PhD/PsyD APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2019)

For those food show people, check out Netflix's The Final Table. The first episode or two has too many competitors to get a good feel for the dishes, but as it goes, it does a pretty good job of emphasizing the chef's stories and the relationship between teammates. They're all also stellar chefs and their artistry in presentation is pretty mindblowing.

Also, I mirror the feelings of wishing today held more answers. The rollercoaster isn't quite done yet.

This is on my Netflix list! I've heard so many good things about this show but I've been saving it for desperate times...like now.

e amount of love I feel for Shameless is endless 😍 I've watched them all and love all the characters but Frank and Lip are my favorites. So so good.

I love Lip!!!!!! He is my favorite. But I also love Ian. Many of my abnormal psych students wrote their midterm writing assignment on him because I was making them write on a character with bipolar disorder. But Frank makes me laugh (and scowl) the most!

I binged the final table ITS SO GOOD!!!! Any food nerds will totally fangirl! I’m on to rewatching old Hell’s Kitchen and chopped.

So I'm thinking ahead here, but is anyone facing the unfortunate event of flying across the country to a far away state TWICE? I tried my best to schedule interviews around expected dates but it's very possible i'll have 2 separate interviews 2 weeks apart, in the farthest state from where I live....

Not sure yet. I only have 1 interview so far but am waiting on 10 or 11 responses. So....maybe....

Sooo...due to my anxiety and thinking that it wasn't good enough, I ended up editing my autobiographical essay pretty significantly between my November 1st applications and my November 15th applications.......I just received an interview for a site where I submitted my original essay (without the edits), but have not heard back from any other sites. I still have four more applications to submit and now I am questioning which essay to send. Do you think it is best to submit my original essay (the one that earned me an interview) or the edited one? I think the edited one is more personal, whereas the original one is more clinical. Any thoughts?

Depends on the site. I wrote my cover letter to address rotations that matched with my professional and clinical experience while ensuring it also related to my essays as well. Hopefully that makes sense...?

I can only speculate here, but I would make a decision based on the version you believe sounds best and does the best job 'selling the fit.' Each reader is going to have his or her preference and it is impossible to know what that may be. While you did receive an invitation utilizing the previous version, it is entirely possible that you would have received that invitation with the new version. You can presume that the first version did not rub that site the wrong way (e.g., nothing overtly problematic), but assumptions wouldn't be able to venture much further than that.

I personally think it is unlikely that your personal essay changes made the difference. Even if it did, it is impossible to know that other sites would similarly prefer the essay. I would go with the essay that you are most confident in and that best represents that environment that you will fit. We drive ourselves crazy trying to do the impossible (predict the perfect answer) but at a certain point you have to let yourself come through. I always look at it as how I would want to fail - I'd rather fail being true to myself than fail trying to fit what a site would want.

I say this knowing that it is much easier to say than to actually embody.

Same. During that time I’ve had my first match dream. I dreamt that I wasn’t even done with my interviews, but had to submit “preliminary” rankings, and somehow ended up matching to a site I had already interviewed—not an actual site on my list might I add (and was super excited about the fact that I’d matched) BUT still had to complete my other interviews for some reason. And then I just kept thinking, oh gosh but what if I like those sites more, but can’t ever match there bc I already matched. 😵 And should I even bother preparing for those interviews. And could I maybe just skip that or would that be considered unprofessional?? Lol clearly I’m not overthinking this entire process....clearly...

Oh boy. I had a match dream too! I dreamed that I matched to a site I didn't apply to that I was totally unsuited for (adult prison site.....I'm in school psych). The site was also in Hawaii and I had to move there IMMEDIATELY, the day I received the match result.

Hahaha love it, yep the general vibe sounds about right I’m sure there will be more to come.

Just got home from seeing my toughest client and am binging Final Table based on your recommendation and drinking a glass of wine.Taking the night off instead of working on my presentation for Wednesday. There should be some kind of word that combines internship anxiety and procrastination.

This looks really cozy and you are nailing that self-care thing that they might ask you on interviews about 😉 It's all about how you frame things!

Looks like a wonderful evening. I'm tempted to turn off email notifications on my phone, including that ominous red bubble, in order to see if I can manage going the entire day without checking. If there is any news at all, I'd rather view it all at once when the day is over than in spurts during a clinic day.

Hi guys!
Just saw a few posts from folks feeling like failures because of their rejection emails, and wanted to send you a message from future you. 5 years ago this week, I received yet another rejection among a rather long list — was feeling like I wouldn’t get any invites and was almost certain I wouldn’t match (not to mention all the questions this inspired re: how am I ever going to get a job if I can’t even get an internship interview?!?) This particular rejection stung, as it was my first choice site, not only because of its strong reputation, but also because it was close to home.... and I hadn’t been home in 6 years .... and with a 4 year old niece and a new niece on the way, I was dying to just get home. Fast forward, and I ended up with 9 invites and matched at my first ranked site. Two months later, I met a hot engineer, who ended up moving across the country with me so I could return home for fellowship. A year later, I landed my dream job at the site that rejected me! Here I am 2 years later... married to that hot internship engineer, reading your applications, and prepping for another interview season. With this post, I hope to highlight a few things.. this process is a crapshoot. You may be number 12 on a invite list that can only be 11 people long. Every application before you is fantastic, and yours is too—- it’s possible that someone just happened to mention something that a given reader found interesting —- it doesn’t mean you aren’t good. It doesn’t mean you aren’t valuable... and I am living proof that sometimes you end up just where you’re supposed to be, and that if you push hard enough (and have a little luck) you can land wherever you want to... eventually.

Hugs from a selection committee member/interviewer. This procsss sucks, but you’ll be on the other side soon enough! Hang in there...

Does anyone know if phone interviews still have pretty good odds? I have to do one and it’s not my top choice but I hope it doesn’t hurt me in the end.
It will depend on the site. Some don't weigh it at all, some make an explicit choice about what it means ("If you want to come to our site, you'll make our single interview date work" is a quote I've heard from TDs), and then there is the implicit bias that may develop (for better and worse) as a result of in person interviews and the time. In the end, make the choice that's right for your training and your personal needs, and consult with your TD for any questions. They'll know your training, goals, and program history well enough to give you good advice.

When we ask this question we aren’t looking for an Ethical Dilemma so much as a time when you disagreed or had a mishap of some sort with a supervisor and how you navigated that. Did you talk to them? Did you just go with it? Would you do something different now? I can’t honestly believe that anyone gets to this point in the process without having their own point of view that differed from their supervisors POV at some point in time.
This is such good advice that I'm just going to quote and repost it. If someone hasn't disagreed with a supervisor or taken a risk in therapy that went wrong, they are not at a developmental stage fitting for internship.
