Yep, mine was also cashed. Now I got to go rob a bank so I can pay the next 500 bucks in March.

Since you guys/gals are going to be going to Nova, you might know the answers to these questions. (by the way, I ask these questions because I am considering Nova myself)

-What is the NDBE part I and II pass rate?
-FL Lisc. Exam pass rate?
-How does Nova rank against other schools in pass rate for NDBE part I and II?
-Does Nova postdoctoral like to take students from their doctoral (dental school)?

-Anyone know how many people have already sent in deposits for next year? Or, how many spots are left at Nova for next year?

All very good questions.... I wish I had some answers for you. Keep this thread alive and someone will have some answers eventually.

bump!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yo, do you guys know if we have to buy the schools laptop? Because if thats true, they are very overpriced and are a ridiculous waste of my money.

I already have one, and dont want another.

Any current students know the answer to this?

-Thanks

I heard there was a curriculum change too. No more summers off for D1s and NBDE part 1s in the summer (july).

Eh, we shall see how it is.

Gluck yall

Did anybody else get a packet for the Application for "Florida Student" Residiency Certification in the mail? I just got one today and was wondering what are the pros and cons (if any) of becoming a resident besides saving on tuition? I mean, looking at the NSU brochure:

Tuition for 2006-2007
Florida Residents = $34,245
Out-of-State Residents = $36,985

Seems like you're only saving $2,740 per year if you become a resident. So far, that is the only pro I can find about filling out the application. I am a Californian and plan to practice dentistry here in California. Are there any cons in becoming a Florida resident during the 4 years at NSU, then switch to becoming a California resident after?

Good question about the laptop. I am wondering the same thing. Also, any answers to any of the above questions?

Something else. For those of you who interviewed after Dec. 1 and got accepted after, about how long did it take to get your acceptance letter? Did they also send an email or update via AADSAS?

I interviewed Jan 6th and got a phone call from Dr. Lippman like a week ago about being accepted. I still haven't got a letter though. No AADSAS update either.

As far as I know, your status as a Florida resident (for tuition purposes here at Nova) stays the same for the 4 years that you will be in dental school. In order for you to classify as a resident, you will have to live here for 1 full year before the date of matriculation.

Also, I don't think you can use your own laptop. They want everyone to have the same one for technical support reasons.

Ya... after reading the packet, I realized that I didn't qualify for the application since I'm not living in Florida "a year before matriculation". Oh well.

As far as the laptop question, I asked the tourguide during my interview the same question, and he said that you MUST purchase a laptop from the school. It comes with the tuition or something like that. I believe the laptops they have are Dell Inspirons. Sorry, forgot the model number.

I'm going to Nova!

Im going to NOVA too!! im so excited! when do you guys plan on getting a place to stay? how far in advance should i start looking?

I could swear I saw students with different laptops in class. Im going to argue with the laptop deal. I know I can find a cheaper laptop somewhere. They should also know alot of us are in undergraduate college and already forked out 2 grand for a laptop already. They should just have CPU, Ram requirements, software requirements. Do we have classes on CDs or what? I know 1500 dollars in books sounds like we will use books only, but I dont know.

If you argue your way out of having to buy their laptop, let me know. I'll follow in your footsteps.

haha, we can have a class protest....but they might kick us out of school. So its not worth it.

Alright, let me attempt to clear up the laptop issue:

Yes, you are required to purchase the school's laptop. It does not matter if you already own 5 brand new laptops and 2 desktops, you still need to purchase the school's laptop!

The Dell Laptitude that the school make you purchase is a pretty powerful machine. When you arrive, your laptop will most likely be more powerful than mine. Everyone is required to have the same laptop because if something goes wrong where you need technical support, our IT techs can fix it on-site. If everyone comes in with a different/their own laptop, when something goes wrong, NSU IT techs can't learn over 100s different kinds of laptops and their specs.

Secondly, the software installed on your laptop requires certain hardware specifications! Even you have an up-to-date, brand new laptop, it is not guaranteed that your laptop can handle the the software used at our school and curriculum.

Third, all NSUCDM laptop has certain required hardware installed within like the smartcard reader for faculty to sign your procedures. How many of you have a smartcard reader built in your laptop right now? None! Thank you.

There are many reasons why NSUCDM require you to purchase a laptop to go with your dental education. Trust me, it's not a waste of money! Here are some of the specs of my laptop:

Dell Laptitude D810:
PROCESSOR, 80536, PENTIUM M DOTHAN, Pentium M Dothan, 1.86GHZ, 2 MEGB, 533FSB, PLASTIC GRID ARRAY, C0

LIQUID CRYSTAL DISPLAY, 15.4WU, D810, SAMSUNG

CARD (CIRCUIT), NETWORK, 1370, PURINA MILLS, UNITED STATES, LATUD

MODEM, MODEM DAUGHTER CARD, 1.5, HERMES, LATITUDE, LEAD FREE
CABLE, TECHNICAL SHEET, COAXIAL, D-FAMILY, WEST

DUAL IN-LINE MEMORY MODULE, 1GB, 533MHZ, DDR2, 2X512

MOUSE, UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS, 2BTN, LOGITECH, LATITUDE

CARD (CIRCUIT), GRAPHICS, 128MB, ATI TECHNOLOGIES INC, M24

HARD DRIVE, 60GB, 7.2K, SMALL FORM FACTOR, IBM Moraga, D810

COMPACT DISK READ WRITE/DIGITAL VIDEO DISK DRIVE COMBO, HITACHI LG DATA STORAGE, Latitude DMOD

4-year Complete Care accidental insurance policy

Let me just tell you, just the 4-year accidental policy is worth the money. I recently damaged my laptop and Dell was not able to repair it so they replaced a new laptop for me with better specs (listed above), my original laptop, Dell Laptitude D800, has less bells & whistles. With this Complete Care policy, you can drive over your laptop, Dell will replace it for you for free of charge, no questions asked! In addition, you laptop will have lo-jack tracker installed, so if someone steals your laptop and logs onto the internet, then we can track your laptop down.

Again, it's not a bad deal for $2700. It's a bit bulky, but a great machine! Also, you all will be using the VITAL SOURCE DVD crap too! This is new, your class will be the 2nd class to use the Vital Source. One more perk with that price, you'll receive a sweet stylish computer backpack along with your laptop. $65 value. I wish I had the bag you guys will be getting. The bag we received was huge and ugly.

Enough of laptop answers, no more questions.

Well as long as we get a stylish bag, I'm totally cool with it. Style is all that matters to me. The whole laptop thing doesn't bother me because I don't already have a laptop. I don't know what 75% of the specs Yah-E listed even are, I'm totally computer illiterate. :scared:

Andy,
I think that our pcs are greatly over-powered for what we ACTUALLY do in pre-clinic and clinic. At a blistering 7 pounds and 14x10", a $2165 (price I paid) machine for signing off requirements in clinic and checking e-mail during class seems wasted. Why not have a slimmer, light notebook to carry around? We are dentists and lugging a large brick on our backs is not good for future income potential! It would be nice to see some choice in PCs... there really is not much variability in laptops for software technical support.

Now I do, however, understand why our school has chosen only one model to sell to students, it's easier to manage across the board. A 4 year warranty is nice, but I wish they supported batteries. Mine now lasts 15 min unplugged. A new one also costs $150.

True, not many have built in card readers, but for $60 bucks, we could have a card installed into a slot in our pcs.

I am just not a fan of Dell pcs, desktop nor laptop. Poor service and poor components make a bad combination. Case in point, several students during my first year had to replace hard drives within the first month of having their brand-spanking-new computer. Did dell send a brand new hard drive with a letter of apology? No way... they got a refurbished hitachi hard drive and had to endure hassle of sending their laptops to technical support.

Pre-dents, now remember, choosing schools based upon their laptop requirements will not get you far. We as a school, however, have some of the best quality clinical instruments and prices on those instruments that you will find in academia (I would know because I work on the instrument committee). All of our instruments (anywhere from curing lights to explorers) have a 4 year warranty... sweet.

Hope this helps,
-Mike

P.S. If anybody is already thinking about a class protest, you guys will have plenty of time for that when you get here. Don't get yourselves off to a bad start because there is absolutely, positively no way of arguing your way out of buying that laptop. Period. Now if you want to have some fun and you already have your own laptop, bring it... I'll get it configured for you so it works in the pre-clinical and clinical area. Then take your D810 and sell it on eBay 😉

Does anyone need a roomate? Anyone going to NOVA that needs a roommate and is in Florida so that we can meet prior to signing together?

Thats crazy I was just about to post the same thing. I need a roommate. I live in Nevada so I won't be there until like June or July but you should PM me with your email or something. When did you interview because I remember there was a guy from UF who interviewed with me. I'm just guessing that youre from UF because of your name. But yeah get back to me for sure.

Has anyone been able to set up a new NSU email account with the information they sent in the mail?

I'm having trouble setting up my email account...says I haven't been "formally admitted" to my program. WTF does that mean? They've cashed my acceptance check.

Anyone having the same problem??

Also I got a financial aid letter saying something about me not being fully admitted. When exactly am I "fully admitted"? Is that after the 3rd deposit is sent in?

I'm confused.

For those of you who have been accepted already... does Nova update Status via the AADSAS website? Also, flossin have you got your letter in the mail yet?

Nova hasn't changed my AADSAS since they invited me for an interview. I got my letter like on Friday or Saturday I think. I sent in my money today so thats pretty much all I know about.

Where is everyone from who is going to Nova? It seems like were from all over the place. I'm from Nevada.

I got a letter saying I wasnt formally admitted yet too and that they couldnt process my FAFSA. I also had to fill out the NSU Authorization form. No biggy.... But I panicked a little when I said I wasnt fully admitted.

But I guess we all arent fully admitted yet

Did your letter come via regular mail? Or another shipping company, like UPS or FedEx? ALso, did it come in a regular size envelope or a larger size? Still waiting.....

Regular small white envelope

guys does any1 have the stats of the accepted last years class for Nova? I think there was a thread with all the schools but I cant find it. Thanks.

I will be attending Nova starting this July. Yay! I can't wait to meet everyone! 🙂

Dental school at Nova starts in July?

Yeah, but at the end: July 31st!!!

Well, the first day of class is August 7th. The week before is just orientation.

Where did you find this out, Sk8aBull?? Did you call or did they sent you information in the mail?

Coral is right on this one. July 31 - Aug 4th is Orientation & White Coat Ceremony. Class at NSU-CDM always start on the first Monday of August each year, which will be Aug 7th.

I just wanted to add that the laptops are nice, and no matter how much arguing, protesting, or whatever you do, will you be able to get out of purchasing them. The powers that be started requiring laptops for the 2003-2004 year, so all the seniors had to purchase one also. We petitioned, argued, protested, to no avail. We still had to get one, and since they had just started with them, they were used for basically printing and surfing the internet during class... 😱

At Nova, be careful with expecting to get accepted at one of the residency's just 'cause you went there. The year I graduated, not one single person was accepted from Nova (that graduated that year) into the ortho program, and there were some very worthy candidates, with great board scores and well rounded individuals.

Well, to me, school starts July 31st because I'll have to be there. Just because actual "class" doesn't start, to me it is still school b/c I can't sleep in till noon and relax all day lol. If I have to go to school that day (even though it is orientation), then that's the first day of school. I need to be in Ft. Lauderdale by the 31st, for the first day of school.

Hey All...

Just thought I'd let you all know we'll be seeing eachother at Nova this Fall. I found out this last week that I was accepted... can't wait!

Congrats!! 👍 Where you from?

I'm another one from Utah... how 'bout yourself? I guess technically I'm still waiting to hear back from one or two other schools, but I was very impressed with Nova and it would be hard to say no to my acceptance.

Does anyone's status who was accepted to Nova say anything other than "Offer Made"?

My status hasn't changed for almost 2 months... Is there a point when it will say anything else?

hey, flossin' and mrc... does your aadsas say offer made?

nope, still "invited for interview"

Just thought I'd throw in another BUMP! Anyone else decided on Nova?
