I'm pre-med and I really want to go to ECU, I did a search and couldn't find any post about ECU. Has anyone here planning on applying there or interviewed?

:hello: ME

Whats up dude, Ill be applying there next year. Eventhough, ECU might not have the greatest scores in the world, all the doctors I have met from there seem very competent, friendly, and intelligent.

That is good to hear, i'm an NC resident and I would really like to stay in the state. Besides that's a good deal on tuition compared to other schools. I plan to apply there next fall too. Good luck!

Gluck to you too!
You cant beat the lowest tuition in the nation!😀, and plus they do give out some full scholarships, I know one guy who recently got one from my school.

Also I believe they accept mostly in state applicants & hardly any OOS. Someone can check that if I'm wrong....

They only accept instate, if you are OOS, no matter if its 44/4.0 you are gone.

I like ECU...A really nice campus, but the town is not so great.

Are the scholarships at ECU merit or aid based? I'll apply someday, but right now I'm in my freshman year of college.

Pretty much every school will have some of both merit and need based aid.

They have need based, but the guy I know got a merit based one. He didnt have to apply for it, they just offered it to him, because they really wanted him there. BTW his numbers werent super either. 29 and 3.7

hey there

i was complete at ECU in early October and I still haven't heard anything.

Has anyone been rejected from ECU yet or waited 2+ months to hear anything?

What are my prospectives for having waited this long with still no word?

Hey folks,
I have been lusting after ECU for a couple years now, and just interviewed on Friday. I can't say enough about the school, and really hope I am accepted there. The faculty, students and staff were wonderful, and the interview was incredibly low stress. It really fits with my style, which is oriented towards more hands-on patient care than research, numbers and competition. (Not that they don't do research). The hospital is huge, and construction is ubiquitous, including a new heart tower that promises to be amazing. I know I sound like a tool, but it's true. Greenville, the city, isn't the greatest, but it's not too far from Raleigh and the Beach, so you can always run away on the weekend. As for #s, This year roughly 800 students submitted apps, ~400-500 interviewed, and 76 will get accepted (increased to 80 next year). MCAT average was 27, GPA was ~3.5 overall. They average handing out 110-120 acceptances to fill out their class, and admitted students on a rolling basis, with the last interviews in May. There are four merit-based full-ride scholarships, to which everyone is automatically applied via their AMCAS, and many other need and merit-based scholarships. The admissions office is great, and if you call/email or write them I'm sure they'll send you any info you need. Alright, I think those are most of the high points I remember, If you have any other questions, let me know, and I'll try and find out. Good luck to all,
Josh 👍

33T - I had to wait a while for an interview date as well. They are still scheduling interviews all the time, so keep the faith. If my timeline is any indication, they'll be offering interview dates until early/mid April.

I agree with Paramedicman. I have a friend that goes there and she loves it. She said it isn't cut-throat competition like you would find at many(if not most) other schools. The class size is small enough that everyone is close, but not too close.

I interviewed there last year with a low MCAT and GPA. It didn't take long to get a rejection letter (like 1 month maybe?), but I wasn't expecting to get in. My MCAT/GPA are now up some and I am interviewing beginning of Jan.

Like he said ---^ "don't lose the faith." Sometimes they are just backlogged with interviews, so don't get down on yourself if you haven't heard yet. I would call them every three weeks or so just to make sure you haven't missed anything. I don't know if they put a note in your file that you called, but last year, I got my interview like 1 week after calling to check on the status. Good luck to everyone and keep us all informed!

Ok its official i love ECU, them and wake forest have THE nicest staff.

This is probably going to sound like a dumb question but forgive me, I'm not yet an expert on the process but...from what I understand ECU focuses alot on primary care, would this have any effect at all on trying to gain acceptance from a surgical or specialty residency?

They have people admitted every year to all kinds of residencies, Derm, Oto, ortho, and plenty of generaal surgery. Still, 50-60% of the graduates do go into primary care, and I think that is more because of choice than anything.
I dont see why ECU would hinder you from getting itno a speciality as long as you ahve the grades and board score.

In fact, I read somewhere that while they do put emphasis on primary care, there main goal is to increase the number of practicing physicians in rural NC..
So if you plan to go into Otolaryngology and you go to a place in rural NC that doesnt have one then you are still fulfilling their mission.

I'm not sure I understand the "surgical or specialty residency" portion of your question...

But, yes, they are VERY focused on primary care, almost to the point where they will strongly consider not admitting you if you state prior to admission that you want to specialize in something. Granted, if your stats are off the charts (3.8-4.0 and 38+MCAT) they will probably admit you anyway.

Generally, most people that go to ECU are interested in primary care and are more likely to stay in eastern NC to practice.

Hope this helps!

I dont think that is necessarily true, look at my above post. THey might consider you more heavily if you are interested in primary care, but there main goal is to serve the underserved regions of NC, especially eastern NC.

You can accomplish that through internal medicine, Peds, EM, Ortho, Urology, or even Derm. I would be honest with them. If you want to do something surgical, tell them, but make sure to explain how you will still fit in with their mission.

I don't think that is their MAIN goal. From what they told me last year when I was there and from their website, they "set forth a three-fold mission for the ECU School of Medicine: to increase the supply of primary care physicians to serve the state, to improve health status of citizens in eastern North Carolina, and to enhance the access of minority and disadvantaged students to a medical education."

So obviously, if you want to practice medicine in Eastern NC, you are high up on their list, but if you want to practice primary care in Eastern NC, you are even higher. Put it this way: if two applicants with the exact same statistics and same interview outcome, but one wanted to be a Radiologist, and one wanted to be an Internist, they are probably going to give priority to the applicant who wants to be the Internist.

Regardless, ECU is a great medical school regardless of what field someone wants to go into...especially for the price!! 😀

I agree with amwatts 0322. From what I was told by my interviewer, ECU is more interested in serving Eastern NC residents than primary care. Primary care is good, but asking a pre-med what they want to specialize in is tough to do. I was told the Primary Care or you don't get in thing is more of an urban legend than the complete truth. Remember, an honest answer is better than lying, and after many interviews, they can tell. Also, while 50-60% of their grads are "primary care," remember that also includes internal medicine, which any future cardiologist, etc... has to do before specializing. Thus, the statistics can be rather deceiving. As always, this is just my (one) perspective, and every urban legend has a grain of truth in it somewhere,
Josh

I am so happy there is a post about ECU, which is strange since I am from Canada.

I will be moving to Greenville to practice nursing at PCMH in the MICU. I realized this year (3rd) that my heart lies not just in caring, but Dx'ing and Tx'ing paitents as well. What can I say, this stuff is incredibly interesting to me.

ECU looks like the home for me should I decide to apply to Med school in my mid 30's (sweet jebus, I will be in debt until I am 50ish). Naive as I may sound at this time, I really see myself in either a)Pulm/ICU or b)Emergency Medicine.

I realize that ECU focuses heavily on promotion of primary care, but I really do not think that a Family Practice will fulfill me like a Diagnosis intensive practice like my two choices stated above. It isn't a money thing, it is a personal interest/goal choice. Infectious Disease isn't off the table either, but I have been reading that it is not very 'procedure intensive.' I want to be able to have both thinking AND hands on approaches to a lifelong practice.

Do any of the ECU hopefuls have specialties in mind? I love talking about this stuff.

Expat,
Congratulations on the big move, I hope you'll like it down here. It's kind of obvious by my screen name but I will be going into Emergency Medicine. Most of the people I talked to said it won't be a hinderance, and ECU has a really good EM residency program and great EMS education. The other thing they do well (outside of Primary Care) is infectious diseases. They have a traveler's clinic as well as handling the traditional nosocomial infections. As for Pulm. Med I don't know. Also, don't worry about age, I am nearly 30 now, and in some ways the experience in life and in medicine has helped me a lot, and I think it will make you stand out from the crowd too. Regardless, hopefully I'll be seeing you in the fall,
Josh
