Same here, but I already have an interview scheduled on that date. I emailed them back asking for alternative dates. Fingers crossed! Wondering if anyone else had to reschedule with MSH?
 
I am so excited about and definitely expected a rejection given that it is somewhat late in the process.

Specialty Track/Site: Pediatric Psychology at Motts Children’s at Michigan Medicine Department of Pediatrics in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Interviews date: only one they offer will be held on Friday, January 18, 2019 from 9:00am to 12:00pm in East Lansing at Michigan State.

For the Peds track they also offer an open door afternoon from 2PM to 4 PM on the 1/17/18.

So, taken together, the sort of the odd thing is that the entire visit spans across two half days and two different sites/cities that are appropriately a car-hour apart. I wonder how previous applicants managed to travel from one city to the next if they are not from around the area and travel with car.

Anyhow, since I decided to travel with my car anyways, I am glad to offer anyone who wants a ride from Ann Arbor to E. Lansing on Thursday evening. Just PM me.

I just received a personal email rejection from a site that previously called me to offer an interview. I am really confused by this :shrug: I am wondering if this has happened to anyone else? Can something like this happen in error or can sites really take back their interview offers? I already have a flight booked too 🙁

That seems quite odd. Did the rejection email seem like it was sent to a mass of applicants and did not mention any error on their part? If so, that email was likely a mistake on their part. I would still verify with them, but I have a hard time believing that this error would occur - from interview to rejection. The other direction makes more sense.

Man, I’d be tempted to ignore the rejection and show up. That makes no sense. It was probably in error.

Definitely contact the program to clarify! It’s entirely possible that they sent the rejection by accident.

So sorry that happened. I would clarify with the program. If they did indeed retract the offer I would notify your training department.

That’s definitely unprofessional if it wasn’t by accident. I hope it was a mistake! If I was in your situation and they actually did change my invitation to a rejection, I would expect them to reimburse me for the flight ‍♀️

This happened to a friend in my cohort. He got an interview offer via email and a personal email a few days later saying that they offered the interview by accident. It sounds like this rejection email may have been a mistake, but I would definitely call them and if it was not a mistake, tell them you already booked a flight. They need to let you interview.

I think it’s a 2 way street with ranking. I’ll be considering if I liked the interviewers, the site itself and whether or not they showed strong interest/enthusiasm for me!

For some reason, my interview today made me feel unhinged. Everyone seemed very qualified and I'm realizing my other interviews are going to be full of similarly qualified people. If my current site didn't even want me, I don't see how I have any shot at these other sites.........i'm starting to consider my plans if I don't match 🙁

I'm trying to remind myself that a lot of sites will be pulling from the same pools of people. So even though everyone is very qualified they can each only hav one site they match with.

The same thing happened one of my program mates last week. Fortunately, the site was only was in state and a hour Folsom her residence BUT still! I think it’d be better to NOT tell you and just not rank you since I doubt they’ll reimburse your air fare! I’m SO sorry this happened to you! It’s a nightmare!!!

Current intern here. This happened to me last year. I contacted the site and turned out the rejection was a mistake. Hang in there. This process is rough enough without the roller coaster of thinking you lost an interview you had counted on having.

Exactly! And in a weird way, I would prefer if the other interviewees at my sites have MORE interviews because that will increase the chances that they will match somewhere else haha. I wish you all the best, but also I'm trying to maximize my odds 😀

What are people doing to deal with rejections? I can imagine many of us haven't had to face rejection prior to this nightmarish process and it is a lot of negativity coming in a concentrated amount of time. Any suggestions would help.

Just trying to be objective about it. When I get a rejection I really do compare myself to an Olympic runner who finished in the bottom half of racers by a hundredth of a second. It’s silly but it helps me. Because I’m basically constantly reminding myself that this process involves making (sometimes very arbitrary) distinctions amongst a pool of the most qualified psychology student badasses in the country. Hell, maybe even the world. But when faced with a pool of incredibly talented and qualified applicants, sites have to make very difficult decisions somehow. For example, I got rejected from a site who told me it was because I haven’t done projective tests. Some directors may have given me the chance to come to their site and learn projective testing, but it was important to this one that I already knew it. This doesn’t make me “worse” than anyone else or diminish how hard I’ve worked. It’s just a difference between me and another applicant that means something to a particular training director in a particular place. I don’t mean to diminish our experiences with the process. Because thinking about this objectively doesn’t mean that the way decisions are made isn’t sometimes disappointing, and it definitely stings to be told we are not going to get a chance to do an internship that we’ve daydreamed about and worked really hard to achieve. But it doesn’t say anything about our value or worth as a human or a psychologist. This process is painful. But it will make us all stronger. And we’ll all end up right where we’re supposed to be.

Beautiful way of putting it! For me, I remember that it could literally come down to ...a difference of 30 hours. Maybe one person came from a program which gave them 30 hours of clinical work in their first semester, and those 30 hours pushed them over the top. Or perhaps another person just went to a site for training that a particular TD really respects....or possibly their application was read when the reviewer had just had a great day.....the fact is, if you have gotten to this point you are READY and qualified! And you will become a psychologist!

North Carolina department of public safety only does Skype interviews and say its because they recognize how expensive it is. I think it’s great, personally

Need some advice. A site offered me one interview date but it is the same date as an already scheduled interview in a different state- is it frowned upon to mention that I cannot come on that date due to another interview and request a phone/Skype interview?

The same thing happened to me and I just said that I had "another commitment" and would appreciate the opportunity for another date to interview. Even if you were to state explicitly that you have another interview scheduled, I feel like the site should be understanding about it. Just like we know and understand they are interviewing a bunch of other people, they should understand that we may be interviewing at a bunch of places as well.

Interview prep. Getting excited about the potential sites. Finishing up dissertation. Daydreaming about moving and looking at apartments in different cities. 🙂

I had the same thing happen to me! It was really confusing and definitely a blow to my confidence. They called me and said they had called the wrong candidate. I figure if they are that unorganized...especially when they must know how stressful this is for us..we probably dodged a bullet.
