How tough is it to match into Army EM? I have finally narrowed my choices down to FM or EM. I understand EM is pretty tough to get in the Army? My COMLEX is below avg, so I may have blown my chances.

It seems that FM and EM are somewhat "similar". How would it work if I went FM and decided I still would rather be pure EM? Can you reapply? What about reapplying after serving as a FP for awhile? How does this work?

Thanks

getting into any specialty in the Army is mostly how u do while u are on rotations there.... a friend of mine matched EM at BAMC with below average grades and average to below average step 1 board scores because he was a superstar on rotations and knew his **** and all 3 programs wanted him badly. Being a good doctor and getting a good step 1 score doesnt totally correlate because step 1 stuff isnt really medicine per se and some people just are not that interested in why Actin and Myosin form bonds that yada yada yada... Step 2 is a better indicator on how good of a doctor you will be in my opinion because its actual conditions and patient management rather than science BS that u are only interested in if you are a die hard researcher so just do good on step 2 and kick ass on rotations and you will get in.

Pick your specialty by what you want to do the rest of your life. If you want to be an emergency doc, you can find a spot somewhere in the country, some time. You may have to do a GMO tour first and serve your time, but you can match somewhere.
