PhD/PsyD APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2019)

Fabulous news! Wondering if anyone has heard a peep from the Behavioral Medicine Service housed within Yale-New Haven Hospital (YNHH)?

And, any word from Brown or Albert Einstein SoM/Montefiore Medical Center? Looking for a friend 🙂

I have not! I am also waiting to hear from Yale BMed and Albert Einstein/Montefiore!

Any rejections or recent (since the first wave) offers from Lucile Packard yet? I still can't tell if they are doing phased invites or maybe just holding off on rejections for later (FUN!)

No word from them yet. I'm hoping for another wave as well.

I haven't heard from Brown or Montefiore yet. Last year, this was the commentary about Brown, following Thanksgiving:

A: "Brown. It is Sunday evening coming off a long weekend. Is nothing sacred?"

B: "They've done this for at least the last 2 years and I've been on edge all day waiting to see if I heard from them...I'm with XXXX and preparing for a rejection 🙁"

I have not heard anything, nor have a lot of people I know who applied. Fingers crossed it waves of invites

I know this is after the fact, but would anyone be willing to share a cover letter with me at a site where they received an invitation to interview? I think my cover letters were not very strong, and for future reference I am trying to see how to improve. I have the sample in the APAGS book, but I had a hard time coming up with letters that weren’t boring or sounding like I am talking too much about myself. Can you send me a PM? I think it is set so you can message me. If not, comment for me to message you, and I’ll see if I can get that to work.

1) How I cope. 2) How I feel after a stressful week of email checking! 3) My dog is the best and will make you all smile!

Anyone get a rejection from St. Elizabeth’s in DC? Their notification date was 11/19. I know some people received invites all ready.

No but their handbook says invites will be extended by 11/19 but rejections will be sent by 12/1 I believe.

Has anyone heard from Geisinger, DC VA, or the VA Health Psych Track at the VA Maryland HCS? I know the latter had sent out invites for other tracks but I did not see anyone mention the VA Health Psych Track.

I am waiting on Geisinger as well. I saw them post a job in Div 38 for their adult side. Maybe they are down some staff.

Has anyone heard from Jackson Health System or Henry Ford ( both neuro tracks) ?

Thanks. It says it won’t let me start a conversation with you, but I see the message button. I am not sure why. I think if you click mine to send a message, maybe that’ll work.

I received an invite from the VA Health Psych track at the VA Maryland HCS on 11/21.

Thanks, very helpful. Now, are blouses okay? Or button up? If blouses, does the color matter? I have some bright blue and hot pink ones.

Blouses are fine. Err on the side of conservative in your color choice. Like mentioned earlier in this thread, for better or worse you don’t want your clothing choice to be what makes you stand out.

I am planning to try to err on the side of neutral and conservative. Also, the best style of top may depend on your interview setting and body type. For example, I’m interviewing at prisons and know a button up - no matter how well-fitting - is a bit too much of a gamble for me. I would rather be safe than sorry.

Why not a button up for prison sites? I’m interviewing at prison sites too and never thought much about button ups being risky, but I’m also not very busty.. is that what you mean?

It won't let me PM you for some reason, but could you send me one too? Although my apps are already submitted and I have received a few interviews, I'm curious as to how different it is from mine and areas I could improve upon, as I only saw the samples in the APAGS workbook as well. Thank you!

The DCT of my program told us that one of the most common questions is the ethical dilemma with a supervisor, and that if we don't have one we will be pressed on giving one with a supervisor, professor, peer, etc. and that some sites will want a dilemma for all of these. I honestly have not have an ethical dilemma with anyone, thus, I was wondering if someone could help me come up with how to answer these?

I'm gonna copy this Q to the Interview Prep thread if that's okay with you, psydstudent!!

I think a critical thing to use in response to this type of question is knowing the steps the ethics code states a clinician should take if there is an ethical dilemma in general (i.e. speak to the person first, then climb the ladder before reporting it). Also, knowing what type of ethical dilemma requires more immediate action (professor making inappropriate comments/behaviors toward a student(s) vs supervisor not reporting abuse, etc).

When we ask this question we aren’t looking for an Ethical Dilemma so much as a time when you disagreed or had a mishap of some sort with a supervisor and how you navigated that. Did you talk to them? Did you just go with it? Would you do something different now? I can’t honestly believe that anyone gets to this point in the process without having their own point of view that differed from their supervisors POV at some point in time.

Lmao. So, prison buddies, what's the consensus? I'm thinking of wearing a black blouse; it has no sleeves but under a blazer no one would see. There's a gold bar at the top, but it's small and (hopefully) still neutral-looking. I'm probably overthinking this..

The only thing I can think of for that is that some sites will be in very cold areas so layers are probably good. And at the same time, if it gets too hot you may want to be able to take the jacket off. But if you don’t fluctuate in temperature too much then the blouse itself sounds nice!

Is it just me, or has this been the least relaxing four day holiday ever? I’m actually relieved that tomorrow is Monday so we can get back into the swing of things. Patience is a painful virtue

For me, today has been real rough especially knowing that Brown has announced on this Sunday for the last several years. I am starting to think having an idea when invites traditionally come in is not the best.

Oh, thanks for this practice question.plenty of these happen.. disagreeing on diagnosis, hospitalization, making a cps report etc. best to make the story positive and you learned from it type of thing clearly showing the ethical part of it and how you handled yourself professionally.

Ha I'm in agreement. It was around 7:30PM CST, right? I honestly wish I had never looked.

I saw both 6:30 CST and 7:30EST I think! I really wish I hadn't done that! Although if I hadn't, I probably would be sitting here assuming I had been rejected so heres to that!

Ha we will only know in retrospect what we should and should not have done for our own well-being. Even not receiving a notification comes with too many questions - I'm still not buying into this 'maybe' list simply because I don't understand its utility. However, due to so many sites sending multiple waves of invites, it's only a solved case when one receives an email.

Same! Wow, this Sunday night notification thing really is their tradition apparently?

Congrats! I really hope the Neuro one comes separately - or that someone who applied for the Neuro track posts on here. I know those interview dates are different. Fingers crossed.

Did your invite actually include the 22nd? Mine did not, but I know it was on their APPIC profile
