CONGRATS!
Congrats on the USAREC boards, punkiedad. Make sure you stay on your recruiter until you literally have a copy of your control number. How they're going to allocate the 25-30 slots left for the JUL pay start is based on when the control number request was submitted/approved. I think you have a great shot.
Congratulations. Keep us posted...
so my brother in law is in the NG and i was telling him how this is something i want to do. he kept asking if i would get the 20k bonus. i said i highly doubt it. does anybody know for sure on that one?
You don't get that bonus going in to ASR as an officer. Folks who get that bonus earn it on the basis of the fact that they can get deployed at any time, unlike we fortunate types who are kept in med school and residency for many years before really earning our pay.so my brother in law is in the NG and i was telling him how this is something i want to do. he kept asking if i would get the 20k bonus. i said i highly doubt it. does anybody know for sure on that one?
Just an update from my recruiter, CPT Elliott: There are 15-20 spots left for July start. None of the 200 spots for October will be available early, and those might even be cut by 10-20%. He mentioned the very real possibility of starting a wait list.
I was told that after last week's board, there are only 4-5 spots left for July start. Also, I was told that the waiting list is a for sure thing. Once you board, you will be put on a waiting list for the next available spot.

Just talked to my recruiter. I passed the USAREC last week, and she received my ASR control number yesterday. I should swear in April 23!!!
In reference to my last question, does anyone know if I will be able to start July 1 even though I won't start MS1 classes til August?

Typically, we get a lot of different numbers depending on who you talk to.Just hear from my recruiter "I went on GKO and counted 160 are enrolled this FY. That leaves 40 positions. We received a control number for you so you should be good to go."
Here's how to read it:I looked at the report from USAREC and it looks like there are six people on it that were ASR, though I am just guessing. Don't know what all the acronyms
No. After you finish paperwork and are sworn in, they submit for a control number. Once you have a control number, you are requesting to start full-time pay via ASR at the next start (1 JUL, touch wood). So I thought a control number meant I was locked in, but it still sounds like there are neough spots for the people that went through March USAREC.
Here's how to read it:
Look at the list and count the number of names that have DC or MC under Corps, E67 under OC, and ARNGEP under Incentives. That's how many ASR folks were boarded. Make sense? You should be able to come up with a firm count that way.

The way they are doing this is that your control number date establishes your priority. If there aren't enough seats left for the 1 JUL start, it will be first come first serve. Anyone who doesn't get in for 1 JUL will be in line for 1 OCT. Make sense?
If ASR says I should get $1000 for housing because of where my school is, but I find a place to stay for $300, does that mean I get to pocket the rest, $700?
That'd be 12. Dentists are eligible for ASR, as are PA students. Thanks for the info.......I count 9 of the ARNGEP under incentives column, but also 3 that have ARNG DEN STU PROGRAM. I was thinking these were ASR but for dentists?? Either way, it looks like 9 or 12 total.
My recruiter didn't, but your mileage may vary. You should like you're in good shape. Are you saying you should not get the controld nunmber until after you swear in?
I'm sure it's nothing, but I'd tell your recruiter this. MDSSP is the Medical/Dental Student Stipend Program. It was the National Guard option for medical students pre-ASR. You get $1,900/month and owe the Guard 2 years for every one year you take it.EDIT: BTW, under the incentive column on my line it states MDSSP not ARNEGP ? Anyone know what this means??
Yep. The only caveat is that you have to show a copy of your lease or mortgage. You are eligible for the full BAH (housing allowance) regardless of how much you pay, but you have to have proof that you're paying something. If you live rent free with mom and dad, you don't get that nice full BAH.If ASR says I should get $1000 for housing because of where my school is, but I find a place to stay for $300, does that mean I get to pocket the rest, $700?

I'm sure they have you on ASR, especially as you have a control number, but I'd give your recruiter a heads up just to make sure everything is tied up with a bow.

I did for ASR. It was a listed requirement in the paperwork packet. Also needed marriage license, birth cert, etc. All but a pint of blood. When I was active duty, I NEVER had to show proof of a lease or mortgage...
And if you're an officer in the Army National Guard and a medical student, it's time to cut the cord.

No biggie. This won't affect anyone unless they're living with Mom and Dad. And if you're an officer in the Army National Guard and a medical student, it's time to cut the cord.
It might vary by state, but in mine, we are obligated to drill. I get the impression that I can miss one or two if my schedule doesn't allow for it (clerkships), but in general I'm expected to drill. My father (Navy Reservist) seems convinced because we are full-time that we are not obligated to drill. Is there any truth to this? I've been under the impression that we are still obligated to drill even though we aren't technically paid for the drills. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Link please? It shows on 1800goguard.com's description of ASR
"The Montgomery G.I. Bill, which pays up to $11,124 for college or other approved technical training State/Territory Educational benefits (vary by state/territory"

I'd be curious to see how often some of the other folks drill. EMH, amindwalker, anyone else care to weigh in?
From conversations I've had with others, the California National Guard sometimes seems to be a bit more "by the book" than other areas. This has not been my experience. I just get BAS & BAH on my check and have never had to show anything about where I live.

I'm really hoping that this is a reflection of the fact that you're doing clerkships. I'm really wondering how I'm going to swing taking a full weekend off during surgery and medicine months. My CO is not a physician, so I'm wondering how much understanding there will be that my schedule is not mine to dictate right now...About twice a year.

Your CO is technically the recruiter you're assisting, no? I thought everyone was assigned the recruiter as the CO and also assigned to a med unit to drill.Pretty much my entire chain of command, including my CO, are physicians or dentists.
I'm taking my step I in 3 weeks and starting my 3rd year May 1st. 4th year sounds like a lovely dream at this point...And your 4th year is not just clerkships, but interviews, sub-I's, couple board exams. It gets pretty busy...but still the best year ever.

I've yet to meet a doctor in our Guard. Only recruiters and medical service folks.

Oh and also, I know the GI bill has been discussed on here (whether or not we qualify). It shows on 1800goguard.com's description of ASR

So looks like we do.....but I guess until someone gets it I won't count on it.

.
I don't believe so. I'm attached to Joint force head quarters in a slot which makes me non-deployable. This is not the same unit as recruiting. Then I am assigned to medical detachment. I drill with this unit and the CO of this unit is my CO. My only relationship to recruiting is that which is outlined in my ASR contract. As I understand it I need to assist them enough to keep them happy so they don't write a negative letter to NGB requesting that I don't receive a renewed year of ASR next year.
Is it possible to go from navy reservist (with two years left) to ASR? I can't find any info on this.
I believe it depends on what your remaining obligation is to the Navy. If all you have left is your MSO then yes, it can transfer. If you still owe drilling status then I don't think so.
I just learned about this program a short time ago. I am trying to locate a recruiter in Ohio that can give me more information on this program; can anyone point me in the right direction?
