I was wondering if it was possible to do an AEGD style residency through the Navy/Army/Air Force once you've graduated and have been practicing for a few years even though you did not go the HPSP route? If so then how do grades and class rank play into this?

In the Army you can only do a 2 year AEGD after you are in. The 1 year is not an option if you don't do it your first year in.

The grades and class rank you will need will depend on how many other people apply when you decide to apply. Grades and class rank will still be important, but the longer you are in the military the more your military evaluations and performance come into play.

It would make sense to plan on a 2-year AEGD IMO. Why waste your time on a 1-year if you are coming in from private practice? If you decide to stay in, you'll have go back for the 2-year or other specialty. Most likely you won't be able to apply until you are in that first year anyway. If you do the 2-year, you have concurrent payback and when your time is up, you are eligible for the RB. Makes more sense to me that way.

Unless you don't want to do Comp... once you get into Comp, they're going to want to utilize you as a Comp dentist for a while before doing more training.
