Hello y'all!

I'm an M4 at UT-Memphis, and I am heading elsewhere for internship and residency. Just in case anyone is looking for a midtown home that is near school I am offering my house as of this point.
If you'd like to take a look, the links are below. This is a midtown victorian in the Evergreen Historic District (I usually make it to campus in about 6-7 minutes). Just check the links below to take a look if you wish.

If you decide to attend Vanderbit, you had better resolve not to tell jokes like that. You'll get a cold stare. Meth production is a VERY SERIOUS problem in TN.
do they insert the stick in your butt before or after classes start at Vanderbilt?

Any future/current UT Memphis girls out there looking for a place to live? I will be attending Dental School starting in August and I just bought a house in the midtown/cooper-young area. It's a 2 bed, 2.5 bath townhouse on S. Edgewood street that will be ready to move into in about a week. If your interested, send me a PM 🙂

Got my "financial aid" letter a couple of days ago. Loans, all loans 🙁

Ahhhhh!

I'm going nuts...trying to decide between ETSU and UT right now (have a few waitlists as well, but not holding the breath 🙂) and I'm having a hard time. Each school has its merits and though I *was* 99% UT, I'm waffling now.

The thoughts of being in a beautiful mountain setting, with no parking stress, brand new building, no having to take notes for the other students, cheap housing and awesome faculty/staff make ETSU awfully appealing. But......I'm worried about residency placement if I decide to go into a specialty that's a little bit more competitive than peds/im/fp etc.

Why did you all choose the school you're going to attend? ETSU or UT? Help!!!

I think the basic science training at each school is equivalent. However, the clinical training at UT is second to none in my opinion. ETSU is in a better setting and the campus overall is better than UT's, but the clinical training was not as strong overall. If you want to do family practice, ETSU is a great choice. But, ETSU does not have rotations available in certain specialties. Therefore, you'll be forced to do an away rotation to get that exposure. Myself, I decided to pick the school that offered more in terms of research and clinical training than one that was in a more laidback and comfortable setting. The way I see it, med-school is only 4 years. So, hopefully I can dodge enough bullets to get a great education. Just my humble opinion.

I don't think you can go wrong with picking either school. They both have incredible programs with so much to offer. A big part of med school is what you put into it. That is probably the greatest determiner of what sort of doc you will. I personally chose the ETSU route for the reasons madrigail mentioned but also given the fact that I have a wife and a son (due July 4th). I thought UT had an awesome program but I knew that I would be missing out on anything if I went to ETSU. The tri-cities area is actually bigger than Chattanooga and has a huge population base when you consider all the region that come in for care. Given that some of the sites are more rural, you will have more than enough hands-on opportunities, even with trauma at JCMC if you seek it out. I think the merits of both schools are obvious and I think it is unlikely you will make a "wrong" choice either way.

Anyone have any idea how variable Memphis has been going to the waitlist in years past? I've heard that on average, they take about 45% of the people off of the waitlist. I'm in the upper 1/3, so this is good news, but I'm still biting my nails, anyway.

I'm guessing there could be more movement than years past given the tuition hike (was reading a med school guide in a bookstore printed a few years ago when tuition was 10k per year), but I'm sure that's just wishful thinking.

I was told by one of my interviewers that it varies from year to year. However, last year I believe it was around 55 people (~1/3 of the class). He also said that they'll literally have people drop out a week before class and offer acceptances the week before classes start. Although, I'm sure that's not very encouraging, that's what he said. One suggestion; if you're friends with a faculty member at your school, you can get them to write another letter of recommendation. But, like I said, make sure your friends with them and they understand your position. Its usually not a good idea to pop another LOR on people unless your close to them. It may not help by the 15th, but it's always good be safe. It would suck to be listed behind the last person accepted. I would make sure to let the committee know in every polite way possible that you're very interested in the school. Good luck

I was in the top third of the waitlist for UT and got my acceptance call the first week of June. People make most of their decisions around the May 15th deadline. I figured I was somewhere in the 20-30 on the waitlist. If you are in the top third and they have the same movement as we did, then it'll be somewhere in June you'll probably have your acceptance. Don't fret too much about it now. Just make sure they know you still want to go. Send Diane Harris emails etc. Just make sure you keep in touch with her every few weeks.

I am in the middle third of the waitlist so I am hoping that lots of people decide to go elsewhere 😀 .

Just hold in there. A million things could happen. We just got an email today giving us nice threats to get all our stuff (off. transcripts, health documentation, coat size, etc...) or else they might give away our seat to someone else. You never know what could happen.

What goes on during the orientation week? I'm assuming we have the whitecoat ceremony, get our anatomy groupa, go through the schedule, learn about books, learn how to take finals, etc.

Do we do this in a class setting? Small groups?

You do it in a class setting mostly. We are trying to make your orientation week fun for you. Our new social chairs are awesome! Our class is gonna take y'all to a lot of bars. There is a bbq on Monday. We are gonna try to give you tours. We will bombard you with a lot of info you will not remember til you get it again. You will learn about SASS-Student Academic Support Services. You will meet your big sibs. We will be having our PCC/DRSS Week that week so we will have lots of free time to help you all out. Hopefully you won't be as bored as we were. All that will happen after we scare the crap out of you!!! Do you know the fire hydrant analogy? It's very true. All of you better have fun this summer! 😉 Now back to studying my brain away. (Yes, I actually think my brain is strinking.)

Do Big Sibs get to choose who they want? I hope my friend Seth chooses me if that's the case. That's one smart kid.

And I'm definitely trying to get my ya-yas out this summer while I can.

Which just came and went!

... and brought me my acceptance to ETSU! Somehow I've known for at least a year that it would turn out this way. Just one of those gut feelings, you know.

Regarding the other TN school, I'm in the bottom third of the waitlist.

Oh, and as far as the gut feeling ... note my avatar ... it's the Bay's Mountain spillway just north of Johnson City.

Freaker has LANDED!!!

I got the call from Memphis today!!! Woohoo! My first acceptance!!! I'm gonna be a doctor! Very happy day.

Very good odds that I'll be calling Memphis home for the next 4 years...

Hi all future UT ladies. I have posted before, but not w/ much luck, perhaps b/c it was too early...
I am looking for a housemate for my 2 bed, 2.5 bath townhome in Midtown. It is in a great part of town, < 5 min from school and w/ in walking distance/short drive of several good restaurants/bars (not that anyone's going to have a lot of free time to be spending in bars). Rent is $475/mo which includes water/trash/cable/internet..., but not phone or 1/2 utilities (should usually be around $30/month). I am starting dental school in 2.5 weeks - AHHH - so the room is ready...PM me if you are interested...thanks 😀

Looks like this will be digging up an OLD thread....

I am from Martin (UTM) and will be attending ETSU starting in 2007. Currently in Afghanistan for Army fun! Anyone else new here planning on heading to ETSU?
