hey all,

today has been a pretty disappointing day after receiving my mcat score of 23 (6 in vr 😕) I had been averaging 9-8-10 on the AAMCs but just had a bad day. My gpa is a 3.92 overall but I know that I need to retake the MCAT to improve the VR and score at least a few points higher.

My main question was about applying this cycle to DO's. Should I submit my application the very first day with my current MCAT score and just state that I will be re-taking sometime in June? Or should I wait until I receive my retake score to apply? I've always heard applying early and broadly gives you the best chance for acceptance that's why I am in this dilemma. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It's a no brainer, absolutely submit as early as possible to all schools that do no screen out for low MCATs. Your GPA is high enough that you will get some interest somewhere even with a 23 but many DO schools will also put you on hold hoping/expecting for a higher MCAT retake and once you do, they will likely offer you an interview. I say all of this out of experience.

you may be able to slide into a lower tier DO school but a retake with that baller gpa you could get into a top tier DO school or an MD school. but i would submit to one school just to be safe, and only one school. that way when you do get your new score, you can link your new mcat and the next day all the schools see your app.

Please retake ASAP and apply early. Even with a 27 or 28, you could get into an MD program or at least the most competitive DO programs. I thought it helped to retake within 2 months of my first since I was in the mode and new where I went wrong. I raised my score 4 points and the rest is history.

No offense or anything but wtf is up with people with pretty solid GPAs (3.6 and up) not absolutely annihilating their MCATs? WTF??

Sometimes it's a section like verbal. I have a 3.7 but a 25 MCAT (7 VR, 9 sciences). F*ck verbal and it's more than one answer being correct but one is more correct questions.

wow. I hate those type of questions! I start MCAT studying soon as well, but these threads with people with solid GPAs doing not too hot and some with multiple retakes are kind of shocking to say the least. The MCAT is more important than people think in my opinion.

Yeah, wait til you take the later diagnostics. You really cannot increase verbal section abilities.

I can't imagine studying for verbal outside of having an idea about how the questions and answers are presented. I think it just comes with a long history of reading for understanding.

And luck.

Please don't waste that GPA on a DO school.

I don't think I'd call it "wasting" their GPA to go to a DO school. Also, their practice MCAT scores were ~27 (low for MD even with the GPA).

OP, retake and get a 26+ and be in great shape for basically any DO program. Get above a 30 and be competitive for any DO and many MD programs.

Not all majors or colleges are the same. My buddy with a 3.4 graduated valedictorian from college. He was a physics major.
