PhD/PsyD APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2019)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Mass rejection email from Mass Mental Health/BIDMC PREP track. I actually felt like I was a good fit for this one. Officially starting to be concerned.

DCT here. We know that it's agonizing waiting to hear from sites, but please remember if we wait longer to send rejections after invites, there is a reason behind it. For example, if a site has multiple tracks, and the invites go out in waves depending on track, we don't want to send multiple emails/rejections to the same applicant because this causes confusion for the applicant. Plus, as a training director, I wouldn't want to send multiple rejections to a single applicant - I know how tough this time is. Some sites may also have waitlists and don't want to send a rejection unless they are certain that the applicant will not be invited. From those that I know on training committees, there is no site that I'm aware of that just waits to send rejections for no reason. We also want this part of the process to be over as soon as possible. If the notification date that the site had listed on APPIC has passed and you haven't heard, then definitely feel free to contact the site, but please don't contact the site before then. We're already busy enough and this will likely reflect poorly on you. Good luck to all of you!
You are the real MVP! Thanks str63!

I was wondering if you had any insight on contacting programs to ask which tracks expressed interest. My very top choice requested that we indicate 3 tracks of interest in our cover letters. I'd give my right arm (or any extremity really!) for any of these rotations, but would like to be able to be as prepared as possible for the interviews. At the same time, I'd rather prepare for all 3 tracks than appear annoying or pushy. Is it best to wait it out? Or is it a fair question to ask?

Thanks so much! You're so wonderful!

Anyone else thinks/hopes that McLean might do their (what seems to be kind of) usual second wave of invites for Adult track later today? Not quite sure I get the logic though, except for they seem to only include December dates in their first wave and only January dates in their second wave. Mystery?

So, just wondering if someone can confirm that Stanford/Lucile Packard actually sent out invites. I see it on the front page, but I have gone through the form and can't find the original post. Also, I have heard from several people who applied there (n = 7 😀), that they have not heard back either

I can only add that I know one more person waiting who has heard nothing!

I've been wondering this as well - I have heard nothing along with a few colleagues (smaller n).

They do it by geographic location. Local first.

I also applied to that track and felt it was my best fit of all my sites. I really thought I'd at least make it to the interview stage.

I have 3 interviews, but this process is such a rollercoaster.

I will also add, though, that there was at least one other site that I did not see posted and thought that maybe there was another thread or outside sources from which the information was taken (I think the site was MGH Neuro). It's entirely possible that it is just inattention to detail on my part, but I didn't recall seeing it unless someone posted it later than the date on which they received notification.

Mass rejection from st Elizabeth's. I appreciate the message from DCT:

I am very aware of the high stress related to this application process, and I want to emphasize that this email is not a reflection of your qualifications. Rather, our decision to extend interview offers is based more so on overall fit with our program. I personally review every single application that we receive, and I greatly appreciate all of the effort and hard work that you dedicated to your application materials. I very much regret that I cannot reply to each you of personally, but I am very happy to share feedback with you about your application materials after the match process has been completed.

Some people are sending the info as PMs

Rejection from MMHC/HMS for Neuro. Figured that would be a solid interview but apparently not.

I just received the same rejection email. I must say it’s quite classy!!!

I didn't apply to Stanford/Lucile Packard myself, but know multiple people who did apply and got interviews there a few weeks ago. Not sure if they will send out a second wave, though!

n=9. To be fair, I think some people are choosing to PM info about invites, because I've noticed a couple of sites listed on the front page but nothing about them in the thread.

That's a great question. I did post an in-depth analysis in the thread called "Anyone Else Afraid of Not Matching" for anyone who is interested in the full story. But just for the quick version:

1. I didn't have enough intervention hours (my first external practicum was heavy in neuro assessment) so I'm quite sure that my application was thrown out by many sites up front. Although sites post a "minimum" number of required intervention hours, I think many of them use much higher cutoffs when actually reviewing applications just due to the competitiveness of all the applicants. For better or worse, in the last few years, it has become much more common to take an extra year before applying for internship so the number of training hours needed to be a viable candidate has gone up. To remedy this I spent the last year at a practicum that had a lot of intervention opportunities so it brought me up to a competitive level with training hours.

2. My materials last year (e.g. essays + cover letters) were 100% oriented towards neuropsychology. I have since been advised that this was a terrible strategy and that internship is really supposed to be centered around generalist training with some opportunities for specialty training. My materials this year, especially my essays, are way more general and holistic and while my cover letters do clearly state my career goals regarding being a neuropsychologist, I also highlight my desire for training in other aspects of the field.

I think this is the issue I am having in regards to some of the sites that I thought were good fits - in retrospect, I believe that I spoke far too much about Neuro and research without completely accepting the fact that this would be more useful for my anticipated post-doc positions and that our internships should be a well-balanced final year prior to degree. It seems obvious now, but I clearly wasn't thinking in that fashion while writing my cover letters and essays.

I can confirm that I received a PM notification of this interview that I then added to the main list. All indications are that this was a very reliable individual/notification.

I've integrated notification information into the main list from more than 50 individual PMs; you will see several sites on the list that are not in the thread itself.

Anyone knows whether asking for a different date is an option with them if these two dates absolutely do not work?

Is this the one also called University of Tennessee Health Science Center?

Has anyone heard from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (Rehabilitation Psychology/Neuropsychology Services; ID: 1474)? This is different from the Mount Sinai Beth Israel site.

Rejection from MGH CBT Track just came in. Was expecting this one...

Anyone heard from Texas State University Counseling Center?

Given that the interview dates listed on their site are pretty soon and they appear to have sent out invites earlier last year, I'm thinking they have already have. Would just like to confirm.

Still waiting on them as well, but they typically notify around the end of the first week of December so hopefully sometime this week!!!

I feel your pain! Been there, done that. Just wish I had an advisor who would have steered me the right direction the first time around so I didn't have to learn that lesson the hard way, but hopefully you will still have a good outcome regardless. As long as you can get your foot in the door at just a few sites then you still stand a great chance!
