I was recently rejected from UCSF after being complete there for two months. It is one of my top choices and I feel I have solid numbers and EC's.
Do you appeal?
If so, what do you write in the letter?

you write how deeply saddened you are by the rejection and how you feel that you are better than the other people they accepted they interviewed.

Dean Wofsy gave a talk at the local State University last year and said that UCSF does have an appeals process. I think appeals can be made at any stage in the process, pre-secondary to post-interview. He also mentioned that one or two of the folks who appealed that year (don't think it's a huge group to begin with) did wind up attending UCSF. The way I see it, you've got nothing to lose and the adcom knows how arbitrary the process can be. I might try calling to admissions first to ask about the formal appeals process. Good Luck!

I stand corrected. my bad. i guess that makes sense tho ... if you could appeal post-interview then they'd be getting a few hundred appeals a year.

I cant imagine why they would reject you. Looks like a total crapshoot even with the right stuff.

The thing that comes to mind (and this is how scattered my mind tends to be) is an episode of the Simpsons. Homer barely gets his tax returns in in time, and when it gets to the IRS, his accidentally gets bumped from 'quick refund' to 'severe audit'.

Maybe the same thing happened with your application? Desks can be messy and doors/windows/frantic premeds can knock things over...

I would focus on why you seem to be a good fit for that school. A lot of schools seem to be giving that more emphasis.

And I suggest that you do not claim to be better than other applicants. It just sounds bad. Tout your strenghts. But don't put others down.

I think if you have something about your background that does not shine through in your application, then you have grounds to appeal a rejection. Otherwise, would you say "Ya, you see I have a 3.9 and a 38, awesome EC's why the hell would you reject me?" cuz that would be ridiculous. They already know this........

every school has an appeal process...you start this process by filling out an AMCAS application again

maybe the attitude that you deserved to get in was the problem.

I haven't heard of any others. The info on the site is a little hidden. It was my first rejection and one of my top schools so I started wondering what actions I could now take.

Are you appealing because it's your number one, or because you feel burned? If it's the former, do it. If not, don't. You're going to get into a great school, is there some really pressing reason why you feel UCSF is the ONE for you?

I'm only saying this because I think appealing is an act of desperation (not quite the right word...perhaps "passion"?) that one must take when their heart has been crushed and all dreams lost. Am I being dramatic? It's because I might consider an appeal if I don't get an interview at UCSF when I apply next year (solid EC's, good GPA and TBA MCAT). I've worked there, I know people on the adcom, I know I would be a great fit (and them for me), and mainly, my entire system of support is in NorCal. It would be very difficult to pack up my family and move because I never got a chance to interview. I know I would immediately withdraw from all other schools and enroll the day after I received a fat envelope. 100% Guaranteed.

I know this process isn't fair, but I'm not sure the appeals process should be used for a "why not?" situation. I think that if you're going to appeal, if you get your interview and acceptance, you should be prepared to follow through and attend. Also, you'll probably need a very strong argument as to why it is personally important to you and beneficial to them to use their spread-thin resources on your application.

I agree, it's crazy you didn't get an interview for your stats alone, but I'm sure you aren't the only one.

Slightly off the subject of the appeal thing, were you the president of your school's Premed AMSA, or a regional director?

We have a saying in EMS -- you can't make a dead patient any deader. It means that when someone is in cardiac arrest, you try pretty much anything to get them back. You probably have little grounds for an appeal and it probably won't work. But what can they do, upgrade your rejection to a super-mega rejection? I'd say go for it. Be humble and let them know why you love the school. Do your research. Whatever you do, try not to sound entitled. People with better stats that yours have gotten rejected from UCSF pre-interview (just check out mdapps and some of last year's posts). Like I said, it probably won't work, but it will improve your chances over what they are currently. Good luck.

Then, they didn't give him an interview, and he appealed again. Finally, they wait listed him and he harassed them senseless. He's about halfway through his first year at UCSF now. Did he fight hard because he had awesome stats and was overlooked, or did he not have awesome stats but REALLY wanted to get in? I'm just curious if this only works if you have a 4.0/40?
