If anyone is interested in going on a EUROTRIP this summer let me know - a couple ppl in our incoming class are thinking of going!!😛

I would but I'm too poor and too married. haha I guess those things go hand-in-hand. Wouldn't trade her for the world though.

You kids have fun!

That sounds exciting. What is planned?

Couple of questions for those of you who have already done the Stafford Loan Application.

I found it interesting that the website asks about employer information. My two concerns are as follows:

1. I won't be employed while in medical school so I wonder what they are asking this for.

2. Frankly, I'm not really planning on telling my employer I'm leaving for medical school for another few months.

Does SallieMae contact employers in order to verify employment status? I thought this was very interesting because so many full-time students aren't employed, and yet these questions were marked as "required" on the application.

Any advice/help you can give me is appreciated!

We are planning on going on a 35-Day Europtrip to all of these places:
Nice
Tyrol Region
Corfu
Barcelona
Paris
Brussels
Amsterdam
Heidelberg
Prague
Munich
Venice
Florence
Rome
Athens

We are going through a college-break agency that is specifically for (18-26 year olds) You pay them once and they book your plane tickets all your hotels, and all of your travel arrangements throughout europe. They also take you on guided tours and give you free days in each city - as well as show you around all the night life. A couple of us agreed on this because it seems like the most stress-free way to do europe and one of the girls in our class (stephanie) has traveled with this agency before and loved it!

So anyway I called the agency to talk about the trip and just ask some general questions and after talking for a while with the manager he offered me a job! Yay - so now I'm working for them and kind of have to talk them up..but I wanted you to know I really liked the way the job sounded before the guy offered me a job 🙂

Please ask anymore questions! I hope you will come with us!!!!

Ditto. Plus I have two toddlers and that just ain't happening. Plus I'm 29 so I guess I would be out anyway. That sounds like an awesome trip though!

Oh my gosh cool! That is so amazing that you're planning a eurotrip through collegebreak because I was totally looking at the same thing! At this point, I'm not sure I'll be in the class of '12 because I interview on March 3rd. I've already put down my refundable deposit at TUCOM-NV, but I still have three interviews left (Western, AZCOM, SOMA). I was REALLLLY hoping to do a eurotrip this summer through collegebreak, but my parents were trying to convince me to wait until next summer after first year of med school. That way, I could plan it with a group from the school. But, now that you have planned this trip, I think it would be awesome to do it with other class of '12 students. How many people do you have planning/wanting to go? Also, which trip and when were you thinking? When do you have to have the money by?

Good Luck on your interview! So far 4 or 5 people have shown interest! We would be going on the 35-Day Ultimate Europe trip. You have to have the money 99 days (~3months) before the trip. So for the june 21st trip pay by march 14th which is coming up pretty soon!!! However if you sign up later its a $95 late fee wich isnt that big of a deal. Let me know if you want to go so I can give you the promotion code to put on your application! -Liz

I'm hoping both of us will be in the class of 2012 so you'll have to bring pictures from your trip so I can drool over them and feel jealous. 😉 Actually if my husband and I are both on the quarter system next year (i.e. I get accepted) we would like to take a trip to Hawaii for a week during fall break, babies and all. 😀

My wife is always hinting to me that she wants to take another trip to Hawaii. We went to Maui on our honeymoon (in 2005) and LOVED IT!

Personally I'm pushing for a trip to the Dominican Republic but she isn't crazy about the whole dirty water/third world country thing.

I'm totally with your wife on that one! If she is a supportive wife and willing to do what it takes for you to go to med school and become a doctor then I think she deserves another trip to Hawaii. You can tell her I said so too. 😉 We actually went to Oahu for our honeymoon in 2002 and we loved it there. We would like to go to Maui eventually but there's a lot of stuff the kids would love in and around Honolulu and that I love too. Where did you stay in Maui?

Oh gosh umm... It was some hotel in Kaanapali right on the beach. I don't remember the name of it. We booked it through like travelocity or orbitz or one of those. It was a lot of fun. I'd totally do it again.

Wow that sounds so awesome, I'm jealous. I spent a semester in London and did a 3-week eurotrip with my college roomie, so I've been to all of the cities on that list with the exception of the first 3 and Athens. We had a blast though so let me know if you have questions about any of those places

My husband and I loved Kanapali. We went there for our honeymoon as well and stayed two nights at Kanapali Beach Hotel after 5 days in Molokai. Definitely planning on going back at some point in medical school! Tickets will at least be cheaper than coming all the way from OH.

Hello class of 2012, I am a third year student at AZCOM and I would be happy to answer any questions you might have about the program or med school in general. There are so many things I wish I had known about before I started my first year. The first two years are grueling and painful, but you come out very well prepared for the step 1 boards (COMLEX and USMLE). Since I'm almost done setting up my 4th year rotations I can also give you some insight on your clinical years. Feel free to PM me or shoot me an e-mail at [email protected]. Best of luck!

I guess I have just a couple general questions:

As far as rotations available (in the phoenix/glendale area) do you feel that there is an adequate amount of diversity as far as programs and rotation types?

Would you go to AZCOM again if you had to make the decision again?

So I just accepted midwestern's offer, unless I get off the waitlist at half price state u then I will be leaving the lone star state and big d for sunny arizona...

Congrats!! I will be moving from DFW to AZ too. I also just interviewed at AZCOM with a guy from Fort Worth.

Thats a good question, I would say YES! But it really depends on what you believe is important in a medical school - if you ask some specific questions I'd be happy to do my best to answer from what I know - and I'm sure other posters would too!

The HUGE selling points for me were: New facilities, amazing weather, faculty dedicated to their students, an almost 100% board passing rate with an average score 7 points above the national median, and crazy-good residency matches if you are looking to go into a specialty!!! In my opinion this is the best D.O. school behind MSUCOM (i go to msu and it is 0° here)

Hope that helps a little!!😍 Liz
Haha...you sound like you are already working for the PR staff. San Lagos is nice, btw, and my buds that have roommates all seemed to have worked out fine...and they are paying half the money. Then again, I opted to get my own place, and that is working out well too, albeit at a cheaper place where I could afford to live by myself.

Hey, I'm a MS1 from Dallas and don't let anyone fool you....the heat is WAYYYYY worse than Texas. People kept telling me "it's a dry heat" but don't let that fool you, make sure you make arrangements to move at night. The heat in August puts Texas to shame 🙁

I ask b/c i have a depost due for another school and won't want to loose money that i already dont have!!

I called and found out 13 days after my interview. I would say wait ~2 weeks and then call.

My "Interact now" account didn't change colors for another week or so after that.

lalalalalalala I can't hear you lalalalalalalalala :meanie:

It will be hard waiting that long but hopefully midterms will keep me distracted. I might be nervous to call though since last time I called to check my status I was on the preinterview waitlist. :scared:

Thats a long timee!!!
I think i'll just try calling!

All those accpeted...do you guys know why the tuition is so high?!! Like most or few ( don't know) I would be paying for my own medical education and living !! Is the tuition a factor for anyone else?!?

My understanding of why tuition is so high is that the school is really expanding right now. There is a lot of construction going on with numerous new buildings and improvements.

Also they are starting the dental program this year too.

Since it is a private school (like most DO schools) the funding has to come from somewhere. At least you can see from the construction where it is going though.

They told us at my interview that tuition would increase every year.

Good news is the cost of living in that area isn't very high. Most of us will be in the same boat as you as far as not having anyone else foot the bill for our education. We'll all be paying off our loans for many years.

The expansion in Glendale is being funded by money that Midwestern had from selling its hospital in Chicago a few years ago, and from other funding sources. Student tuition is only part of the equation. Each year's class up until now paid about $6 million (150 x $40,000). Multiply that by 10 (generously) to include four years of medical school plus pods and other health majors and it's still well under the amount they are pouring into this construction project, which I believe is over $100 million.

Osteopathic schools tend to be expensive because they get less public funding than many MD schools which tend to get more research grants and are associated with hospitals. State governments will pour millions into public medical schools, and the private ones have endowments and research grants. The osteopathic schools for many decades were kept out of urban medical centers and had to open their own osteopathic hospitals or else work with rural clinics. The picture is changing today. Note that some private MD schools are quite expensive as well. I know that Tufts is around $48K, and in a very expensive city to live in (Boston).

Hey I just wanted to let you guys know that the Eurotrip we are planning on going on has a deadline for signing up that is coming up shortly! We really want as much of the AZCOM class of 2012 to go as possible! So let me know if you have any questions or want more info!!! -Liz😍

Looks like they changed to view of their construction webcam.

That link I posted earlier no longer looks at the Dental School building. Now we have a view of the construction of the auditorium. Check it out.

I will preface this post by saying that I am ridiculously nervous awaiting the decision from AZCOM!!

I interviewed on 2/28 and I was told that the admissions committee met today (Friday, 3/7) to make a decision. How long after the admissions committee met did you guys find out? Did you get a letter, a call, email? Did you log into "interact now" and find out?

Wow, i know I must sound like a complete bozo!! I am not normally a flake, but as you all know, this is a stressful period. Any advice on my questions would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello all! I got my acceptance email this past Friday (I literally jumped so high I hit my elbow on the roof as I made a whooping sound rivaling that from a rabid baboon) and since have starting plotting my crosscountry move.
Question: regarding housing--where do we look for a list of students looking to get room mates? Also, I know traffic can be brutal down there--how many blocks from campus can one live and still get there in under 15 minutes? Finally, if one lives a bit further away and must drive, how much does it cost to get parking on campus? I have heard some places are ridiculous like 2000 dollars a year, how much is AZCOM?
Thanks!

I can't wait to move to AZ where they don't switch the clocks on you 2x a year. I hate it when my sleeping schedule gets messed with.

/end rant

SO all my fretting paid off! Called AZCOM this morning and got the great news!!! I am proud to be part of the class of 2012!!!

Hey newbies,
Welcome to the "in-crowd." I am a first-year AZCOM student but will be doing an extended study program (i.e. I will be doing the pre-clinical work in three years instead of two). So I guess, technically, I am in the class of 2012 when all is said and done. I'll be taking one class per quarter with you guys next year, and some second-year classes with the 2011ers, so I'll get the best of both worlds. 🙂

You are coming to AZCOM at a very interesting time - one of massive growth and restructuring. If you need any words of encouragement or advice, or you need to find a good sushi restaurant, shoot me a PM or just ask here.

...so where are u guys living?? I don't think i'll get oncampus housing..I looked at San lagos (online)..looks really nice but kinda expensive!
what are the other place you all have heard of?!

anyone from Michigan?!

HI Slim, EEL, sunshine, and woobadger! Thanks for the congrats. The same to you!

EEL, nice to know someone else from the metroplex will be with me in AZ. I am originally from Maine (lived and went to college there). Gonna be a much different climate than Maine. It will be sad to leave Dallas, but I am going on to bigger and better things.

I interviewed on Thursday, Feb. 28th. Anyone else interview on this day? There were 17 of us there on that day.

DioNic, I was at work (in a law firm, ironically) so I could not make any loud, baboon-ish noises, but I sure felt like it 🙂

I called and found out about my acceptance. Did you guys get something in the mail??

Oh yeah, I am on facebook now---I am the profile with the picture of the Pug in a lifejacket.
