Finally got rejected from Louis Stokes!!! Never thought I would be so happy just to know!

It's kind of funny because I was among the group of people who were rejected the first time around, so I had the good fortune of being rejected for the 2nd time today  And to make it even better, I was rejected from them last year too. 3 total rejections for 2 applications is pretty talented of me 😛

Got invites from Mendota, UMass (forensic track), and Springfield Hospital Center. I will add all the info when i get to my computer

In our interview prep meeting, one of the professors who was on the training committee at Childrens Hospital in LA said while a nose ring did not bother her, one of her colleagues could not get over it and was very annoyed that it was worn during an interview. You never know who may be a bit more conservative when it comes to interviews. Id suggest keeping it out for all your interviews and discussing wearing it with your future supervisor at where ever you match once you start.

I have a nose ring in. Do you think it's necessary to remove for the interviews? None of my current supervisors have any issues with it and in some ways I think it's helped me relate to others in my clinical work. I know there's usually an understood no tattoo/piercing rule for interviews. Any insight?

I have a question that I’ve been pondering for a bit and would like to crowd source the answer here. Would you, as an applicant, prefer not to hear about a rejection from my site until all interview spots are filled, or would you rather receive a rejection at the same time as invites and then if a spot opens up be reached out to with a retraction of the initial rejection and invitation to our site at that time?

Not the retraction one. The wait is difficult but that's a given. I'd rather have one answer, either way.

Hearing nothing is deafening so I would honestly prefer a rejection and be pleasantly surprised if it were rescinded later.

I agree on a definitive answer. That being said, if i'm on your no list immediately and the chance of being offered an interview is zero, then i'd rather hear as early as possible.

I'd definitely want to hear back the same time as invites go out. That way I can move forward with planning and buying flights and such, which can get more expensive the longer we wait

I would unequivocally prefer to receive the rejection when invites are sent out. Thanks for reaching out to ask!

I was planning on trying to get to interviews early as well and I didn't know Uber had that option! It's in the app I'm guessing?
It does have that function! I would just warn that in some really small/rural places, that it might not be reliable. I was trying to get a flight out of a small midwestern town, and I had both a Lyft and Uber pre-scheduled from the night before that both did not come (well technically one would have come but would have arrived 40 mins after my scheduled pickup). However, I’ve also scheduled it to pick me up in bigger cities and they’ve arrived with no issue. Just something to think about if it’s a smaller town.

Accept or reject me ASAP. I like to cut my losses and move, plus it becomes difficult to make travel plans. If a site does reject me and an interview slot becomes available I will consider attending if it fits with my interview schedule if not I don’t need sloppy seconds!

What about backpacks? I would like to carry a tote but also with all the traveling I’ll be carrying my backpack as well, but I’m guessing it that it might look unprofessional?

I carried my backpack to my first interview today. I went through this cycle last year and did not (I brought a purse with me instead). I think I’m going to keep my backpack for the rest of the interviews. People are also bringing their luggage, and sometimes people use their backpack as their carry on. There is usually a space for interviewees to put down our stuff, so it’s not like we’re going from one interview room to the next wearing a backpack. Just my two cents.

This is the first site that has offered a phone interview, and they make it sound like it won't affect your chances. I may need to do this option because I have interviews scheduled on all of those dates. However, will this affect my chances in any way? Although this is my ninth interview, I am still very interested in this site and don't want to get ahead of myself thinking I will match just because I have various interviews...

Rejection at the same time as invite so I don't unnecessarily hold dates open waiting to hear back.

As difficult as it is to wait, I would rather receive a definitive decision later than an uncertain decision earlier. One of the main reasons being that it's tricky to organize a plan that works for all the offered interview dates, so if you receive a rejection from a site you might cross it off your list and end up scheduling another site on a date that you had originally reserved for the original site. If the original site then reaches out again and says that they actually have an interview open, it might put you in a bind. Conversely, if you wait to send out rejections, it is more likely that an applicant will be reserving that date in the hopes of still receiving an invite from you.

Rejection at the same time. The longer we wait, the more expensive and hectic things are.

ETA: While it may make it easier to wait on rejections for those one or two people who end up getting offers after the rejection, it seems to benefit the larger group to send rejections ASAP

Got a mass email rejection from the Palo Alto VA for the neuro track.

This might sound weird, but I am starting to come to terms with the fact that I'm not really a "top" applicant, and I'm actually okay with that! Not to get into personal details, but I had to deal with some devastating family issues during grad school that greatly affected my ability to take advantage of every training/research opportunity etc. So it kind of seems silly to compare myself to people who had extremely different grad school experiences as me. Acknowledging this fact has greatly reduced this pressure I was putting on myself to get like 800 interviews and compete with every other applicant I know. The reason I'm saying this is because I know a lot of people on here have been having some insecurities about this process and how many interviews you are getting, but at the end of the day your path may have been vastly different than other people with whom you are trying to do a 1:1 comparison. And for the love of all things holy, if you happened to go through a tough personal experience ON TOP of the already demanding grad school requirements then please give yourself some self-compassion! <3

I agree and to add to that, it doesnt mean you aren’t a top applicant, I guess depending on your definition. Im a student of color and was also diagnosed with a CNS chronic illness during my third year of my program so we cant compare ourselves to everyone else as we aren’t working with the same life circumstances. Thanks for posting this reminder!

How about a notice that we are on a waiting list? The waiting list would only be for the top rejected applicants. I would appreciate that. However, if I was not truly going to be on a waiting list, I would prefer to be rejected immediately.

I 100% agree with the response above, or the suggestion to notify me of a waiting list. I'd rather know right away that I am rejected so that I don't hold a spot open for other sites.

Strongly agree about a wait list. If there's no way I am going to be invited please reject me ASAP. But if there's a change I'd want to know I'm on a wait list. I made a calendar with all the possible interview dates for my sites. Knowing I'm rejected lets me remove that site from my calendar to make scheduling easier for other sites. Not knowing I'm rejected puts me in a place of trying to reserve days for sites I have not heard from yet when maybe I don't need to. I wouldn't want to get rejected and have that then change since in the intervening time I might have given up the last available interview day for that site to another site.

Same! for BMed and Gero tracks.

Personal (did not know this was a thing - in a word document) rejection from Lurie Children’s hospital today.

I would much rather be busier than ever, reviewing these applications - like H&R Block during tax season - than sitting in a bubble of uncertainty for such a protracted period of time. Just saying.

Anyone’s guess when we will hear from Carle?
