Does anyone know what it means for a site to say they are not an APPIC member

Do they at least have provisional APPIC membership? If not, I do not believe they can participate in the match. I currently see nine sites on the APPIC Directory that have this provisional membership.

My understanding of this scenario, prior to semi-recent changes, is that non-APPIC members were most frequently non-APA/CPA-accredited, as APA accreditation - pending associated costs - essentially guarantees that a site meets APPIC criteria. Previously, non-APA-accredited sites were permitted to enter Phase I with APPIC membership, and Phase 2 without APPIC membership. As of this past summer, there is now a requirement that sites wishing to participate in any phase of the match must be either provisional or full APPIC members. Many of these sites pursued provisional membership in the summer. It was thought that this would place smaller sites at a disadvantage due to funding abilities for APPIC membership and/or pursuing APA accreditation, though I believe APPIC developed methods to assist sites that experience financial hardship with these new expectations.

Anyone else knowledgeable in this area can feel free to correct me.

It is not against policy, but also not necessary. We actually ask our applicants not to. If you do send one, make it short. Most of these people get dozens of e-mails daily, keep their load light. DO NOT mention any ranking info in the e-mail.

The MATCH NEWS: Match Policies & Communication email from December 1 provides helpful guidelines around these policies. One particularly helpful paragraph stated:

"Match Policy #7 also states that, other than the specific limitations on the communication of ranking information, sites and applicants are free to communicate about other matters. It is perfectly acceptable for applicants and programs to express their interest and enthusiasm for each other without violating these policies. The best approach is simply to follow the normal rules of professional and courteous interaction and communication while avoiding the discussion of any information about rankings. For example, it is perfectly acceptable for an applicant to say things like, "Your program seems like an excellent fit for my interests" or "I was very impressed by your child rotation, and I'm very excited about the possibility of working there." Similarly, programs may convey that they are impressed with an applicant's credentials and the apparent goodness of fit."

My DCT's advice has been to keep thank you emails very short (like 2 sentences).

I got an email from the TD 2 weeks ago exactly saying they are a bit delayed bc she is resigning and someone else is coming in. She said they expect to have offers out within two weeks - which would mean today... anyone heard anything?

Has anyone received an interview offer from Middlesex Health in Connecticut? They scheduled me for an interview tomorrow, but never sent the agenda or the introduction video. I have reached out to the director via email, but have not yet heard back, and am getting a little nervous now.

I am not a fan of the virtual interviews but trying to make the best of it! I really wish we could go to the sites - even though it would cost a lot of money. It just makes this whole process challenging. Hopefully they are going well for you!

I'm feeling so grateful I did not have to (pay for and) fly all across the country for these interviews. While it would be nice to see sites in person (especially in cities I've never been to), I hope very much that this becomes the norm for future applicants. The financial and time burden on applicants is normally so high and also majorly disadvantages those who can't afford it. In the future, if interviews stayed virtual for everyone, candidates could always choose to visit a city and check it out if they really want to and have the funds to do so.

Also, I'll weigh in again after I finish all the interviews, but they are much more enjoyable and less stressful than I was led to believe. Writing applications and waiting for invites/rejections was far more brutal. However since they've all been good so far, I'm sure the rank list will be agonizing to make.

I agree with all of this. And some sites, like counseling centers, had already jumped on the equity train and had virtual interviews long before the pandemic. I received interviews at most of the sites I applied to. I would not have been able to apply to a good chunk of them if I had to fly out, giving me less options for match. I’ve already decided not to rank a couple of sites based on interviews, but I’m still in an advantageous position.

I also second how enjoyable they’ve been. While it would be nice to see the site, that’s just not a huge deal breaker for me. I’ve been able to get a clear picture of everyone’s personality (for better and worse!) during virtual interviews. Anything else that I might need to “see” (traffic, for example) certainly factors into a decision but ultimately it’s not a deal breaker. Most of my sites have recorded video walkthroughs so I already know what the exterior and interior of the facilities look like. I’ve had a much more enjoyable time being in the comfort of my own home than I have in any other interview I’ve ever done in my life!

From my understanding, sites that use their interns as "work horses" don't value training as much as other sites. Therefore supervision is typically more lax, interns write a lot, and you may not necessarily see novel referrals due to the limited live supervision opportunities. With that said, if you don't want a lot of live supervision, prefer autonomy, and enjoy writing reports (if that's possible) these sites may be ideal to you. Generally, you will also work more hours per week, on average, compared to other sites.

Keep in mind I am applying now and this information is from various supervisors and previous interns, so take it with a grain of salt.

It's mostly referring to situations in which you are probably working 50-60 hours a week. It is not necessarily poor training. In some cases it is, but I can also identify a handful of workhorse neuro programs that I'd also rank in the top 20 of sites for neuro training.

We won't know what sites are participating in Phase II until February 19th because we have to know who matched where and what sites have remaining slots. There's a bunch of info about the process on the APPIC website. 🙂

I typically send very brief thank you notes and would like to do so for this site (one of my top tops!!), but don't want to overstep. Email information for faculty I interviewed with is publicly posted in the program materials/handbook so not like I have to go digging to contact. Thanks!

When I was previously unsure, I sent the message (directly thanking the psychologists that I interviewed with) to that "point person," who then offered to forward it on to the appropriate members.

This is a good approach. There is likely a point person designated to assist the TD so they are not overrun with emails. This is an extremely busy time of year for many programs (we have interviews for practicum students, interns, fellows and staff positions within the next two months). When I get emails thanking faculty I always forward them on.

* Please do not be discouraged from asking questions! This is an important decision for you, and gathering information is part of that decision. Though I will say that
by asking all questions in one email it is easier to respond (at least for me).

I had the same situation with them last week but they emailed me the schedule with the links on Wednesday so I’d say if you don’t hear by the end of today then email them
