all. Do you guys hit option 2, or is there some better option.

This whole thing is so frustrating. I was talking to someone last night who goes to Portland State, and she said that they're having workshops and stuff like that to produce more qualified Oregon applicants, with the idea being that OHSU doesn't accept many of us because we aren't good enough. I cry BS to that one. If an instate person with my numbers (again, not great, but good) doesn't even merit an interview, then I don't see how they can claim they have a commitment to accepting instate applicants. Lots of solid Oregon candidates don't get admitted, so whatever. 😡

update on my saga. i got an interview invitation today. mine says i have to interview by 3/23. complete 11/2, interview invitation 1/28, so i guess when they say 12 weeks, they're not kidding around.

Congrats! You've been waiting on that for so long. 12 weeks 🙂.

I love Oregon, and I used to almost lived there too since I was only 40 miles south of the border, in CA. But alas, this was not good enough to be considered an Oregon resident.

Good luck at your interview. :luck:

Thanks! It has felt like a long, long time. I heard OHSU made you wait, so I guess I was warned. Did you live sort of close to Ashland? It's so pretty down there. 🙂

Yep. We used to go on field trips there to see Shakespeare plays when I was in jr. high/high school. Ashland is oddly bohemian in a pretty conservative area.

Congrats exlawgrrl! You must be so happy to finally hear from them! 👍 😀

I called OHSU around the 23rd, so I don't want to call again to see about an interview... as of that date I was still in the running as I was in the "missions pool". I am getting worried though, now that everyone is getting letters for interviews in March. If I don't see something in the mail by Tue. or Wed. I guess I will be out of luck. 🙁 That would be very disappointing. I suppose I will just have to keep waiting a little while longer.

Congrats exlawgrrl!!! I knew you would get an interview...your stats are impressive! (I think so anyway!) 🙂

I got one out of the same batch . . . six dates, from 3/14 to 3/23. I was complete in November and the letter is dated 1/26, so I guess it's on schedule.

I'm so relieved. I live five minutes' walk from OHSU, and I'm in their ER on a nightly basis with patients, so I guess they figured it would be awkward meeting me in the halls and averting their eyes. 😉

I told you! Good job! 👍

thanks, guys! i'm so used to whining about ohsu, so i don't know what i'll do with my time now. 🙂

congrats to you, rsfarrell! maybe we'll interview on the same day. i'm calling on monday. since i live in portland, it doesn't really make any difference which day i interview.

for those who've already got an acceptance...

did u guys get the acceptance packet yet? it said that we should receive it about 1 month after we receive the acceptance letter....but so far, i have received nothing...

anyone else??

Good luck to all you Oregonians!!!

Reading this thread is making me sort of glad that I moved, why are they neglecting the in-state students so badly? 😕 I expected better from OHSU.

I don't know when you interviewed, but I interviewed 12/15 and just got an acceptance today (over six weeks) Maybe they were delayed by the holidays though. So i'm guessing that the committee just met last week.

Thanks, it sounds like I've got a while to wait then. I just interviewed on 1/3. Congratulations!

Surprise acceptance in the mail today. I'm really excited. OHSU was one of my top choices after I interviewed!

this thread was already on the third page!!... has anyone heard anything else at all?... i hope i hear something next week... getting ready for week 5...

Is there anyway to email OHSU?

I called them on Friday.

(I called the main number and they transferred me to admissions)

They told me that I was in their non-Mission's Pool. Which I believe is that set of states outside the specific geographic region that OHSU considers friendly and they told me that they decided 2 weeks ago that they would not be interviewing anyone from that pool.

They also told me that they'll be sending a letter explaining this in about 2 weeks.

I am from Texas. Does this mean I will not be interviewed? 😕

I don't think so. (is from Missouri) If you want to be sure, I'd go ahead and call them. Not much to lose at this point...

Then again, they said they'd be sending that letter in 2 weeks so it's not much longer if you're the patient type.

I called last week, but there was this long, intimidating message on the answering machine saying you shouldn't call about your status. Should I just go ahead and ask anyway? Thanks for the info.

Dunno about the message. I just called and got a person on friday (again, I was transferred from the main number). Do whatever you feel comfortable with....

My opinion though.

If they're not going to offer me an interview just because I live in a certain state, they should have the decency to tell me that now, not make me wait at couple of weeks. So I'm glad I called. Just my opinion.

i'm an Oregon resident and i was rejected, thanks ohsu.

I was put off by that phone message too. My need for information is not 'urgent' so I am going to wait patiently for my rejection letter in the mail. 🙁 Good luck to you!

thanks Depakote...hopefully things will work out at another school, never give up!
good luck in this crappy process!

Does anybody know when is the next add. com. meeting going to be? Do they meet once/twice a month?

anyone here on the waitlist? Supposedly OHSU sends acceptances and post interview rejections to very few people and waitlists the rest but i haven't seen anyone say they were on the waitlist... if you were waitlisted did they tell you your score or give you an idea of your rank or do they make you wait till may 15 to tell you where u stand on the waitlist?

they don't interview any OOS applicants with below a 3.6-3.7 GPA and 32 MCAT. they have strict cutoffs, but they don't tell you this on the secondary. i think they make exceptions for the MD/MPH program.

I think they make exceptions for under-represented minorities and people from rural or disadvantaged backgrounds too. Also, I heard that Oregon resident applications are way down this year ~220 instead of ~350 in previous years (but I heard this second hand).

Interesting -- I wonder why. Maybe we all assume OHSU won't take us anyway, so we don't bother. 🙂

Does anybody know how if OHSU gives out merit-based scholarships to members of their incoming class? If accepted, I would absolutely love to go to OHSU, but the $40k OOS tuition is a bit steep.

Thanks, and good luck to everybody!

I also heard that OHSU was a little deceptive about how they present tuition. Students pay by the quarter and 1st year is three quarters and 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years are 4 quarters. So although they state that tuition is 29K (IS) and 40K (OS) that is only first year, all of the other years you pay for four quarters or 38K (IS) and 52K (OS)!!! 😱

I sent an e-mail to the assistant dean of admissions asking if there is some way I can get feedback on my app (I'm an OR resident) and what I need to do to be competitive at OHSU, it's been weeks and no reply, so I sent another one, still no reply. I also e-mailed another admissions officer, also no reply...

OHSU will give you feedback. I've talked with several Oregon residents who got feedback last year after being rejected. I doubt they will talk to you before the interview cycle is over. I'd try in May, but don't give up. Sorry you didn't make it.
