I'm a grad student at Concordia and my supervisor already had an interview with a candidate. (I don't know about other labs though.)

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum. This year I applied to York, McGill, Ottawa, Windsor and Calgary.

I had and interview and received an informal acceptance to Windsor (formal acceptances will be out this week or next).

Still waiting to hear from the rest 🙂

I called Sask today. Grad sec said 1st round invites have gone out. If there is people who don't accept they will send out 2nd round invites after April 15. She wouldn't tell me where I was standing in the process, but said I could call/e-mail my POI and ask. I'll assume that is a rejection!

nope, only those with interviews are in the "know"... I have a friend that was invited for an interview for the exp. program. i wish they would just cut the bottom half out already and be more communicative. last year I waited until like April 16 for a response.

Great idea to consolidate the posts, deadmau5. I've been lurking for a while, but I figure I might as well add my stats:

- Phone interview with Waterloo POI in early Feb; haven't heard anything since.
- I can confirm that someone I know was accepted at Dalhousie (they heard back in early Feb, by email) -- bsc, I'm wondering if we go to the same school? I may try to send you a message!

last year I heard back very early... like late Feb that I was rejected.
Also last year I heard mid-march for Concordia.

I was rejected from Calgary a little over a month ago.

After some pestering, UVic has let me know I'm 4th on the waiting list (didn't get an interview, they only interview top 3) and the first choices should have their letters now or very soon.

I have a friend who was accepted at Dalhousie and York Clinical Developmental - she's still waiting on Queens.

I'm a bit confused...they only interview the top 3 applicants but from the stats on their website they state that they accepted 14 clinical students in the 2009 cycle? 😕 Sorry if this is an obvious question, but do you mean they interview the top 3 from the waitlist?

I'm assuming what was meant was that each Prof interviews their top 3 choices and then sends out acceptance to their first choice out of that 3.

So for 2009 - 14 profs interviewed 3 each (42 total), and 14 were given acceptances.

I was rejected from Calgary a little over a month ago.

That's interesting.... I haven't been rejected or accepted. I've only had my POI tell me it wasn't looking good! hmmm!

At the end of last week, I received acceptance to the clinical programs at both McGill and Concordia. I'm elated, but have a tough decision ahead. Any current students have advice to sway me to one of the two?

Yes - sorry for the lack of clarity - that's how it was explained, at least for my POI. Other profs may only interview one or two people, but this particular POI interviewed three and had a backup list (me ).

I have not heard back after interviewing with Ryerson either... that is a mystery to me, especially if they are not responding to your emails.

Paperweights: did you at least get a rejection letter? After submitting all my docs they sent me an email confirming that my application was now complete and said that I would receive notification by postal mail.

i called a couple of times, no answer. maybe it's just me, lol.

esiotrot: yes, eventually they finally did get around to officially rejecting me but it was MUCH later. I must have been waitlisted or something? It was really frusturating; they made me fly across the country last minute for an interview, promised to let me know, and I didn't hear anything for months. I'm really glad I didn't end up going there.

Frustrating indeed. When I called, she told me that the first round of invites have gone out, and that there would be more going out. My POI said that I'd hear back end of Feb/early March. I'll call next week.

So far - acceptance at U of Manitoba - Clinical Psych.... POI emailed end of January and formal letter received Feb. 24 - excellent funding package; acceptance at Brock U - Social Psych - POI emailed at end of January - formal letter received Feb. 12 - excellent funding offer; Clinical Psych at U of Victoria - had 3rd interview on March 18 - they say I should "hear soon".... Rejected at Concordia and Western; no news from Calgary, Lakehead, Carleton, Dalhousie

Having gone to McGill and knowing professors that have left McGill to teach at Concordia I would go with Concordia. McGill is a great school, but the psych department there, as a whole, is pretty full of itself. It has great professors, but the vibe at Concordia is much more relaxed and approachable. Clinicians from Montreal hospitals have told me that in general, Concordia students enter internships with better clinical skills, and just seem more at ease, which I would chalk-up to the more open/welcoming environment.

That being said, ultimately the most important factor in your decision, IMO, is how well you gelled with the POI during your interview, and whether or not you like one's research more than the other. If possible, I would e-mail/call current grad students to get more of a sense of what it's like to be supervised by each professor.

I am not there right now but as a soon to be doctoral student, I already think about internship sites for Clinical Psych and was actually thinking about McGill 🙂 Is there one? Do you know? I checked their webpage and couldn't find it...😕

The research output at Concordia is of higher quality in the clinical areas, in my opinion.

I'm going to say the thing that you are not supposed to say about getting into clinical psych in Canada- it can be a total crap shoot. You can have good grades, GREs, experience etc. and yet the person you applied to work with has already picked out their next grad student from their own lab, or they aren't taking someone, or someone fit better with their interests etc.. I've worked at a few universities, and got into 2 programs last year (and rejected from 2!) and I know people who got in in part because they were predetermined at both schools. We are talking about less than 10% of applicants getting into the program. It's a big game, you need to learn to play it right from September.

I wish you all luck in the future, if you REALLY want this you will keep trying.

Just received my acceptance letter for clinical psych at U Vic by email. 🙂
