Any recommendations for affordable audio recorders with good sound quality to use for a qualitative research study? I will be recording and transcribing focus group sessions and would like to use a recorder that is reliable. Thanks!

I don't know what your budget or sound quality needs are, but the Zoom H2 (or related products) are excellent. It is quite flexible whether you are using it up close to take notes or recording sessions (e.g. people sitting around a table or in a circle). http://www.samsontech.com/zoom/products/handheld-audio-recorders/h2/

Note (just in case): I am in no way affiliated with the company, and the link above is not meant as an advertisement. The product has simply been useful for me in similar circumstances. I do encourage you to check out other recorders on the market to see which best fits your budget and needs. Good luck!

+1 for Olympus. We used Olympus digital recorders for clinical interviews in a research study, and they were absolutely wonderful!

I think the iPhone voice recorder would work just fine. As I have an iPhone that'd be great for me. I imagine Androids have an equivalent app.
