Any word from BU?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was away on vacation last week and came back to find a big envelope from BU in my mailbox. This is really wierd seeing how I DID NOT reply to their January email and ask to be re-evaluated. I simply hoped they would just remove me from their applicant pool.

Guess not. My letter of withdrawl will be mailed by the end of the week. Good luck to all.

I heard from witzburg that if you are on the waitlist, and you are willing to stay on it for as long as it takes, then you will probably eventually get off.

Also, i was told by my interviewer that Witzburg wants to admit people off of the waitlist for those who really want to go. My interviewer told me that Witzburg likes it when people call his office and ask to speak to him about getting off of the waitlist, apparently he takes note of who called. You should be sending letters, calling, etc. if you really want to go, Witzburg is a personable guy and the way the admissions there is run seems very subjective.

"This group is not ranked and includes only those
applicants for whom we hope
places will become available prior to matriculation in the fall. "
_how the heck do they decide who comes off in what order???

28th waitlistee here. That's odd cause I bombed pretty early in the interview.

Maybe the "files" are really short. There could be a stack of papers with one line entries on the applicants.

pls accept me--lame-o
pnasty--would probably go to NW instad
Gracey103--ugh another UCI applicant

20 interviews!!! 😱 WoW! Thats a lot..I went to 6. When did you interview at UCI? I met a couple of UCI peoples at my interview. I met one other guy from UCI at my BU interview. Other than that I didn't really meet anyone else from UCI. I am going to start hounding the UCI admissions office with letters and phone calls. I actually called Gayle yesterday and asked her what I needed to do to get off the alternate list. She told me to send update letters if I did anything new or new letters of recommendations. But she said that letters of intent are usually useless because med schools think that all their applicants want to go to their school. She says its a misconception that alot of applicants have about letters of intent. I have a couple of friends that are first year UCI med students and they all got off from the alternate list and said that almost half their class and the class before them is from the alternate list. Gives me hope.
I think I interviewed with them back in December. The other anteater interviewee was at UCI on that day too.

Did everyone who was waitlisted get the email on the 29th, or are they still coming in. Still no word here-- so guessin its accept or reject.

OK so i'm number 30..it's all good - the wait will be annoying but OH MY GOD i wasn't rejected from BU yet!! After so many flat-out rejections from schools i truly thought I had a chance at, this is amazing! I just hope if i DO get off the waitlist it won't be mid-August or anything, eesh i hope i didn't just curse myself

Big packet today in cali when I got home from work. I might withdraw, though, so there could be another spot. Will have to think carefully about it. Good luck to those on the waitlist!!!!

OMG... just got in... Cali here too (Bay area). I was pretty shocked cus I have below ave stats and all and not an URM 🙂 Anyway, good luck everyone!

Were you supposed to reply to the Jan email? I think I saw "deferred" and then stopped reading. Eh, whatever.

you're back to number 29 on the sdn list. i'll be giving up my waitlist spot tomorrow...just got in at my top choice 🙂

received an acceptance email today from my interviewer. However, i'm going to withdraw so that opens up a spot. Good luck to you guys!

Has anyone tried talking to Dr. Witzburg over the phone? Was his response favorable?

I called the office today to ask about what Dean Witzburg said at the end of the interview day. I was told that indeed, if you're willing to stick it out on the waitlist as long as necessary, it was very likely but not guaranteed that you would be accepted eventually. So cross your fingers. =)

When you responded that you wanted to stay on the waitlist, did you email them a short one liner or a letter of interest? I have a carefully written letter of interest but im hesitating whether to snail mail or email it.

Just one line about wanting to stay on the waitlist. I'm going to send in a letter of intent, separately, closer to May.

Anybody know if youre supposed to send a response if you can not make it to the open house, or only if you are?

I think the open house is optional and if you do not plan to attend the response is only required if you want more info about the school.

Maybe he meant short compared to the 10,000 applicants . . .

:meanie: <-- his face when he came up with that little selling point

after speaking with witzburg, i found out that the bu wait list is restricted to only 3000 of the top applicants, the entire roster of the 1989 new england patriots, two used soft drink cups, and santa claus. fortunately, santa got into his top choice, freeing one spot in the class of 2010. although the list is unranked, i've heard on good authority that one of the soft drink cups will get an offer before i will.

seriously though, was anyone rejected or were we all "waitlisted"

Asked a 3rd year BUSM for advice on the waitlist and she said to have persistence and that people get in off the wait list up to the very last minute before classes start and to not give up.

Also, I'm pretty damn sure they rejected people. But how many people would like to post that? And honestly, the admissions committee would have an easier time picking people off the waitlist if it were indeed small.

Lastly, 30 people posting on SDN does not mean an impossibly huge waitlist. So Tarsier says "Keep the faith people."

I hope you're right. I was thinking the same thing (about 30 pple on SDN). You never know how representative of the entire list our little thread really is. It differs for every school on a variety of different issues (willingness to post, non SDN members, etc) so hopefully, there are a lot of posting BU waitlisters on this thread. We'll see. :luck:
Question though - do you think it would be unprofessional to send a letter to the dean via email? Since BU sends all of their mail this way, I'm assuming it wouldnt be a big issue, and its faster....what do you guys think?

If it's to keep on the waitlist, just e-mail them so they know. I mean Dean Witzburg says you have either option. And as neurotic as we all get here, I don't think he's playing mind games with us and where an e-mail means you're an dingus and snail mail means you deserve a full-ride acceptance.

If it's a letter of intent/interest or an update letter, I'd send it snail.

Tarsier out.

I merged my waitlist acceptance and letter of interest into one letter and sent it via email

I did the same...sent both via e-mail. I don't think it really matters how you send it. I am sure it gets placed in your file either way.

I;d have to agree with Mr. Tarsier. The people at admissions are always flooded with email. If it's something as important for your file as a LO interest/intent or an update with recent updates, it seems like paper (with signature) is the way to go. You could always send it via email and drop a paper copy in the mail.

So, are you saying the admissions office would not accept intent letters via e-mail?! That is crazy because they do most of their correspondence through e-mail. My application was processed late at BU because my letter of rec was lost when it was sent via snail. I am not taking any chances this time!! I agree that if someone decides to send it snail...it couldn't hurt to send it through e-mail to make sure it gets there.

Hey, I said nothing of the sort. I am just suggesting that if it is something as important as a legally binding agreement, you should sign it and send a paper copy. Send them an email too, and call to confirm receipt. Things get lost in email as well as snail mail, so take these steps to ensure that doesn't happen.

I meant letter of interest...not intent. My mistake!

do we know the soonest they'll start drawing from the w.l.? is it once the first person withdraws or on may 15?

The earliest anyone would hear would be the last week of May. Most people hear in June.

Oh ok... well letter of interest is probably not as important and im sure it will end up in your file either way. Since the list is unranked, showing additional interest is good way to convince the powers that be to admit you.

I sent my letter of interest/update letter via email. I sent it in early december, I never checked to see if they got it. I think that sending one is a good idea though, I think it helped me out. It was the only school that I sent an update to post-interview, they seem to want to know why you liked it there and why you fit there.

Anybody know if there has been any movement on the BU Waitlist as of late? Has anyone here been accepted off the waitlist yet?

To reiterate what kingercer0x said... we probably ain't hearin' til end of May at the earliest. I do wonder why they don't just decide as soon as people decline.

Probably because they accept double the amount needed. Who knows?!

I thought I heard somewhere that med schools can only have as many acceptances out at any one time as seats in the class. I thought the high acceptance numbers that you see in US news are due to med schools having to play the game of offering up spots once someone notifies them of a withdrawl. So...theoretically BU should only have as many acceptances out right now as they have spots (around 160 I think)
Could someone second this...is this true or just a rumor I heard?

hahahaha, if only things really worked like that....definitely NOT true

My premed advisor must be misinformed (as usual) I sent her an email after I got waitlisted at BU with some qualms and she's the one who dispensed that info to me.

no good news from BUSM for anyone yet?

I think BU is stuck in a hold pattern. I was told not to expect any movement until at least the end of June...ugh...

heard the same thing. sorry to bump the thread for no reason, just interested in seeing if there's someone out there who's gotten a friendly call from witzy recently

Wouldn't worry too much about the "end of June" claim from the admissions office.... found a waitlist thread for BU from a few years ago, and people started getting calls right around now, yet others who called the admissions office were still being told the list won't start moving until the end of June. Think it's just a line they use...

I have been trying to find threads of past info for BU's waitlist...if its not too hard for you to find again, could you post a link to the thread you mentioned? Thanks!!! 🙂

D-Bone would you care to elaborate? What is this hold pattern and did you hear this from the office?
Does anyone know if its just that the committee hasnt taken any action on the waitlist or is there no seats available yet?
