AZCOM Class of 2007

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
kristin-- thanks for the info! So how much time to you have to get excited about rotations?? i must say i am dissapointed that you will be mostly out of the picture by the time we start, but i know your enthusiasm is shared by most of the other students there as well. How do you like the mentor idea? do you get together with your 1st year much- or is there time for that?

By mentor do you mean preceptor? And by first year do you mean do we socialize with the first years or do we socialize in the first years?

🙂
Kristin

kristin--- they told me at my interview that they assign every first year an MSII to help with the adjustment into medical school. I am really excited about this as i met many 2006 students before i deferred to the class of 2007.

jhug,

I sent my first deposit installment recently. So when do they assign the first years a studeny mentor?

I am really excited to get to know some new people that I'll be in school with. I just cannot wait to get started. As you can see, patience is not one of my strong points. 🙄

Hope all is well with your new family. I bet your babies are growing like weeds.

Cyndi

The MS2 you will get will be called your big sister or brother. I think mentor is the term they use if you want to have a faculty mentor (used to be required but isn't anymore). The MS2s will look at the list of your names and where you are from and then choose you based on that.

That will happen in March or April.

Hello class of 2007- I finally made up my mind on where I would be next year and can't wait to join you all in the Valley of the Sun. I am in Boston now and it is cold as &*%$ so Glendale will be nice change of climate. Just wanted to say hello and can't wait to meet you all.

Cyndi-- i know what you mean about patience😀 i think that is why we had triplets😉 Are you thinking about the air force scholarship? Oh, and have you decided between azcom and uhs? i was stuck with that same decision so i can empathize with you.

Kristin-- thanks for clearing that up-- so as a big sis, did you actually do much with your little sibling?? I am really looking forward to this b/c i met a bunch of 2006'ers that i really, really get along with.

Congrats lycoidis-- what is that name anyway? a flower, a bug, or a gi condition??

jhug -
I've met with my little sis a few times and give her advice whenever she asks. I bet if you talk to some of the people you already know in the spring, they will choose you. Plus, since you're LDS (right?) and you guys always have a nose for each other, you'll probably get selected by somebody LDS. Just a guess... One of my friends already knew someone coming into the 2006 class and requested her from the people who make up the list (I forget if it's the student services people or the registrar).

🙂
kristin

lycoidis

Congrats on making your choice! Welcome!!!

Thanks for the warm welcome. Lycoidis is Greek for "pertaining to wolves". I have a little obssession with wolves as you might guess but you'll find that out soon enough. I am psyched to be with you all. Peace

lycoidis,
That's awesome! I too have a passion for wolves. My dog is a wolf mix (1/4 lobo)🙂

Hello all!

I'll be joining you in sunny Glendale in August. I'm moving down from Minnesota...it was 3 degrees here this morning...I don't think I'll mind the change of climate too much.

I'm really psyched about coming to AZCOM. My girlfriend will be transferring into ASU's graduate program in Architecture, and AZCOM was my first choice, so the situation couldn't be better. We are hoping to visit over x-mas break, but will probably be coming after the 1st of the year when everything is MUCH cheaper.

Additionally, I too am applying for the Air Force HPSP and am actually taking the medical exam this coming Monday. My recruiters refer to the physician as "Dr. Death," so it should make for an interesting experience.

Have any of you looked into the cost of renting a U haul or hiring a moving company for when you move? I've never moved more than 10 miles, so I'm wondering what the easiest way to do it entails.

Congrats to all, and I look forward to chatting with you!

burs0028,

Congratulations! What kind of tests did they perform at your Air Force HPSP physical? I am just curious b/c I am planning to apply for the scholarship too.

Lucky9999,

What other schools were you accepted to, if you dont mind me asking? What made u decide on AZCOM?

Fred

Has anyone here interviewed at PCOM? PCOM was my number 2 choice and they have offered me an interview and I am debating whether or not to go. The main reason why I want to go is to see what all the "hype" is about at PCOM. However, it is a pretty expensive experience considering I am dead set on going to AZCOM. Can anyone share their thoughts on PCOM in comparison to AZCOM? Thanks!

Fred

Hey everyone!

I also recently decided that I'll be attending AZCOM in the fall. I look forward to meeting all of you next year. It was a tough decision, but I felt I would ultimately be happiest in Arizona. After reading these posts, it almost seems as if everyone is married. Are there any single future AZCOMers out there? Anyone started looking for a roommate yet? Where are most of you going to be living? I really liked the on-campus apartments, but I haven't heard opinions from anyone that lives there. Well, congratulations to the rest of you on your acceptance! See you in the fall!

Yeah, I was starting wonder if I was the only single person going to AZCOM. I've started looking at some places but im still debating b/w living on campus or off. From what I hear, you can find the best bang for the buck off campus so that is where i've been looking. However, I am a single and I dont need that much space. But, the amount of space that they are offering for the price that they are asking is almost hard to pass up. I am not sure if im going to have a roommate my first year. I've had some bad roommate experiences in the past so i think that I am going to hold off until I actually meet some people face to face. Anyhow, I am really excited to start the next phase of my life and meet all of you. Take care...

Fred

without sounding too sappy, it is amazing to see so many different people coming together for a common goal-- i am really looking forward to seeing how we all compliment each other!

 Congrats to Biofreak126, Lucky9999, and Burs0028 on your decision. I recently made the jump so I know how great it feels to know for sure, without a doubt where you'll be. I think I am still int he afterglow. Can't wipe the smirk off my face.

It seems like we are going to have a great class, at least from what I've seen on SDN. Jhug your right it is amazing.

Question- Is anyone considering buying property rather then renting. Coming from Boston the price of a home in Glendale seems to good to be true. Fozzy- I'm not married so don't let the home talk fool you, but I talked with a friend who just graduated from Med school and he said his only regret was not buying a house or condo or whatever. It does make more sense to be putting money towrds a morgage rather then rent but I have no idea how to go about doing it. Just wondering if anyone else is considering owning as an option.

Jhug,

It's not sappy at all. That is one of the things that I loved about AZCOM. It seems as though they really wanted a diverse class. Im sure we all have stories to tell and I am excited to get to know you guys.

Fred

Well, I graduated from college in 2001. Then I worked in an upper extremity specialists clinic for one year. Now I am in Erie, PA at LECOM completing their post-bacc program. Anyone else care to share?

Fred

Hi everyone!

Congrats to all the new class 2007 members!

I graduated from ASU in 2000. I've been on active duty in the US Air Force as a med tech since then. For anyone considering buying a home in AZ, it really is a good investment. While in undergrad, I owned a very small home and profitted from its sale before enlisting in the AF. Surprise is a nice area. And if you look close enough, you should be able to fing a good deal in the Arrowhead area just to the west of the school.

Unfortunately, I do not think I'll be buying again though. Because I'll be an HPSP recipient, I don't think that I would even qualify for a VA loan now. But, if you can afford it- go for it. If anyone has specific questions about Glendale, feel free to ask. I lived in North Phoenix/Glendale about six years. My husband grew up in the area, so he may be more insightful than me. I look forward to meeting you all.

Cyndi

I too graduated in 2001. Following graduation I backpacked across Spain for a month on the El Camino de Santiago then around eastern Europe for three months. Came back to Boston and picked up where I left off doing Microarray research at Brigham and Women's, getting a little bored I have to admit. I am ready to move on. It is amazing how when your busy, as we will be next year, all you want is the opportunity to be bored and have nothing to do, then when your bored all you want is something to challenge you. Someday I'll find the balance.

I graduated Univ. of NV, Reno in May, 2002. I am now working as a Histology Technician in Reno and Per diem as an EMT.
I will likely be doing on campus housing at least until December. My fiance will graduate nursing school in Dec. 2003 and will be joining me then. We will likely rent a home, but if we find a catch we could look into buying.
We hope to go down for a few days in mid Jan or so toi scope out the area and let her see the school.

I'm still in school, will be done in April (as will my wife).

Is anyone considering living on campus? Has anyone heard any positives or negatives about living on campus? As trivial as it sounds, I would really like to have a washer and dryer unit in my apartment. It's just so much more convenient. From searching online, it seems that the units on campus that do have a washer and dryer are more expensive than comparable apartments off campus. Now im starting to babble. Anyhow, my main question was some where around the top...haha

Fred

I will graduate from ASU in may and work as a massage therapist in a chiropractic clinic part time. My wife and I will be buying a house in the glendale area.

Hi.

I am a future applicant and I was reading all of your thoughfull inputs and it seemed like most of you are married like someone pointed out earlier.

In class, were there many youngins?? I will be 23 when i enter med school and it would be very different to be with many peers that are 10+ years older.

thanx,
Ata

Hey Ata,

I am 23 right now in a post-baccalaureate program at LECOM. I'll admit, I was quite surprised to see that I am one of the youngest in my class if not THE youngest. You are right though that it is "different" from undergrad but in all honesty we all hang out with each other just the same. Most of my good friends out here are 27 and older (which by the way is not "old"...hope i didnt offend anyone...haha). I am still young at heart so it doesnt matter too much to me entering med school at 24.

Fred

Hey Ata and Fozzy,

I will also be 24 when I enter med school and I've also noticed that for DO schools it seems to be a trend that there are more older students with more varied life experiences that you would typically find at an MD school. I think that makes for a much more interesting dynamic than there would be if everyone was the same age and just finished undergrad. I'm really looking forward to attending classes and studying with such a diverse crowd. 😉

i am married, have three kids (triplets), and drive a mini-van--most guys in my case are mid-late 30's, slightly balding, and 25 lbs over-weight:laugh: (i'm totally joking) i'm 25 and in no way feel old, i'll finish a major in Spanish this spring- it's been put off for a year by a wife on bed-rest for 3 months and an endless stream of bottles and diapers! Right now i work in a charity clinic as an ma/phlebotomist/interpreter
Fozzy, did you apply to lecom's DO program or did you just need a change of scenery?

Jhug,

Yes I did apply to LECOM's DO program. However, I will not be attending their interview. These past couple months out here has definitely been eye opening. What I realized, within myself, is that weather definitely has affected my emotional state especially since Erie is cold and dreary a good chuck of the year. Fortunately, it hasnt affected my academic performance but I can't help but wonder what would happen to me once the pressure of medical school got to me. Therefore, I realized that a sunny medical school atmosphere is want I really needed. Also, the fact that AZCOM kicks butt!!! Based on these realizations, you guys have to deal with me for the next couple years...haha🙂

Fred

Fozzy: the military entrance physical was not nearly as bad as I was expecting. It was fairly straightforward, and I had no difficulties at all. The first thing you do is fill out more paperwork about any previous injuries or serious illnesses you've had, and then they start with the blood test (used mainly to test for HIV), a urinalysis (solely for marijuana and cocaine), vision and hearing tests, and lastly a one on one physical exam with a physician followed by group "exercises" where everybody stands around in their underware and performs basic movements like walking on your knees and moving your arms in circles while the docs look on.
Overall, it wasn't too bad.

As per the flow of conversation, I will be renting an apartment somewhere between AZCOM and ASU...probably in North Phoenix. If anyone is familiar with the area, I'd love it if I could get some suggestions of what neighborhoods are both safe and cheap. I too have recently graduated, and although I was working as a cardiac surgical research associate, the practice I worked for decided that "research" wasn't important, and canceled nearly all of our projects. I left in November thinking that I could easily find work elsewhere...afterall, I've got my degree right? 😉 No luck so far. I've have had a part time job working security for the U of MN since Feb., so I've just been picking up extra shifts--getting paid to read and play chess isn't bad, but I'd really rather be in an academic type of job. Anybody else feeling the squeeze of a tight job market?

Although I am married I just turned 25 and have no kids for now. So don't feel that all of us are sooo old like Jhug
😉 Just kidding!! By the way in my last post I meant to say that I work as a massage therapist in a chiropractic clinic now. When I reread my post it sounded like I was going to be working as a massage therapist, (not that any of you really care, but just to be correct). Hey Jhug, I also am graduating with a degree in spanish, so we can keep our spanish sharp talking to one another for the next few years.

Although I am married I just turned 25 and have no kids for now. So don't feel that all of us are sooo old like Jhug

hey, watch it!!!😛

Wow! It's been a good two years since I've even tried to speak spanish. I can't believe I still remember so much. The medical spanish elective was one of the things that attracted me to AZCOM so I'll definitely be taking it.

It's amazing that I can still understand what you guys are saying after 4 years of spanish....in high school!!!

Fred

just to toot our own horn-- i have a friend who just interviewed for residency placements and every single place she interviewed at (chicago, cal, florida, NY) was very impressed with the fact that she's bilingual and that the fact that she can see hispanic patients as well as english speaking is a big plus in her favor.
In the clinic where i work now 90% of our patients are spanish speaking and this is definately something i want to continue to do as a physician.

(p.s. is it not possible to do accent marks and upside down question marks on here? If you guys figure it out, avisenme!)

Rob

Yes you can put the accents in as well as others. There may be another way, but I just use the ASCII codes for them. I have a list next to my computer that I've been using since high school for spanish compositions. Here's my list:

Hold down the ALT key and use the numbers on the keypad on the right of the keyboard.

?=Alt 0193
?=Alt 0201
?=Alt 0205
?=Alt 0211
?=Alt 0218

?=Alt 0225
?=Alt 0233
?=Alt 0237
?=Alt 0243
?=Alt 0250

?=Alt 0252
?=Alt 0241

?=Alt 0161
?=Alt 0191

I think that's all of them.

On another note, did anyone else get the greeting card from AZCOM in the mail? I thought that was real classy. Just more proof that I've made the right decision. 🙂 🙂 🙂

I am a 4th year student at AZCOM living in a 2 bedroom 1.5 bath, 1050 sqft townhome networked and with high speed cable access (3mb) about 2.4 miles from campus and will be placing my place up for sale beginning in January preparing for graduation. If anyone is interested please please email me at [email protected] or if you have anyother questions about anything.
Also for all you heading to azcom in case you did not know we have a student web site and http://www.azcomstudents.org and a new established Sigma Sigma Phi Society (The osteopathic equiv of AOA Honor Society for your buddies headed to MD schools) If you want to get a taste of our e abilities check out mwunet.midwestern.edu another cool site too

Hi all!

I didn't know this was here, or I would have joined a while ago. It is kind of nice to "get to know" some of my future, fellow classmates.

I am from Chicago, IL (the burbs) and I graduated from Marquette University (in Wisoconsin) with a biology degree (the usual). Is there anyone else from the midwest? I will be 24 when I begin school and am single too (like a few of you others). I think I plan to live on campus, at least my first year. Now it is just a matter of filling out that form and sending it in.

I can't remember all the topics you guys already discussed. As for the one I remember, I am pretty sure I want to go into Invasive Cardiology (Internal and then Cardio fellowship). I don't think anyone else was interested in that area, that I remember.

Anyway, I wanted to say Hi and Congrats to everyone. I'll try to keep in touch, now that I know this exists.

See you all in August,
Matt

Matt:

Good to see another Midwestern midwesterner! I'm from the South Bend area (Notre Dame '00) and took postbac at Loyola.

I imagine there's an artificially low number of midwestern students going to Glendale due to the CCOM factor. I was very impressed by Arizona, though, and actually had an admissions rep at another osteopathic school spend almost as much time singing the praises of Arizona as her own school.

It'll definitely be a bit of a shift going from Chicago to Phoenix, but it's good to see that there are others making the long drive!

-Luke

Congratulations and welcome guys! Did any of you guys interview at CCOM? I was wondering how it compared to AZCOM. I have a friend who goes there and absolutely loves it. She also says that she hears great things about AZCOM. Take care🙂

Fred

hey all,
Does anyone remember during the financial aid presentation, the mention of a scholorship for AZ residents that any student at AZCOM would be eligible for after a year of school? I looked though the handouts that we got that day and I couln't find it in my "stack O' papers". I know that there was a commitment to practice in AZ for a certain amount of time. Does anyone recall if there was a restriction to the types of med. on could specialize in (like the NHSC)/the amount of the scholorship?? I was trying to explain it to my fiance, but I ran a blank

So, I heard a rumor that AZCOM was stopping interviews til the spring? Anyone know if this is true? AZCOM is my first choice, but I cant turn down these other schools just cause I'm waiting for them... any advice? Does anyone know how many people are already accepted to AZCOM? Do I still stand a chance? Any input would be great!

mtu:

When I was scheduling my interview, the admissions officer said that November 8 was the last day that they were interviewing before April. (I thus ended up as presumably the last interview on the last day of the semester....interesting experience.)

On the plus side, it seems as if AZCOM accepts the vast majority of the people it interviews. An admin. conversationally mentioned a 75% figure. The overall rate, before interviews, is a few points shy of 20%.

According to US News, about a fifth of applicants were interviewed. 368 out of 403 were accepted, but 277 out of 278 out-of-staters were accepted. These are older stats (2001) but I'd guess that if you're interviewed, your odds of being accepted are very high, spring interview or otherwise.

Of course, with the short leashes that osteopathic schools keep on those they've accepted, I imagine that you'll have to put down deposits on the other schools before that in order to hold your place. I think that most schools refund up to 40% if you choose another school, though, so if some of your other acceptances have staggered deposits perhaps it's possible for you to still get that AZCOM acceptance without having plunked too much down on other schools.

Good luck!

-Luke

Hey Luke!

I'm glad to see that not just a fellow "midwesterner" will be at AZCOM, but also a fellow Catholic school grad.

I think you are right about the low numbers of people from our area going to Arizona due to CCOM. However, among all the other good things about AZCOM, the thought of not having to warm-up my car during subzero weather is reason enough to pack my bags!

I hope everyone has a happy holiday.

Matt

Nope, we'll all just have to in heat so intense it seems to melt the steering wheel. 🙂

Congrats on your acceptances. Glad to see a lot more AZCOMites coming out of the woodwork.

Hey San!

Thanks. Congrats to you too (and everyone else here).

As for the heat, its a "dry" heat, so its all good ;o)

Since we are getting to know one another, are any of you big boxing fans? I am a HUGE boxing fan and I just read that there is a big fight the near the beginning of school. At that point, i'll should probably be studying but the fight will be my study break...haha
