Lots to say, but won't bore everyone with the details of my trip. However, I did learn a few things that I think some of you might like to know:

-Academic calendars are available in the registrar's office, but are not available online. They are quite detailed, but are for 02-03 only. I asked when schedules for next year might be ready, and was told they are working on it, but have no idea when they will be available. The calendar I picked up includes info on orientation dates, major exams, & holiday breaks. PM me and I'll happily email you a copy.

-I also obtained a list detailing the current curriculum including the classes we will be taking and the "contact hours" each one requires. I'll email this as well.

-As many of us have noted, apartments are available everywhere in Phoenix, but for those of you not planning on living immediately adjacent to AZCOM, pay attention: I have been looking at places online in the area around Peoria and Dunlap near I-17, but I found out that this is not the best place to live. According to the staff in the Student Services office, although the rent is very affordable and the complexes may seem nice, it is a very high crime area. Evidently, thieves love this location for easy access to valuables and a quick getaway via the freeway. I drove through the area and although some of the complexes look nice, the surrounding community is not nearly as appealing. I was told to look instead at residences along the 101 loop toward the Northeast side of town. I will probably end up getting a place in Scottsdale since my girlfriend will be attending ASU-east, but I did drive along the 101 near Tatum and Cave Creek(?) and saw lots of shopping centers and entertainment venues near several nice looking apartment villages. ForRent.com is supposed to be a good source for rental info in this area...I'll keep you posted.

burs--i pm'd you!

just a response to jhug's earlier question about azstudents.org. The website was the idea of one of the former AZCOM presidents of COSGP (Class of 2001) and was put together and maintained by a classmate of mine. Would be a great idea if someone kept it running. Hope things are going great for you, your wife and the triplets!

Hey all,

I've started work on the website, and though there's not much up, the AZCOM 2007 MESSAGE BOARD is up and running.

It's pretty similar to the studentdoctor boards, so the learning curve will be minimal. It has a few neat features that should help build the community. For example, if you put your AIM username down when you register, someone can PM you directly by clicking on a link in your messages.

It's still pretty rough. Right now I'm hosting it under my domain, but hopefully as the year progresses we can move it to a new domain. I'll continue to add new features as they're recommended. It would be great if we could somehow notify the class of it before school starts so that people could coordinate roommates and introduce themselves. Would anyone have the time/access to talk to the administration about this?

On an unrelated note: Does anybody know when the second deposit is due? I lost my orange coupons!

-Luke

LAW...you ROCK!

I think that the next deposit ($750.00) is due by the 28th of Feb. I haven't really looked at my coupons either.

Luke,

The next deposit is due on Feb. 28th in the amount of $750.00.

I am not very informed about the difference between a Palm Pilot and a Pocket PC. I am thinking about getting one of the two for school this fall. Can anyone offer any advice as to which one is the best and would be most aplicable for us as med. students? Also, does anyone know if a laptop will be a tremendously valuable resorce for med. school?

Thanks for the info.

Kevin🙂

Thanks for the deposit info!

koth: I've heard that Palm is the standard right now for many of the med applications....there are a few studentdoctor threads on it in the clinical rotations/residency sections.

Dell sometimes gives cheap palm pilots away with new laptops, so if you do buy a laptop you might be able to kill two birds. I'm looking forward to using the laptop as a study accessory....I'll have all the notes and tests on it (and lectures, if we get this recording thing going!) so that if I'm studying in multiple locations I don't need to worry about what to bring. I don't know if AZCOM has a wireless network, but that would be another big plus in favor of a laptop.

-Luke

i have an ipaq (pocketpc) and LOVE it!! the screen is big, it has handwriting recognition so i don't have to learn a new way of writing, and the picture is great. It really is a small laptop-it has ms word, powerpoint, & excell. I can show patients at my clinic detailed anatomy pics when explaining about different conditions/anatomy and they look just like the pics on my desktop! The exchange between my ipaq and desktop is practically nothing b/c i can start something in word at home and finish it on the road. For class, i might get a keyboard attachment and just use the two-- they both fit easily into a coat pocket! Palm software is everywhere b/c it has been around much longer. Pocket PC software isn't has readily available but with a little searching you can find it. I got my ipaq at compaqfactoryoutlet.com. They are refurbished and MUCH cheaper! every now and then they'll have clearance sales and that is when you can really get a great deal.

Tedsadoc-- i hope all is well in the great state of NY. The kids are growing like weeds and keeping us both happy and tired. You know, i sincerely hope one day to work with you!! Take care and keep in touch!

b-4 u drop $300 on a new pda know that they aren't very useful for the 1st/ 2nd year outside of what a pda is usually used for eg calander, games, phone #'s etc. i recommend waiting untill your 3rd year when they are a must and buying one then. if you buy one now by the time the 3rd year rolls around it will be terribly out-dated.
lap tops aren't necessary either but they can be useful depending on how you use it. it makes it very easy for the group projects we have to do, provided you have powerpoint installed. other than copying a few cd-roms i've never used mine.

Kothkg,

I live in Avondale (your neighbor to the south) around Dysart and Indian School and I think it's a great area. I have never had problems with noise from Luke AFB which is about 5 miles north. Just wanted to let you know from someone in the area. Good luck and congrats on your new home!! 😀

Nurse81

Hey thank you for the info about the area. I was just down there and signed the paperwork for the house. It sould be finished in the middle of July if not a little sooner. I am living in the Dreaming Summit develpoment. Maybe we should talk about carpooling to school since we are living so close together. Anyway, thanks for the information.

Hey all,
You guys just saved my butt. I'm an MS3/4, out-of-state for a rotation, and I needed to log in to AZCOM's Medical Education site. I don't have my computer with me, and I forgot to copy my favorites list. So I had no way to get the web address immediately, without waiting for a reply. One of you put the student page address on here, though, and I found it on Google. That page had what I needed!
So, I owe you.
Any questions you think I might be able to answer, let 'em rip.
I do think they are planning to allow some pets into a couple of the apt buildings next year.
Peace,
Tom Seck
MS3-OMM Fellow

Hi again,

I just got a message from one of your compatriots about being an OMM fellows, so I'm sharing my response with all of you, evn though you have a couple years before most of you will think about it..

Benefits of being an OMM Fellow:

Note: I actually did my fellowship at UHS-COM due to strange circumstances. Theirs is a one year fellowship between MS2 and MS3.

Actually, AZCOM offers a 3 year fellowship, intertwined with your 3rd and 4th year, adding a 5th. You apply for it in your 2nd year. They take 2 students, and usually have about 10 applicants.
The fellowship involves adding about 12 months of specifically OMM rotations, while at the same time teaching every Wednesday that you are in town, and doing lots of treatments at the clinic.
Benefits:
Experience treating patients with real problems
This is much more beneficial than treating your classmates
Your patients can help you out, too, if you develop a relationship with them.

You only have to pay for 2 years of med school
Since most doctors only feel free to practice after their loans are paid off, and it takes about 4 years per year borrowed, even though you add a year of school, you save 8 in paying off loans.

You get a monthly stipend, and you get lots of free seminars, books, convocation, courses, meals, etc...

You make a lot of friends in the upper echelon of osteopathy.
This is very handy when trying to set up rotations, residencies, etc.

You get to teach, and get to know 3 more classes of students. This is very helpful in later years when you need contacts n different parts of the country, or in different specialties.

Finally, by working with lots of different osteopaths, you learn a lot of different ways to treat the same problem. Since all patients are different, you'll learn you need at least 3 ways to treat any problem, since every patient will respond differently. It's like having multiple antibiotics in the medicine cabinet. If the penicillin doesn't work, grap a macrolide, and if that doesn't work, throw a quinolone at it.

Time to run.
Clinic calls.
Peace,
Tom

Hey all,

I emailed the administration about the website/message board, etc, and am posting the reply that I got. To summarize, it looks like the university itself is going to be adding a passel of new fatures. I'm guessing notes and quizzes won't be a part of that, so I imagine we'll still need to work on the website, but not nearly as much as had been anticipated. It'll be great to have a message board that all incoming students know about.

The most important detail of the email seems to be that if you haven't yet, you should sign up for email updates from the Midwestern Website.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Luke:
Thanks for your note about the AZCOM class of 2007 web site. I wanted to let
you know that we are in the final stages of adding some additional
interactive features to the www.midwestern.edu web site. These will include
the ability for applicants/students to create personal profiles, search
other profiles, add links and dates, email admissions counselors,
participate in message boards on various topics, link to other university
news and events, complete their financial aid application on-line, etc, etc.
We are in the final testing phase, and I hope that these features will go
"live" on our web site by the end of this month. When they do, it might be
easier and more effective (in terms of numbers of participants, etc) for you
to use the message boards on the university web site. I know you have
already done a lot of work on your web site, but before you do any more, I
wanted to let you know what the university has planned. Our goals are
exactly the same as yours---to provide an easy and effective way for you to
connect with your future classmates and colleagues at MWU.

If you are subscribed to the email newsletters via the MWU web site, we will
send you a notice when these features become available. Thanks again and we
look forward to seeing you this fall.

Just got a letter form AZCOM today. In it was my school email address. Pretty cool! Anyone else get their's??

bla- That's pretty cool. I haven't gotten mine yet and was wondering if they also give you a username and password to get onto the Midwestern Intranet?

lycoidis...I got the same letter bla_3x did. They do give you a username and password and also tell you that mail is kept for 60 days on the server and then deleted, and you get 25MB of space.

Got the same letter! I feel like an official student now!!! I talked to Jose in housing yesterday and he said that they are adjusting the prices for the apartments. Has anyone heard if it's going to be cheaper?

Fred

Will they be sending us an update on the changes for housing?

Yeah, he said that once they have "adjusted" the prices they will send out new housing applications and information. This won't be until March though.

Fred

Should we just hold on to the housing applications they sent before?

I guess it would be a waste of time to send both of them.

No letter yet🙁

Last year they said they were going to adjust the prices and they ended up cutting the extras and upping the $$$-- hopefully they don't do that again-- i am really interested in the on-campus housing!!

Does anyone think that it is too early to start applying for apartments yet? I talked with a lady at highlands who suggested doing it asap, i just feel that a lot has to happen before we know where we are going to live.

I would probably just wait for the new housing application. I would really like to live on campus if the price is right, especially for the first year. But, if they raise the prices I am definitely going to go off campus.

Jhug, I don't think that it is too soon to be looking for apartments. I am actually trying to fly out there pretty soon and take a look at some of the apartment complexes.

Fred

i am actually gonna be on campus, but only until December (Whenever that quarter ends) because my fiance' will be joining me and she will be bringing our cats. I am not looking forward to living in a studio by myself...but hey it might be advantageous to my grades. I was hoping to spend some of the first quarter weekends scoping out houses in the vicinity. My fiance will be staring as a nurse (BSN) right out of school, and I'll be on loans so I am fearful that we may not be finacially able to do a house (rent or buy). We were looking at area hospitals and not many are giving out nice sign on bonuses for nurses🙁 But, we shall see. I am trying to stay away from apratments because I REALLY miss my dog that has had to live with my folks as I now live in an apartment.

bla_3x- check out La Palma apt at central and bell rd. they have no limit on pets.

the apts across from the school allow pets, as well.

Nothin really important, just wanted to help keep our thread on the first page😀

Got the MWU newspaper today. Pretty cool, I feel more and more like a student each day. 🙂

Did they send the MWU newspaper to you automatically or did you have to subscribe?

Fred

nothing really relevant...

i just completed my first acls course yesterday. it was quite challenging and enjoyable- except i broke the tooth on my simulated patient during intubation.

i would recommend this course to anyone. hope all is going great.

cyndi🙂

Do we all become ACLS certified during our first year, or would this be a godo thing to have done before we arrive in the fall? I know I have Healthcare Provider certification.

As a part of my EMT-Int. course I have the option of taking the ACLS (I guess it's only required for the paramedics), but I am gonna take it. It can only help, and I have heard that it is a fun course.

ACLS is required spring quarter second year. It definately can't hurt if you take it now, especially if you are familiar with EKG's and cardiac drugs! I would not say it is required or something you have to do before hand. First year BCLS is required (usually offered on a Saturday spring quarter) or you can submit a current card.

I don't "think" I subscribed. I was on the email listserve for the newsletter, but that's all.

man, now i'm feeling really left out! 🙂 Is anyone else applying for the NHSC scholarship?? i was very suprised/slightly dissapointed by the application.

Here is some advice if you are applying for the NHSC scholarship. (I applied and didn't get it and realized one of my biggest mistakes retrospectively.) Say you are interested in RURAL medicine, even if you aren't. I am generally a very very honest person, but this is a very important thing to stress in the interview and your application. Most of their spots are rural. There are bunches of urban positions that don't get filled (as well as Indian Health Service positions), so you can always fulfill your requirement at an urban place, but TELL THEM RURAL!!!

(In retrospect, I think it's good I didn't get it because now I am thinking of specializing. That's why I didn't reapply.)

🙂
Good luck all

I got the scholorship pack and I am really doubting the whole thing. I mean, I really don't know if I can commit myself to a practice/field yet. I think that I am gonna one of those who doesn't know what the heck he's gonna do til the end of 3rd year, at least I hope I know by then.

Anyone get the email from Tammy Schmidt RE the scholorship page on the AZCOM website? I thought that in the financial aid presentation during the interview there was mention of a scholorship for AZ residents (which we could qualify for after first year) that has a commitment to stay in AZ for x years post residency regarless of specialty. I saw the Indian and Tuson ones, but was I missing the other one, or am I just smoking crack??😕 I could have sworn that there was mention of a scholorship like that....I even took nothes on the subject.

kris-- i went over the application before sending it and was tempted to change stuff to make myself look better-- and i guess that is what bothers me. I have worked in a charity clinic for 3 years and have a real interest in serving in an underserved area, i just don't feel the application cares about that. All they want is for you to tell them exactly what they want to hear. Oh well, if it is meant to happen it will🙂

Does anyone have an idea on the best mobile company to go with in Phoenix? I imagine they all work wonderfully in the city, but is there one company or another that does particularly well in the more rural areas?

Sprint PCS....seems to work all over the state (good on rural rotations).

Stay away from Qwest (who I have)....service sucks--customer service sucks.

I second Boomer's advice about Qwest. I have Qwest local phone service here in MN and they constantly overcharge. Everytime I think I've got their mess straightened out, I get a new bill listing services I neither want or use. If given a choice, I'll never use Qwest again.

What are the options for regular phone service in Phoenix? How about cable/internet? I've heard that "Cox Cable?" is the way to go...anybody know their rates?

When I lived in Phoenix 3 years ago, I used Qwest DSL for phone, cable and internet. I had great service, and the price was reasonable. But that was a while ago.

we have this great deal with at&t. As long as we are in selected yellow areas (phoenix is one, salt lake and a bunch of places between as well) we are able to call anywhere in the US (hawaii included)!! my wife's fam is in cali, St Luois, hawaii, my fam is in utah, iowa, and cali-- we can talk to all of them w/o ever worrying about long-distance charges. We are interested in the cable/high speed internet as well-- any suggestions?

I'm so glad to be rid of that annoying monkey!!!!!

Just out of curiosity, where is everyone from?

Fred

Thanks for the phone service responses everyone! Having cable and internet included with the on-campus housing seems fantastic. I'm hoping that they get rid of the requirement for a land-line phone soon.

There was a bit of PDA discussion earlier in the thread. Amazon is offering a combination color PDA/cell phone for $250 after rebates with a one-year commitment to Sprint. For those considering new cell phones and a new PDA, it might be a good way to kill two birds since Sprint seems to be highly rated among the forum mebers.
