Aloha All,
I am considering attending Argosy Honolulu. Is there anyone on the forum who is or knows any students attending AU Honolulu? Are students really 150K in debt after five years?
Mahalos,

I don't know anyone who is attending it (or ever considered it) but I do know that it sounds about right for an argosy school to come with a pricetag around $150,000.

I am currently a student at Argosy Honolulu. I'd be happy to honestly answer any questions for you. As a school it's had some pros and it's definitely had some cons, so you should be as well informed as possible before decided, particularly since it's so expensive.

The thread is over 2 years old so I'm guessing the decision has already been made😉

Edit: Whatever happened to RayneeDeigh anyways? Used to be a regular but haven't seen her on here in ages...

Also applying to Argosy Honolulu for the Fall 2010. Can anyone give any info they have and any experience with Argosy? Thank you very much for your help.

Professional schools have been discussed ad nauseum on the board. Just do a search or clikck on the linked thread at the bottom. But generally, argosy has the lowest rep of them all. Almost everyone will advise you against argosy and feeding the professional school market in general.

I attended Argosy University and it was by far the lowest quality experience of any school I have ever attended. First off, Argosy is not APA accredited. This aspect alone severely limits any employment consideration at the state and federal level (they require APA accreditation). Others who remained in the (Psy. D.) program have had significant challenges in being placed (for employment). I wish I had known about the rash of Argosy complaints and lawsuits BEFORE I spent the money on the Psy. D. program. Keep in mind Argosy is very expensive. Take the time and conduct research in ANY program you are considering, it will pay off in the long term (hint: APA accreditation is a key factor).

Read the complaint boards, especially the past and current lawsuits. They all have the same underlying theme: big time debt.😡

Argosy Honolulu campus... I think it's about fit.

It is APA accredited and will have a site visit within the next 2 years.
As with all programs, there are politics and influx of faculties but overall it is a solid school/program. It's small and warm. Hopefully you'll be lucky to have an awesome cohort!

Please remember that Hawaii is almost like a foreign country! It has its own local culture and what is considered "minority" in the continental US is the majority in Hawaii. It is also an expensive place to live.

The Honolulu PsyD clinical program is all about diversity. The students who go on to have competitive, APA internships have said that the unique multicultural environment at Argosy has stood out to interviewers when interviewing with various sites. You have the opportunity to work with Asian, Pacific Island, Caucasian, military clients, etc. etc. If you have an interest in working with the military population, this would be a great place.

To be honest, I have met few people who applied because they think it's easy to get in or they would have a great time at the beach all year long... some have expressed disillusion over how things work on the islands... so be smart and "check it out" before you make any decisions about applying to this school.

Good luck and let me know if you have any more questions!

Forgot to add:

There are three psychology programs now - clinical, school, and counseling (EdD)... clinical is the only accredited program and the most established.

Actually that warm HI air sounds pretty good about now. It snowed today haha.

JMO, but every person I know who has ever apped somewhere for the beaches or the "wine, women and song" has regretted it big time. Some VASTLY underestimated the program they picked and some found the costs of living didn't work out. It's got to be about academics first, the location will more or less work itself out.

+1 to this.

Hawaii has one of the better match rates for Argosy (~50% APA, IIRC), so that's a nod in its favor. The cost, esp. when one adds in Hawaii's inflated COL, is incredibly high, though.

Yeah, it's $1028/cr for the Hawaii campus. Now overall, it's just over $101k for all 5 years IIRC (plus books). My spreadsheet says average for programs is $96k for the entire program (plus books). Painful if unfunded.

I could never bring myself to pay for living in HI. Plus I'm such a paleface my skin practically burns off when I go outside.

Argosy is what you make of it, like all schools (esp with <85% match rates). Found out PCOM has 😱 <35% match, so it's off my list. That stuff isn't Argosy-specific, lots of schools have less-than-great match, you do need to factor that though when deciding where to apply.

Despite me making comments about their bad rep a year ago (which I now feel stupid for doing), Argosy DC actually made my visit list due to their program. Depending on need and merit, they do partially fund some students. They have in-house TAs, scholarships and work-study, especially for those with decent stats. Apparently some practicums are paid as well, but the number of unpaid ones outweigh the paid like always. :luck: This is all specific to Argosy DC, but there could be something similar in other APA-accredited campuses.
