April 2004 MCAT studying progress Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Cerebrus, I think we've been studying the same material. I've read about 100 pages of bio from the Kaplan book (2002, but I am sure the book doesn't change that much each year). I'll probably do 30 more pages today.

Soon, I will be devoting my lunch hour which 1hr to study verbal.
Since there is no verbal studying. I will probably read news paper, journals, magazine.. something will increase my speed reading and comprehension.

So much for doing 30 more pages today. I ended up rereading some of the more confusing material that I've already done this week and making a few flashcards.

Hey Peeps!!

Alright, this is really cool. I still have 2 more finals, and want to take like 2 or 3 days to recharge my batteries before i do MCAT full time this winter break. Keep up the good work, and let's keep posting to keep each other motivated and on track.

One more final for me--physiology. I guess studying for that sort of counts as MCAT studying.
How much does everyone plan to study over winter break? I'm going to try to refresh all the sciences and get myself pretty much up to speed so I can start working practice tests in February.
Oh, and is anyone as worried as I am about the verbal section?

I am just done with finals today. Plan to chill with my family and friends until 1/2/04 then I will put on my MCAT thinking caps. Hopefully, I will start working on the ExamCracker 101 series and the AAMC workbook. Don't really know how to structure my studying since I am too cheap to pay for a prep course. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! 🙂

Since I am not student, I have no finals. Yeepp!!!
But need to revise a few hours during the holiday work off days.

I just took the verbal part of 3R (my first verbal) and scored a 10. I think I could have done better but I wasted way too much time on passage III (what a @#^&#$😡 +pissed+ 😡 POS confusing, poorly written passage) and ran out of time at the end (i finished but i didnt get to put much thought into my answers). Oh well, a 10 isnt bad for my first practice attempt at MCAT verbal.

Reviewing my answers i see that it was the confucious passage that killed me - I missed like 6 questions on that one passage🙁

I'm through almost all the Bio on Kaplan 2003 book (flash cards for each chapter and a little supplementing with EK AO). I took my bio courses in 94-95, so there's a lot of dust to clear...I'm wrapping up by reading the EK 5ed. Bio review book. EK seems like it comes with more fluff than necessary, but you don't have to be a genius to get their explanations - Kaplan seems to be a bit more straight forward, so I use that as my structural guide.
I'm gonna move to chemistry next...

What's the word on Chem and Physics formulas - definitely memorize?

Cerebrus- Where can one get his hands on these practice MCAT materials of which you speak? (A 10 on verbal is nice!)

Confucius claims another victim!! This is one of the hardest VR passages on any of the AAMC tests!

I actually started reviewing since October when my review course started. With classes and finals and all I haven't really been studied MCAT stuff full time. Think I'll just chill next week since its Christmas and all but once that is over it's back to studying. So far I've done quite a bit of biology and physics but not too much general or organic chemistry. Also I've been reading the Time magazine and Wall Street Journal that the course arranged to have sent to my house. Well good luck to everyone. Let's keep updating this thread.

I only had one wrong on that passage, it was the Picasso passage that always killed me.

I've been lazy lately... I went to Disneyland yesterday instead of studying, and it looks like I won't get much studying done today.

I finally bought a timer today. I planned to use it to time myself for the passages but I guess it's too early to use it though.

yea...maybe i should too. I think i've had enough of a break...but its hard to study at home. Like my family won't understand why i want to be studying when i'm off from school...and why i'm not spending any time w/them. So this week's been me relaxing, spending time...etc....but hopefully tommarrow (that magical word "tommarrow") i'll start (actually, i'm going shopping tomm...hmmm) 😉

Just a heads-up for any bruins (UCLA students) out there

If you want to get involved with a UCLA group that does free MCAT prep, there will be signs all over bruin walk and in the CS quad for bruinmap, my mcat-tutoring-for-all program.
things will be started this coming quarter so if you need some inspiration to study, come and check out the introductory meeting

here ends the shameless plug

For those of you who are studying over winter break, how much are you doing? I'm trying to do 1-2 hours a day. I figure that since it IS break, I shouldn't overdo it with the studying, but, at the same time, I want to be on top of things.

ummm, well uh none since last Saturday🙁 *ashamed*

Haha, don't feel bad, Cerebrus. Notice I said that I am "trying" to study that much. That doesn't necessarily mean that it's happening. 😉

I did two hours today... I haven't gotten much done lately, so it feels good to make progress. I finished up circulation/the kidneys and started the endocrine system.

Studying PROGRESS thread? 😱 Maybe I should get started soon! I wrote in Aug'03 and got 8P, 6V😡 ,9B, O. So obviously I have to concentrate on verbal. Since then I've gotten a couple of examkrackers books which I hope will help. I'll be taking physiology II next term so that should keep me up to par for that area. Later folks

Okay, I really did study today.

Resolution #1 - No more foolishness.

(when it comes to the MCAT anyways)

I started reading through the biology part of the Kaplan Comprehensive Review book. I also dug into some of my old notes from this semester, since there was some information overlap.

I also registered for the Kaplan classroom course. I start on 1.11.
Now I know there are a few users who don't like Kaplan, but hey, it's the only one here. No Princeton Review around this area 🙁

Hey guys!! I'm new hereee.... been to LA for Christmas... damn! do i love cali!! UCLAstudent, hey bud.... visited your campus!! gotta love the place!! .....oh well, yet to start training for MCAT wht do ya'll think? am i too late already? I'm gonna start jan 2 hopefully!!....anyway good to be a part of this thread....lookin forward to knownin ya'll

Good luck to all the April MCAT takers!!!

Hey Akshay! 🙂 Glad to hear that you liked the campus!

I hope studying is going well for everyone!

Still haven't done anything. Geez, I have turned into a procrastinator, superbum. I should get things started by 1/5/04. Currently enjoying break with friends and family in the Big Apple. Went to see the musical, Wonderful Town, on Tuesday. Plan to return to Philly this weekend and settle down before school starts on 1/12/04.

How's everyone doing? My prep course starts tomorrow. I've pretty much finished reviewing the bio information. I need to start doing passages.

Anyone taking the Kaplan prep course in new jersey starting sunday?

As for studying, read through some of the general chem section of the big book. I'm still feeling positive... but I know that's gonna get shot down soon :scared:

tests suck!

I officially began studying for MCAT yesterday. It's so slow. Wonder if I have ADD. 🙁

Started looking through some stuff last week, but starting in earnest tomorrow.

Is it me or what? I started studying the EK 1001 Q book and it took me two days to do and go over the first 100 Q's. Am I the only slug around???

I was planning to do some HW this weekend, but instead, I spent all these time watching a new movie series.

TV is your enemy in studying for the MCAT. If you don't have the willpower to not watch it, then get rid of it for the next three months. Take it over to a friend's house or something.

My Berkeley Review class started last Thursday. The bio instructor is really good. I actually think I am benefitting more from the books than anything else (lots of passages). I just get frustrated when I get too many questions wrong in a passage.

Yeah, the books are what we pay for. I feel the lectures are kind of a waste of time (except for some of the instructors). I get pissed off when I miss lots of questions too but that only shows we need to study more. Ya know?

I know you and I have the same prep course and location but probably different times. Good luck, if you have any questions, just PM.

hey, so i'm moving slowly. Have done 1 chap of bio, 2 of physics, 2 of G-chem.

What worried me is that after going to me TPR class yesterday, we did some verbal passages in class, and DAMN, i got sooo many wrong.

How are people apporaching verbal? like a couple of passages oa week/ day or is too early for that? I'm gonna buy EK's 101 soon...

Good luck everybody!!!

I am only getting 2-3 right out of a 7 question passage🙁

From verbal of course.
