PhD/PsyD APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2019)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This calling system makes me a bit nervous as I have interviews on the 9th and 10th already, and so I can only do the 22nd.

Also, I would hate to be the assistant who has to answer all of these.

Welp, I guess there was good reason for my nervousness. Despite calling exactly at the moment it turned to 1p, they just called to schedule and the 22nd is full. I assume I'm not the only one as their notification was late and 9th and 10th are popular interview dates. So I guess I can only hope that they add another overflow day.

Yes, I received a rejection from them a couple weeks ago... If you haven't heard from them, I assume you are in their "wait list"? At this point it would definitely be ok to check in with them though. Maybe they had misspelled your email when sending out invitations or rejections.
Thank you! I will email them. Im just not sure what to say?? And in a professional, eager but not eager way??

Oh noooooo. I’m booked the 16th too. I don’t know why they didn’t offer a range of dates like the other sites. Hope it works out and they are more accommodating!

Update: they offered the 15th and 16th to me. That would be really difficult with my current schedule, plus they don’t seem to be that accommodating to interns so it’s looking like its not going to work out

Has anyone received a rejection (or email stating no longer being under consideration) from Charleston Area Medical Center/WVU SOM?

Interview invitation from Napa State Hospital. And with that, I’ve finally heard back from all my sites. Thank you guys for being there with me through this grueling process. We’re all going to kick ass in interviews, no matter how many we have, and end up where we’re supposed to end up! Sending positive vibes to everyone! Officially going to remove this website from my saved tabs now

Has anyone heard one way or the other about the W. G. (Bill) Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury, NC? Their interview notification date was on 12/15, but I haven't seen any mention in the forum about them.
I got a rejection on 12/7

I'm so sorry to hear that - they seem incredibly disorganized there. This process combined with the late notification reflects very poorly on their site in my opinion. The coordinator called me back yesterday "in error" and then still wouldn't schedule me until this morning....

I would hold out some hope for another overflow day. I think they're going to run into difficulty accommodating their applicants and filling the slots on the 9th or 10th. Another idea could be to call back and see if you can interview on the same day as the Pediatric track applicants

Good luck!
Thanks. I asked if there was flexibility in scheduling and they said they were keeping a list of those who can't make it. The list will go to the head of the NP training, so I assume they're going to try to circle back and attempt to accommodate us. I should've asked more at the time but I figure it's best to give them time to sort things out. If they don't get back to me in the next day or two then I'll inquire more. It makes it harder to just leave it with uncertainty, but I generally tend towards not listening to my anxiety as it relates to internship stuff. Itll work out and just need to give it time.

Same with me. They called back this morning but I was with a patient so I couldn’t answer. Now I’m rushing to three interviews all within 4 days. ‍♀️

Nope, I'm still waiting for this one too.

I wonder if they even send those out because of the unusual interview/visit situation. It sounds like it's possible to match even without an on-campus visit, since those are optional and granted only to those who request them in advance.

Yes, it states that they only notify if no longer under consideration. And clearly they’d notify if they accept a site request. But if we don’t hear anything by 01/03, I guess it is to be assumed that we can rank them if we choose to do so? Can’t really ask a ranking question, so it’ll more so be a question confirming that we are still under consideration.

“Applicants will only be informed if their application is no longer being considered.”

When a site says the interview will consist of writing a “case conceptualization grounded in theory” does that mean they will be providing a vignette and a theory for us to write about? Or does it mean we need to be prepared to use one theory we selected on our own for a vignette they give us? Trying my best to prepare since they told us in advanced!

My assumption is that it can be a theory of your choosing but they will provide the vignette. You should probably choose based on what the site does.

What does it mean that site visits are invitation only BUT if you’re not invited you’re still under consideration. I received an email saying this. It sounds contradictory!

It’s unusual. The missing premise, though, appears to be that there are very few spots available to visit and they still consider others based on application materials alone - unless you receive an email stating that you are no longer under consideration (a rejection, basically). Whether or not they rank you, or where they rank you in comparison to those who do visit, I don’t know. So it’s not contradictory, necessarily, it’s just unusual and opens up the floor for a lot of questions.

Yeah way too many loose ends. I’m not going to bother to rank the site. If I’m not worth meeting in person I don’t believe they’ll truly take my application seriously! No point to waste time or effort in such a situation.

We don't do this at my site, but I understand why some sites do it - they just don't have the capacity to interview as many candidates as they'd like. You probably won't be ranked as highly as those who were invited to an in-person interview; however, it doesn't mean you can't match there. I would suggest to rank it unless you'd rather not match than be at that site for a year. That advice actually goes to all applicants - you should rank every site unless you would rather not match than to be at that site. Obviously if it's less desirable, you should rank it lower, but the algorithm prioritizes your higher sites and you will only end up at a lower ranked one if your higher ranked sites match with applicants who they ranked higher. Therefore, it doesn't hurt you to rank as many sites as you can - again, unless you absolutely would not want to spend a year there. Otherwise, don't play the "game" of trying to figure out where places are going to rank you. The algorithm does favor applicants in that it tries to match you at your highest ranked place as possible, so rank your sites in the order from most to least liked. I know this process is grueling so good luck to you all!

Interview at UC Riverside Counseling Center. I heard today and interview dates are during the second and third weeks of January.

This was the last site I was waiting to heard from! The waiting is finally over!

Thank you all for all the support and kind words throughout this process. This thread was a big help during this wild process. I want to wish you all the best of luck in your interviews!

So this is probably obvious, but I want to double check. If a site requires an in person interview and you can’t make it do to scheduling conflicts then that site should not be ranked, correct?

If they require an in-person and you don't attend, it's almost guaranteed that they won't rank you (unless they tell you otherwise). However, you could still rank the program and it wouldn't hurt you. If they didn't rank you, it would just skip over that site for you and move to your next ranking. But, it's probably not worth the energy to figure out where to rank it because unless they tell you that you're still under consideration, I'd bet on them not ranking you.

Some of the interview questions I’ve gotten are best answered with examples that I also used in my essays. Is it bad to still use those answers? I’ll also post in the other thread devoted to interview questions, but thought I’d throw it out here too

Neuropsych peeps: I've seen several posts on here from individuals are seeking to specialize in this area, as well as feeling discouraged about few invites received. I just wanted to provide some informative feedback, not sure if this will help anyone feel any better but I feel it's quite telling. There appears to be a huge imbalance of neuropsychology applicants compared to other areas.

So one VA that I interviewed at has one spot for their neuropsychology track and they received 65 applications for this ONE position, they interviewed roughly 10 for the 1 spot. For the other emphasis positions at this site (there were 6 of them), each spot received only roughly 16 applications for each individual position. So, what I guess I'm saying is that you shouldn't get down on yourself because the odds for the neuropsych positions are very very tough. Not sure if this level of imbalance is a normal thing, or if perhaps this year happens to be saturated with people seeking neuropsychology specialization. I am convinced that if I had applied last year I wouldn't have gotten the invites that I did because in this past year I really beefed up the number of publications on my CV.

Anyhow, if you didn't get an invite somewhere you really wanted and other cohort members that are specializing in other areas are getting more invites than you, this is why, it's not that you're not a good applicant. Don't forget self-compassion.

Good luck everyone!

It’s fine to use the same example. More importantly though, make sure your answers are applicable to the site.

So true! Specialty tracks like neuro, forensic, and peds are an entirely different process all together from general tracks. One thing that I think would be SUPER helpful in the future would be for sites to break down the information in the APPIC directory by track and not by site (e.g. 65 applications for the neuro track, 11 interviews, 1 intern). That way you could have a much better sense what the actual match rates are and how competitive it is. Similarly, it would be awesome if the APPIC match statistics could also account for different tracks. For instance, in the 2018 match, 90% of applicants matched at their 5th or higher ranked site, but I wonder what that breakdown would look like if it was just neuro applicants alone?

I finally heard from all of the sites I applied to!

This site has been SO helpful for getting through the application process!

I was everyone happy holidays and good luck with their interviews.

I’ll be periodically checking the site through match day but by all means DM me if you’d like. I’m always open to chat. Take care everyone!! 🙂

I know the thread is pretty much dead at this point, but has anyone heard from Kennedy’s trauma track? Their date was today but I haven’t heard either way...

I saw two people received invites a few days ago. I also haven’t heard either way but I’m assuming it’s a rejection.

My last notification date is today! Assuming a rejection but just want to be done with this part so I can focus on holidays with the family for the first time in four years!

Has anyone received confirmation from Canandaigua? I emailed them on Monday with my requested interview date but I still haven't heard anything and I'm not sure if they forgot about me...
