APPIC Internship Interview Invitation Thread (2020)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Unfortunate, yes, but likely a an administrative oversight. That site gets >200 applications a year, probably a keystroke mistake by an admin individual.

241, to be exact. It provides some solace to see my name amongst 181 other candidates.

Congratulations, to anyone who was offered an interview!

It's a positive. The majority of the ranking should be based on objective factors. The interview is really more about your chance to see and evaluate the program, rather than the other way around. Interviews tend to slide people down the rankings more than slide some people up (e.g., people who are rude, glaring personality problems, etc).
Thank you so much for this information. I have been really conflicted about doing phone/skype interviews at sites that I cannot afford to travel to. I would much rather save what little money I have for my potential move than spend it all traveling for interviews. I even mentioned in one of my essays that I come from a low income background, so I really hope not being able to attend interviews in-person does not factor against me in the end.

Hey guys has anyone heard from Terminal Island?? I think it's the only BOP I haven't heard anything about! Also, if you get asked to do the USAJobs application is that a good indication you will get an interview or do they weed out after that process too? I hope it's the former because that would mean I at least have good news from MDC LA 🙂

I was at ABCT and I heard that McLean Hospital sends out their invitations/rejections in waves by geographical region of the applicant.
Thanks for sharing! Just wanted to add that it also sounded like McLean won’t start sending out until after Thanksgiving.

@Balenciaga do you have any more info on what "waves by geographical region" means? Is that within the same day or across different dates...?

For anyone who was at the ABCT reception, did McLean mention what date(s) their interviews were? I see 12/14 is listed as "tentative" in their materials but would love to know for sure. They're one of my top choices so I want to make sure I can be available if I get an invite. Heard from almost all of my other sites so schedule is getting full :/

Good Morning!

Has anyone heard from the following sites:

Lehigh University
Geisinger Medical Center-Child (Hospital Based)
Youth Consultation Services
Veteran Affairs New Jersey Health Care System
Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences
Rutgers Student Health-CAPS

If I have not heard from these sites and others have gotten invitations should I just take it as a rejection?

Rutgers Biomedical has started sending out invitations.

I've known two folks who had a practicum experience there and they both loved it. Congrats!

I haven't heard from Terminal Island or Lexington! I was offered the USAJobs process to six others (Allenwood, Petersburg, Devens, Fort Worth, Rochester, and Springfield) and rejected formally from Terre Haute and Butner. I heard from a current Fort Worth intern in my program that all applicants asked to go through USAJobs last year were ranked "best qualified". I think because we were already so heavily screened, there is a good likelihood that we will get offered interviews! Good luck! 🙂

Me thinking I was qualified enough for a position and getting 5/6 rejections

This may be kind of an odd question but when people are receiving rejections via email, is anyone responding back with a thank you for your consideration type of response? Just curious what best practice might be. Part of me feels it is a kind gesture to close the loop and part of me feels like TDs may not want to get bombarded with responses like these. Thoughts?

Basing rankings on the written application doesn’t mean they are basing it on objective factors. The only objective factors are the number of hours and practicum sites.

Same.

I am not loving your comment because it is true, I am loving it because I relate!!!!

Rejected from University of Washington’s general child track and from Western State Hospital. KEEP THE EMAILS COMIN, I AM READY TO BE HURT AGAIN

Also, I just wanted to say thanks to folks sharing rejections. I see some of you getting rejected from sites I am rejected from, and getting invited to sites I was super impressed by when researching where to apply to. It makes me feel like despite the wave of rejections, there could still be some hope that I too could get invites to some neat sites, and honestly makes it hurt a little less that applicants I would consider very qualified are also rejected.

Rejected from The Medical College of Wisconsin - Health Psychology Residency Program. ...but they included "however, we thought your application was quite competitive. Should the opportunity to interview arise, we will reach out." I'm not sure if that's false hope or a legitimate waitlist.

Has anyone heard of people getting interviews at VAs if they do not have VA practicum experience? I'm hearing mixed things on this!

We hashed this out about a month ago. The answer is yes. I too have zero VA experience...and I applied to 15 of them. So far, I've been rejected from 4 of them. So...yeah, this theory is really panning out. 😛

Half of the sites I interviewed at a few years ago were VAs (or consortiums) and I had no VA practicum experience in grad school.

Anyone else apply to Iowa City VA !? I believe their notification date listed is today and I am getting anxious!!!!

I was told that VA experience helps a lot, but isn't required by any means. However, VA experience seems to be "necessary" for post-doctoral positions per my friend's advice. This came from someone who has gone through this process and is highly knowledgable with regard to how VA's hire/operate. Plenty of people get interview invites without prior VA practicum experience from what I can tell. Good luck!

I've mainly gotten interviews at VAs and I have no formal experience in that setting. It doesn't hurt but it doesn't mean you can't!!
