hi, i'm kind of new here and just wanted to get a feel about who all will be applying this admissions cycle (aka who i will be comisserating with this year). Also if you don't mind, i would like to know where ya'll are thinking of applying and why.

I'll go first: I am applying to UGA, Mississippi, UPenn, TexasA&M, Va/Md, NCSate, & Tufts. I am from SC which contracts with UGA (17) & Mississippi (5), so out of state everywhere else though my whole family is from NC and I go to Washington & Lee in Virginia. And many W&L alumns have wound up at Penn. So those are my schools and my reasons

yalls turn...

I'm sorry to take up space on this thread as I am not applying this cycle but I wanted to say welcome to SDN and good luck with your apps!!! :luck:

I go to UF for undergrad and Im applying to UF for Vet school.

I live in California and am applying to UC Davis, Colorado State, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri and Penn - all schools that I have the prereqs for. Last year I only applied to one school, which was a big mistake.

i will be applying next year, and i will probably apply to all the schools i qualify for. my gpa now is only a 3.07 and i only have small amount of experience:

100 hrs small animal vet clinic
10 hrs large animal vet clinic
100 hrs zoo experience
100 hrs volunteering with research horses
500 hrs large animal experience

and its crazy cuz i've seen people apply with a little more than this amount and get accepted...but they have higher gpas. i'm studying for the gre this summer and taking only 1 class and interning at the vet clinics. i hope that by next year i raise my gpa to a 3.2 at least.

i'll probably try applying next year, if i don't get in, get my masters, apply again, if i dont get in apply to the carribean. i'm 25 yrs old right now...but i really want to do this, and i'll do anything to do it.

anyway, i probably gave you way more info than you wanted. lol. but this is my plan. 🙂

I live in Nevada, and I will be applying as a WICHE applicant to UCDavis, Washington State, Oregon State, *Colorado State* (my personal fav!), and also to Michigan State and possibly Tufts (still debating). I am obviously out of state, and this is my second round applying 🙁

I'll be applying most likely to UC Davis's combined DVM/PhD program, the DVM program and the graduate group in Genetics PhD program.

Right now I live in FL but we are moving to Davis in 2 months.

Super nervous about it!

I've got my undergraduate thesis to occupy me right now until July 19th, then Molecular Bio II and Physics II until August 2nd, then moving type things after that though....

I go to Kansas State. I am a first time applicant applying to Kansas State, Colorado, and Missouri. 🙂

I'm from New York and so far I will be sending in my appliction not this year but next year...I'm definately applying to Cornell and UPenn, not sure about the others, never visited them before. University of Illinois looks nice too.

Has anybody applied to a vet school without even visiting it? I mean the costs of visiting 3 or 4 schools racks up quite a bit, I would probabaly apply to them and then take the trip if they accept me.

I'm also from New York and will be applying to Penn, Tufts, VA-MD, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Tennessee and Colorado. This is my first time applying.

Also, to GallopRealyFast, I have not visited any of these schools, but most of them interview and give a tour of the campus at that time. I'll tour the schools at that time when it looks like they are interested in potentially accepting me

When I applied I only visited my state school (UCDavis) and the school I interviewed at (Kansas State). I accepted my offer at CSU without ever seeing it but read extensively about their program and the city of Fort Collins on the web. I couldn't afford to visit all 7 schools I applied to and found that this was sufficient to make my decision.

I too applied to schools without visiting them first but after I got an interview and went to the schools then I knew which ones I would actually be able to happily attend. Not to talk bad about Illinois because it does seem to have a great program and very nice professors/students but the facilities were older than I expected and its literally in the middle of nowhere, actually in the middle of a cornfield. But then again I have gotten spoiled living in Oregon for the past 5 years. I think if you want it bad enough then you'll go anywhere but given the choice then you'll probably be pickier about the program and the location. I would have gone to Illinois without any regrets but since I also got into some other locations then I was allowed to be picky.

UF and OK state

I applied to more than that last year, but it gave me a year to really know where I want to go.
Besides, this year I have a new squirrel avatar, so I'm bound to get in 😳

i had only seen my in-state school out of the five i applied to. just do a lot of talking 😉 and get as much info as you can as far as what's important to you.

and philo... i laughed! i'm rootin for ya this year. not that it's a "luck" type of thing, but it doesn't hurt, so: :luck:!

NICE everybody Thanks! Its so cool to talk to other pre-vets, I haven't met any in my 2 years of college.

The only school I visited before I applied was NCSU and that was because I was living in Raleigh. The other schools I applied to had interviews, so I got to see them then. It definitely helped in my decision making process. If your school of choice doesn't have an interview, try to visit, but if financial or time constrains don't let you, try talking to students who attend that school, talking to the admissions office, and researching on the web.

Good luck to all those applying next cycle. :luck:

i'm applying for 2008, i've been taking my pre-req classes p/t the last 3-4 years because i already have an undergrad (in art) and i wanted to take more biology classes than just the pre-reqs. my science gpa kinda blows (3.1) but my undergrad gpa rules, but was in an entirely unrelated subject (3.7).

i'm in chicago and will be applying to illinois, madison, georgia, missouri, iowa and Guelph. i have lots of varied experience and am currently a lab tech working hands on with research pigs at a University.

I'm doing hands on pig research with a vet this summer too. Gotta love the lingering smell of pigs on your clothes... i have to shower immediately everyday. Butoverall the pigs are really fun especially the little ones.

Applying for the first time this year. I'm an undergrad at A&M, so I'm applying there, Mississippi, Wisconsin & Penn, maybe CSU and/or KSU as well. Reasons vary, but include OOS acceptance rates, equine programs, and nonresident tuition. In-state tuition would be nice, but since I have a somewhat low science GPA and otherwise average stats, applying broadly seems like a good idea.

I'm applying for the first time this year. I'm undergrad at NYU, and so far I'm applying to Cornell (in-state), Penn, Tufts, and possibly Tennessee, Minnesota, and maybe one more. I have a 3.75 in bio, but not a whole lot of vet/animal experience outside of small animals. Most of the schools I'm applying to are because they're not so far from home or are kind to out-of-staters. But I actually kind of want to go to Cornell with its problem-based curriculum. So if I don't get into Cornell, I probably won't really care that much where I go.

Besides, this year I have a new squirrel avatar, so I'm bound to get in 😳

This had me laughing this morning. "SuperSquirrel" is certainly a good friend to have, in any case.

I applied to 7 schools my first round. In-State to Davis, then CSU, OSU, WSU, TA&M, Tufts, Cornell. No love.

Just recovering from spinal surgery had me less than interested in the application process second time around. Applied only to schools with no supplemental app. 10 of them. Interviewed at Davis and at MSU. LOVED Michigan when I got here. Adored it. Was thrilled when I was accepted here. Don't mind so much the OOS tuition thing. It's just numbers on paper somewhere at the moment, LOL.

Good luck to you all! (Run- run away as fast as you can!) Sorry, that little voice must be ignored. It's a downer being a vet student sometimes.:scared:

i am thinking of applying to A&M but my school does not have a technical writing course adn none are offered nonline... how stringent is that requirement? do you know. and I noticed not that many apply from out of state due to the texas med application.. is is similar to the vmcas or not? I would be out of state with a 3.9+ science/prereq gpa and a 3.8 overall (at our school an A- is a 3.66 and i am majoring in biology and minoring in studio art). And i have about 800 hrs in small animal vet, 200 hrs with mixed animal (mainly large animal), 40 hrs mair foaling with equine vet, and 400hrs pig research with at the FDA CVM with a vet. I also have extensive small animal experience with lots of volunteer hourse at the SPCA, pet therapy, and owning cats and dogs all my life. I am involved in extracurriculars like tour guide at my school, LIFE, and my sorority. Should I even bother applying out of state?

And have someone from each discipline proof- read your app and your PS.

What is a mair? I know about mares. They have manes and tails and hooves and soft noses and wide-set eyes. They are female horses.

I had just such an embarrassing moment during my interview. Couldn't come up with "squamous cell carcinoma"... I was like, "you know... the cancer that cats get in their noses..." They went "yah. we know. Do you?"

Kill me now! (if you can get the puddle that used to be me out from under this chair!)

I would encourage all of you to Apply Smart. Each year a book is plublished by Purdue titled, Veterinary Medical School Admission Requirements. This book will show you the incoming stats of all the AVMA accredited vet schools, including the number of in-state and out-of -state applications they received and the number of students accepted in each category. For example; it states that the University of Pennsylvania received 1,022 nonresident applications last cycle, from that pool they had 45 new entrants. That included many New Jersey residents which UPENN has a contract with. By going through the book you can see the average incoming GPAs and GREs for each school, and better judge your individual chances.

Secondly, think out-of the box. Don't be afraid to research schools outside of the United States. Many of them accept several U.S and Canadian students every year. I know the logic for many students is, "if I don't get in this year, I will retake some classes, and apply to even more schools next year." It is important to remember that each extra year it takes you to gain acceptance, is a year's salary off of your future income, and that's a large sum of money!

I wish you all the best of success!

I go to UF for undergrad and Im applying to UF for Vet school.

I am a uF undergrad too, hoping to get uf's attention this year. anyone else applying to uf for 2008? i am also applying to western and mississippi. 😳

Add me to the list of applications for (hopeful) 2008 matriculation. 🙂 Like a couple others, I have been finishing up a few pre-req's p/t from my first BS. I have been in my current career for 19 years, but this is my chance to follow my one true passion. Good luck to one and all!
