Anyone heard from UCSF yet?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I found this on Ucsd 2011 thread by jindopowa.

"I talked to someone on the admission committee.. She said that they make up a list ranking people according to best overall score (interview + application and everything else), and send letters to the top scoring individuals after everyone has been scored. Then after those people reply, they send out more letters based on how many people have rejected. I think UCSF has the same system. I do know that they share their lists.. "

Any idea?

Well when James was talking about the pervious classes he did note that in 2004 (I believe) more than 20 people rejected UCSF's admission to attend UCSD. So, it does seem as though they share lists. Hmm I wonder if it works against you if you got rejected from UCSD but interviewed at UCSF? 😕

Why do you think it works against people who got rejected from SD but interviewed at SF? I didn't have a good feeling when i heard that too, but share your insight~

The guy at the UCSD interview said that they share the list of accepted applicants as they send out the acceptances. I highly doubt that UCSF will look at UCSD's list, see that you're not on it, and will therefore like you any less. If anything, the fact that students went to UCSD instead is just more of a reflection that a lot of the applicants are really good that they interviewed and are subsequently accepted to both schools, and then chose to go to UCSD instead.

Don't worry, I totally understand all of this freaking out. I think because we're waiting, we are totally overanalyzing every little detail of the process. But it's all over and in their hands and we can't do anything but hope that they randomly pick our application earlier than later. I'm thinking they'll send more out this week since it's been two weeks since the first "batch". Cross our fingers 🙂

Thanks for sharing. I think u are absolutely right that we are overanalyzing. I do tell myself everything is in their hands now and all we can do is to stay optimistic. We should be proud of ourselves making to this stage, as James said. 😎

1st batch? on this website, only 2 people got the acceptances and i'm sure about 4-5 more people got it outside of this forum. on their website, they just send out acceptances as they review ur application.

and isn't weird that on this webiste, people who got into UCSF haven't heard back from UCSD and vice versa

I didn't apply to UCSD, although I can't speak about the other person who got in.

I haven't heard from UCSF yet, but was accepted to UCSD.
I have a hunch that UCSF might wait for me to respond to UCSD first. Same goes for UCSD. Buuut it's just a hunch.

when did u interview at both schools? if so, why would UCSD send u a letter first b4 UCSF? i mean they can't say we'll let UCSD send the acceptance first and see what he does?

the reason they share lists is that when u get accepted to BOTH schools, they don't want u to accept the offer from both school. and if u do, they know that and they'll pressure u to choose.

my friend got in UCSF and UCSD one week apart last yr. she chose UCSF immediately of course but UCSD still accepted her a week later. so i doubt that they'll admit/reject u base on what u choose.

the point of the list is to prevent people from holding spots at BOTH schools. it'll delay them giving admissions to others.

I haven't heard back from UCSD, but I don't think that has to do with some communication between the two schools. I did not fare as well in my interview at UCSD compared to my UCSF one, so that's probably why I haven't heard back from UCSD yet. What senzabee said about everyone overanalyzing everthing is probably true. Don't worry, March is coming up very soon and I'm sure many more acceptance letters will be coming up then. Good luck to everyone and just try to relax. 🙂

Yeah, I have this big conspiracy theory in my head. Just ignore me!! =) You're probably right - that they don't admit/reject you based on what you choose..

I interviewed UCSD 1/29, UCSF 2/3.

no u could be right. but UCSF has 122 spots and UCSD has only 60. so i doubt that's the case. my friend's situation seems to confirm that.

but u could be right. but it seems wrong to do that.

but if u accept UCSD and get rejected from UCSF, then u could be right. but i hope that's not the case. if you're a great candidate, UCSF should accept u and u should have the option to choose.

doublehh03, I think you're freaking out too much at what people are saying. Don't take the word "batch" too literally. I'm just thinking that the admission committee meets once a week, maybe twice or more even, to go over the applicants they can for the duration of their meeting. Hence, everyone they review and accept will go out in a batch that day. Who really knows how they do it, they may have even looked at everyone by now for all we know. Lets just breathe and save our energy for when we run to the mailbox 🙂

i think you're right. they review as they meet (like they say on their website) and the ones who are great they accept initially.

but idk, we'll wait. hope to have news this week.

I'm going to use Zwigglez and BoltsFan as examples because they got in already and can rest assured already 🙂. But let's say that, by random pick, they were not pulled during last last week's review and somehow were at the bottom of the pile. They are both as good candidates as ever, but it just so happens that their file is not looked at until the very end. Will they still get in? More than likely, of course. Does it mean anything that they would subsequently get a letter in the end of March instead of the end of February? Not at all. Not that Zwigglez and BoltsFan aren't great people, which I am certain they are, but I think having gotten a letter is part "luck" of the draw (that is, the reviewers drawing their applications to review first). Because they really got letters early doesn't mean they are overly fantastic (which they probably are anyways). Just...lucky. Okay, I bet other readers are freaking out that people got acceptances because this thread is being updated every 5 minutes 😛 haha. We'll all talk more when we hear more news!

i think you're right. i think that's how they do it. i don't think they have looked at every application (including interviews) yet. UCSF website said that people who hear first are just the ones who got their file pulled first.

don't know how UCSD works though but most likely the same way. so i don't think our interview date has anything to do w/ when your file is pulled.

Pull me next! Pull me next! My roommate is even getting concerned every day that I don't get mail from schools. My nervous aura is penetrating those of non-applicants around me. Gotta love that. Today she called me at work and wanted to make sure that the schools had my address right! LOL! 😛

What you guys are saying sounds totally legitimate....I just really wish this would be over soon, because I can't help but feel like every time someone gets accepted, that's just one less available slot for those of us getting pulled later. I mean, if your application is strong enough, it shouldn't matter and all, but it's still totally nerve-wracking. I tried avoiding SDN for a day, but then I got a PM.... the next thing I knew, I was looking again and people were hearing from UCSD, too. Agh!

I find it strange that no one has posted any post-interview rejections. If they are pulling files randomly, then there must be some rejections in addition to the acceptances.

i think they give rejections last (like they did interviews). plus, they can't reject them outright yet b/c they have to retain the right for waitlist and things like that.

also i supposedly heard from people who asked UCSF adcoms and say that after all interivews, those that really bomb it or will get rejected out right will hear VERY soon like 2 weeks after. yet no one has put that up.

but we all don't know how the process works. Zwiggles might have been the best applicant so got the call first possibly. we just don't know.

They definitely didn't give interview rejections last. I was checking out SDN all through the month of December and seeing everyone get interview invites or outright rejections...I didn't even receive an invite until the 2nd week in January and when I inquired as to why that might be during my interview, I was told (again) "It's random" 🙂

I'm glad that didn't happen to you twice. I'm so glad I didn't discover SDN before I got my interview invites, because i would have been freaking out soooo much.... kind of like I am right now! Oh, the irony. 🙄

They told us that too during the prereq review. Maybe everyone on SDN is just great 😀 haha. After all, I definitely think had I not discovered this website last summer, I wouldn't be even waiting for letters in the first place!

I'm glad that didn't happen to you twice.

Me too! Even when I got an invite, I was still kinda bummed because I thought maybe someone had cancelled and I was pulled in as a second choice. But during the interview session James said they had invited 308 and 302 had accepted so I felt a lot better 🙂

there are people outside of SDN. so that's why there prollie may have been rejections already. maybe people on SDN are just good enough not to get rejected outright post interview.

and quite possibly there are more than just zwiggles and boltsfan who also got accepted. SDN is a VERY small group.

I'll let you know if anyone else joins my facebook group, that seems to reach more people.

It makes me feel so much better knowing that I'm not the only one borderline-obsessing about this. When it comes down to it, the majority of us haven't heard, so there's absolutely no reason to freak out or lose hope yet. We all just need to hang in there until we're obliviously shaking hands with one another during the orientation week! Keep positive 🙂

It is, although I found it rather amusing that after the welcome/financial aid session when people were just chatting, I overheard a guy behind me say to someone else, "Hey, have you heard of SDN?" Maybe that was one of you guys 😎 haha. I kind of snickered in my head because I didn't think of "revealing" myself to anyone randomly. Although I did meet evilolive there, not knowing who he was when I talked to him then.

i thought i did great at UCSF and my stats/paper app is great too. that's why i'm obsessing  . but it's b/c i have no class today. but luckily i have basketball and my gf to make me sane 😀

There should be a group called, "Waiting for pharmacy school acceptance/rejection/waitlist letters is making me go NUTS!"

Well... what did we start here? Thank god I am not the only overanalyzing freak who checks her mail a few times a day hoping that the mailman who I know on first name basis may have realized that he somehow dropped the acceptance letter and was planning on delivering it late... 😛

Oh Zwigglez I saw your facebook group and was so tempted to join so that the luck can rub...but of course it wouldn't have been legit

I've heard mixed things about Mission Bay and Aldea is family only - meaning you must provide proof of marriage or registered partnership and have children (according to the housing office person I spoke to today). So I think I'll be surfing craigslist for the next few months 🙂

The housing office told you this?! That's weird! I live in Mission Bay with my fiance and they didn't even care about her. The way I understand it, at least last year when I moved in, is that they only care about the primary leaseholder. With exception of 4 bedroom apts (which are rented as single rooms) I could have picked any apartment and they told me that I would be responsible for whoever lived with me. Now, granted, that might have change because MB is at like 99% capacity no....whereas it was like 70% when I moved in.

Hmm...that is weird though. I'd call back for a clarification...that is if you really want to live out here.

And for those of you with misconceptions.....no..it's not on the other end of the world!! It's a (relatively) quick 25-30 minute shuttle ride and the shuttles run every 20 minutes. When I drive to school from places that are CLOSER it takes me LONGER due to the time it takes to park. Anyhoo....just an FYI.

The housing office said the proof was required for Aldea but I'm not sure about MB. Will they let a single student rent a 2br in MB? My friend (a non-UCSF student) and I would like to live together, but I wasn't sure if they would allow me to get 2brs.

From what I've read, you should have no problems getting a 2 bedroom place. Here is what they say on their housing website:

Can I choose my own roommate?

  • If you are the leaseholder of a 1, 2, or 3 bedroom apartment, the other occupants do not need to be UCSF affiliates.

There is some other helpful information at this link as well.

Sweet, then I won't freak out about housing so much. Any advice on which type of floor plan to try for at MB?

Oh yeah...your roomate should be fine. My fiance lives with me....but for all they know it could be my drug dealer!

If you have a chance to check out the apts you should see them in person. Some of the 2 bedrooms have a HUGE beam going through the center of the living room....I'm assuming for earthquake proofing. It really is weird! Our place has a walk in closet. Other than the long bedroom, I like the plan. Some of the plans have the outer wall as nearly all window. There are others that I haven't seen....but you should really try to come up and take a look. We got this place sight-unseen and it was a bit of a SHOCK and took some getting used to for the SMALL living room. I would hate for you to have a similar shock.

While we're at it....let me address some pros and cons (from my humble POV)

Pros:
-Number ONE: It's SUNNY! During the summer, when it's cold, gloomy, and freezing in the rest of the city, MB is nearly always sunny. Great for you SoCal people.
-Clean and still pretty new
-Plenty of parking (though it costs $100 per month) Your parking pass will get you free parking after 4:45 at Parnassus though.
-No deposit or credit check
-Maintenance crew is great and very quick
-Gym is AMAZING (3 levels, 2 pools including one on the roof, tv's on all cardio machines, great classes)
-Shuttles take you to lots of major areas, including school, bus stops, downtown, safeway, several major medical centers, AND there's a "local" which acts as sort of a free taxi weekday evenings.
-Let me add that shuttles are clean, bum free, and urine free....especially when compared to public transportation
-Walking distance to Giants stadium, safeway, food, embarcadero and farmers market (though it is a bit far for walking to get to the popular piers)
-New "T Line" which you can catch right outside the building and presumably take to the N-Judah...which you will be intimately familiar with.

Cons:
-Construction, construction, CONSTRUCTION: LOTS of constructions going on everywhere....on the streets...to the north of us (New Cancer building is wiping out the bay view for the North building residents)...the the east of us (office building of some sorts) and SOMETIMES the construction people like to be funny and start at 7AM. They've been pretty good about it lately though...no construction until after 8 on weekdays.
-"Far" from school....about 1/2 hr by shuttle or driving+parking.
-Shuttles can cause sea-sickness in some people. If this is you do NOT sit in the back of the shuttle. The "Big Blue" that picks us up in the morning is a typical charter bus....much larger and more comfortable
-Not much out here yet. Some cool places (both cheap and expensive) by the ballpark....but not nearly as many cool hangouts as at Parnassus.
-As of right now all of the shops that were supposed to be opening in the building (food, banks, etc) are still closed. We've been told that we're getting a Subway and a coffee shop very soon....big whoopdeedoo!

That's all that I can think of at the moment. I'm sure there's more. I like living out here.....though there have been some times when it's been frustrating. The last shuttle from Parnassus leaves at 10 PM, so if you are hanging out late you need to drive or make sure you make other arrangements. When you are a second year you may have a problem with signing another year lease if you are going to be leaving on rotations.....but that's nothing you have to worry about right now.

Any other ?'s....LMK.

Awesome, thanks so much for the advice! I'll definitely consider MB now, although I'm still going to surf around craigslist a bit 🙂

Zwigglez or Boltsfan, how much was your deposit for UCSF? (just curious🙂 )

The deposit is $100, but they end up canceling the check and sending it back to you (it serves as a receipt). So I guess you could get your check back, accept to another school, and never lose the $100 from enrolling in UCSF.

By "canceled check will serve as your receipt" they don't mean actually canceling the check. The deposit amount will just be put through as a debit on your account (they've already taken out my $100). So yeah, they do require a $100 deposit which I assume will be credited towards your school fees eventually, just like everywhere else.

Ahh, that makes much more sense than what I was thinking. 🙂

Wow, a hundred bucks is great!🙂....I guess the better the school, the less they feel the need to anchor you to your decision by making you pay exorbitant deposits (I just read read on another thread that Touro has a $2000 deposit! 😱)

It probably has to do with the fact that UCSF is public and therefore has cheaper tuition.

I am still in utter disbelief! I was rushing home from my Physics exam so that I can drive to LAX and catch my flight Sac. for my UOP interview and checked the mail to find my UCSF acceptance!!!!! So after I cried for a good 20 minutes, I called UOP to cancel my interview!
Zwigglez, not I can really join your facebook group!!
