PhD/PsyD APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2019)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
At what point do you start requesting phone interviews? I have 10 interviews and since my chances of matching are 99% I am thinking of requesting phone for my safety sites. This is getting expensive and I have a baby at home I will be missing terribly. How would you word such email to not kill your chances completely?

If you're comfortable with your current list then I would think about kindly declining the offer. I think there are plenty of people who would value that interview spot and it would be one less thing to worry about in this mess. Obviously it is a personal choice, but if I was somewhat throwing in the towel on those sites then I'd allow the site a chance with someone more invested.

Thank you for saying this! I have to say, I have been slightly disheartened to see sites I was genuinely interested in as “safety sites” for some people who have been pondering canceling an established interview if something better comes along. I know this doesn’t mean I would have gotten an interview...but someone would have. Every yes is someone else’s no

Anyone hear news on Central Regional’s adult track? I haven’t seen anything yet, but invites for all other tracks have gone out.

No news on my end. I'm still waiting on that one, UMass/Worcester, Trinitas, and Tewksbury (SMI track), but I'm thinking they may be rejections. I believe Central Regional Hospital's notification date is Saturday so hopefully we'll hear something by then.

Does anyone know if it's better to carry a purse, tote, or nothing? My suit doesn't have pockets so I feel like I need to carry at least my phone with me. Also, is anyone planning on wearing an Apple watch? I may not because it could go off somehow, but my regular watch is pink... I hope I'm overthinking this.

Seeing a lot of anxiety and self-doubt here in the last couple days alone. I just wanted to remind everyone (even though I'm sure it's been said before) that your worth as a person, your worth as a therapist, and your worth as a student are not defined by internship interviews or match. It's just one small piece of the journey in the grand scheme of things. So many supervisors have reminded me that internship is just one year out of our entire career, and that the benefit of being in such a broad field like psychology is that there are plenty of different paths that can lead a us to a goal. We're all nervous and that's totally okay. Don't be afraid to reach out a little more to your loved ones and support systems to ask for help or reassurance, even if you think they won't understand. We've made it this far, we're awesome and competent, and we deserve to remind ourselves of that. So here's your reminder!

I'm carrying a plain black laptop bag that has a notebook, copy of CV, pens, and snacks. I think a bag is fine as long as it isn't like a sparkly tote bag you got on someone's bachelorette party that has a picture of a wine glass on it. I think the watch will be fine as long as you have notifications silenced and don't seem like you're constantly checking the time during interviews.

I like the laptop bag idea! And relieved to know even a pink watch is acceptable. I don't want to stand out as the Elle Woods of psychology (although I lowkey am:laugh:)

I'm trying to avoid using rental cars because 1) I'm under 25 and don't feel like paying the extra fee and 2) I honestly find it stressful to return and last time almost got lost at the airport trying to find it lol. Thus, I'm wondering if anyone is planning on using an Uber to get to interviews in the morning? My fear is there will be none available in the area, they will be an hour away, they won't show up, etc. I've also had taxis fail to show up before due to getting lost and unknown reasons. What do you guys think is the most reliable option?

What about backpacks? I would like to carry a tote but also with all the traveling I’ll be carrying my backpack as well, but I’m guessing it that it might look unprofessional?

Apple watches can easily be put in do not disturb to avoid that. It should connect with your phone, so if you put your phone on DND you watch won’t buzz at all. That’s how I keep from being distracted in sessions!

Method of Invitation (Phone call, personal/mass email, snapchat): email
Specialty Track or Site (e.g., for consortiums): N/A
Offered Interview Dates: 1/4, 1/7, 1/11, 1/8, Skype TBD

Edit: 1/4, 1/7, 1/11, 1/18, Skype TBD

As a quick addendum, Pine Rest has two tracks (a) Outpatient/Underserved/Acute Hospital Track and (b) Outpatient/Underserved/Residential Track. However, I do not believe that they send out invitations that are track specific.

Explanation from the site: "We allow interns to rank two rotation tracks. We intend to submit the same rank order of candidates for both tracks. We encourage interns to consider both tracks, as 24 hours/week are shared by both tracks (outpatient, underserved, didactic). Furthermore, we encourage cross-training across both tracks."

Hope that helps!

I was going to go with Uber, but I didn't even think of this! I would either call a cab company the night before and schedule a ride or use the schedule ride option with Uber. I am also going to give myself about 30-40 extra minutes on top of how ever long it might take for me to get to the site just to be safe. I'd rather be super early than late at all.

I was planning on trying to get to interviews early as well and I didn't know Uber had that option! It's in the app I'm guessing?

I have a nose ring in. Do you think it's necessary to remove for the interviews? None of my current supervisors have any issues with it and in some ways I think it's helped me relate to others in my clinical work. I know there's usually an understood no tattoo/piercing rule for interviews. Any insight?

Also, with Uber/taxis I'm wondering if they will just drop us off at the entrance of the site or if they would actually drive us to the building we need to get to... I also worry about getting through security with a driver, especially at a prison..

I would say better to be safe than sorry. I always hide my tattoo until I start working at a place, and then if they ask me to cover it I do of course. Although it has also helped me to connect with clients.

I think as long as it isn't gaudy and you don't wear it on your back you should be fine. I didn't want to risk my luggage being too big and being checked (our DCT told us every year someone loses their luggage) so I'm bringing my multi-colored Vera Bradley luggage bag as my carry-on and sites will see it when I ask them to put it somewhere.. I just can't keep worrying about it anymore and can't spend $50 to go get a black luggage bag... Hopefully sites aren't that critical!

Got this one too!! 🙂

On my way to my first interview, even though I’m still waiting on three more sites haha the fun never ends!

I’ve heard from a cohort mate that pine rest and mendota notified for inpatient - looks as though others have too judging from posts! Congrats y’all! Wishing everyone luck today that they hear from sites 🙂

I say be yourself (within reason), and know your environment. If it's a setting which typically would restrict piercings, be aware of that. Ive had many friends interview with a small nose piercing and matched at very competitive sites

If you plan on wearing it during your internship then I would wear it to the interview as well. Let's say you go to an interview (and don't wear it) and this happens to be the type of site that would make a negative judgment about you based on this feature. I think it might put you in an awkward position when you show up the first day of internship with it in. If you wear it to the interview and you match then first of all you know they are cool with it, and second of all the site will likely be a better fit for you than sites that might be less open to it. I think many sites won't care at all though, but it would be unfortunate to end up at a site that conflicts with your natural proclivities.

That's good to hear. Did they have any pushback or feel as though it worked against them at all?

I think you can check ahead to see if uber, Lyft, or taxis serve the area you'll be in. Some airports prohibit uber/lyft, some areas are too rural for uber or Lyft. Just something to keep in mind 🙂 I believe there's an expense sharing page too where you can try to coordinate with someone else who might be driving and try to split the cost

I could see an argument for and against taking it out for interviews. One of my practicum supervisors asked me if I'd be willing to take my nose ring out for internship, and if I'd be happy at a site that would care about whether I have a nose ring or not. I left mine in for all of my interviews (and I matched at a children's hospital for neuro, for what it's worth).

Nope! No pushback. She actually had 17 interviews! And got her top site. I've done all of my practicum rotations and interviews with mine in, and always leave it in for professional conferences.

I wondered the same...I have many tattoos, but only 2 that are visible in long sleeved, professional clothing... one behind one ear, and one actually on the other ear. Both are small, but with hair down, not terribly noticeable. I was told by my training director to leave them uncovered, but I feel a little uncertain about it still.

I guess the question is, do you want to cover up your tattoos every day if you end up matching there? If you're fine with that, I'd say cover them on interviews if it will make you more comfortable/confident. But if not, perhaps you should just let them show!

Finally got rejected from Detroit VA! Now I just need the other four to let me know SOMETHING!

(In honor of last year) If & How you're staying sane: Marvelous Maisel Season 2 is out this week. So very soon, that will be my coping strategy.

In regards to interview dates, she offered a lot of dates (maybe 5-6) between the 7th and the 18th... and I was totally caught off-guard with nothing to write them down with, so I picked one I knew I could do. Sorry I can't remember anything beyond that.

FYI, Centerstone (a site in the National Psych Training Consortium - Great Lakes Region) sent out interview invites via personal email 12/3. I didn't see that one listed yet.

Has anyone received an invite from John Hopkins All Children's in FL? I know they gave some rejections, but I'm wondering if they have sent invites yet..
