AZCOM Discussion thread 2007-2008

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I interviewed at six schools and my two favorites were AZCOM and WVSOM both for the physical plant and the curriculum. In fact my top choice would have been WVSOM but the wife is a city girl and doesn't want to live in a small town, and also WVSOM is muy expensivo. I don't regret choosing AZCOM, though. It's a gorgeous campus, with the mountains on the horizon and a vast city to the south, and they're improving the campus by leaps and bounds. When the fall classes begin, there will be lots of nice new facilities on a campus that was already new and modern.

I've read the negative threads on AZCOM and I would say that the best thing is to do your research thoroughly and understand what you're getting for your money. AZCOM has its own way of doing things that may or may not be best for each student, and it's up to you to do your due diligence. The weekly exams are a grueling routine that makes you feel as though you're scrambling all the time, but it spreads the pain out instead of concentrating it at the end of 4 week blocks. The 3rd year rotations are variable but they're working on improving them. The faculty is top notch, they're enthusiastic about their work and they really care about the students. They have open office hours--you can drop by any time. It's a cheap place to live and there are lots of job opportunities for spouses, lots of eateries, and great weather 8 months out of the year.

Anyway, best of luck on your MCATs and maybe we'll see you around campus in the fall 🙂
thanks, i appreciate the due diligence point. however, their website doesn't hold a ton of info. i think i've learned more about prospective schools in the last couple of days than in the last six months. what is a good resource? other than the threads? does azcom have an undergrad OMM fellowship? and how are they with diversity? I am a white sikh by religion. as such, i have a beard and turban. when i walked into the interview in yakima, wa. you could hear jaws hitting the floor. it was quite humerous.

DOC KHALSA,

I am going to be going to AZCOM next year...so I cant attest specifically for the school - but I am from Michigan and AZCOM is "Midwestern U" and as I understand from visiting and my brother living there Arizona and Phoenix (being a big city) has a Midwestern mentality... which, from my experience, is really open to diversity. I know some smaller D.O. schools out in hick-town USA might react awkwardly but my assumptions would lead me to believe AZCOM wouldnt be (if they are..then i might be going to the wrong school) I just cant imagine any jaws hitting the floor, but then again i am from michigan state where we have 40+thousand students and a VERY diverse population so I have friends from every nation/religion/culture you could think of!

That being said...can someone AT AZCOM currently respond to this post because I am very interested in hearing the answer to the diversity question aslo!!!

first of all. GO BLUE!! i hope you are not sensitive to that....having said that, thanks for your perspective. at school procastinating my organic exam tonight so i will respond more later. now i have to focus. by the way, why didn't you go to MSUCOM?

I interviewed the last week of november and was accepted early december and will be attending this upcoming fall. I was wondering, when i was there in november the campus was very messy with construction, and i was curious as to how that was coming along?

I resent that😡 Where do you go to undergrad? I hope not UofM!!!!!

GO GREEN!😀

Anyway..I was put on MSUCOMs waiting list (but even if I get off of it I would choose AZCOM, AZCOM is a great school and I am WAY over this snow - despite the price tag!) I have an interview at MSUCHM this coming Tuesday... I am not sure whether or not I would want to go there though...I am about 80% sure I will end up at AZCOM..I am also on the waitlist for UofM😛 If I am accepted there I will have to go - but I was told their waitlist doesn't move much! Anyway good luck on your exam!

Doc. K,

I am a first year at MWU as well, there is a undergrad OMM fellowship. There are 4 new spots available each year. I am not sure how our class rates in diversity by comparison to other schools but I really don't think you would feel uncomfortable here. Glendale is a pretty busy and diverse city. As far as on campus, I think most people will be too consumed in their school work to pay much attention to our differences. It is also a very small school feel and whatever superficial assumptions people may make about you can only last so long because eventually everyone ends up knowing everyone.
Good luck.

Thanks to whoever just canceled their March 3rd interview! It definitely pays to keep calling them.

EEL, you'll have to post or PM me when you get done interviewing on Friday (Feb 29). I'll be so curious how it went since I'll be there on Monday!

Yay Dancer!! Not as great as if you would've gotten 2/29 but still great. 😉 I will definitely let you, and everyone else who is interested, how it goes. I think I might be stressed about it because for the past day or so my right eye has been twitching on and off. 😱

LOL-- Dancer, I think you and I must have AZCOM on speed dial We are headed out there for our interview TUESDAY (as in next week)!! Sure beats MAY 🙂

Screw it all. I loved KCUMB, but I hate cold weather. I just accepted and paid my matriculation fee for AZCOM!!! I'm so psyched! I'll see you all there in the summer/fall-ish. Anyone know of really cheap apartments?

ScTx:luck:

YAY! CONGRATS ON YOUR DECISION!!! I think most people live in San Lagos, San Pedro or Sagestone (they are all right across from campus - but i don't think they are very cheap)

Anyway make sure you go join our facebook group!!! http://msu.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9464526334

We are thinking of doing a group Eurotrip if you are interested!

Thanks. I'd love to go to Europe, but my current job may prohibit that. I'll be on a really limited income in med school, so I have to have a cheap place. It'll be okay. I think I can get some time off to go and look for a place. Let me know about the trip, and I'll check into it! Can't wait to be out of humidity!

See it is humid here!! Right before I moved here people told me it was a dry heat. They were wrong. 👎

To you mean TX, SC, or AZ?
TX: Eastern = VERY humid
SC= VERY humid

AZ, last time I was there the weather report said "27% humidity. It's getting sticky out there." They don't know sticky! Try 100% humidity - and it's not even RAINING! Ahhhh, South Carolina. I do love it here, but the summers are brutal with the humidity.

Basically I mean everywhere but the southwest. I'm in Texas now but I'm from Illinois and at least it isn't nearly as humid here as it is there. I lived in TN and IN too and those were pretty humid states as well.

 I practically had them on speed dial, since I was calling like twice a day. I felt so awkward to keep calling and bugging them, especially since I would always talk to the same person. I kept trying to sound a little bit different everytime I called so they wouldn't know it was me who kept calling. 😀 I even contemplated having one of my family members call for me LOL. They were really nice though. One time I called, I asked if there were a lot of others calling for interview openings, and they said yes! Then, I didn't feel so bad, and figured I wasn't the only one. It must have been krob and me most of the time though!

EEL, I totally feel your pain with the whole eye twitching thing. Probably a day or two before any of my interviews I get that! Then it will just go away. I remember though, the whole summer that I was studying for the MCAT, I had a CONSTANT eye twitch on my left eye. Talk about annoying!!!

I am so happy for you guys! Good luck at your interviews!!! I hope you love AZ!! Did you guys check out the interview question page? I can't remember if it is through SDN or through another site..

They asked me what type of kitchen appliance I would be, and some people were asked what they would do with a million dollars! They also asked about my best friend and what qualities about me she likes. All of the questions were really laid back - I was actually laughing during a lot of my interview so don't get too stressed!!!!!!!!

Does anyone have any info about how much of the class is filled at this point?

Those are some great questions! Hopefully I'll get some like that. I have to say that so far in this interview season, my favorite question I was asked was, "If you could be any kind of animal, what would you be, and why?"

Okay now you have to say what you said. I know I would be a dolphin. 😀

Oooo dolphin's a good one! It basically took me a nanosecond to answer that question (once I laughed and said how much I loved that question). I immediately said that I would be a dog! Because they're happy and fun and loving, they always bring a sense of levity with them, plus their tails are always wagging! Apparently it was a good answer because I ended up with compliments and everyone in that room was laughing. I mean, who doesn't like dogs?

Haha I remember you telling us that after we all came out of our interviews that day, clearly they liked your answer since you were accepted! Good luck at AZCOM 🙂

Haha! I just had to tell everyone that day because I was so stoked that I got the easiest question of the interview! (BTW, I totally remember you!) Thanks for the luck, I can use it :luck:.

Got my interview invite yesterday or day before yesterday 🙂. Bad thing though...it's in May 😱.

Damn I should have submitted my secondary earlier.+pissed+

Well - I ran through them all in my head (toaster, oven, microwave, blender..) and I was like crap..whatever i say has to have a REASON...so I said I would be an electric mixer because most of the time they are making cake and brownies and cookies and stuff....then I went into a while discussion about how much I love eating...it was kind of stupid but everyone was laughing and I got in so I guess they liked it!

well, hopefully we all will be eating cookies come fall. i only have to wait a few more days for mcat scores, so i will be expecting an interview soon. may interviews though, nothing like extending the stress train...

I hope you got great news. Let us know.

That said, anyone good at biochem? I SUCK at it. Does AZCOM have a tutor system? Anyone want to volunteer?

Does anyone else have to keep pinching themselves to make sure it's really true (that you're going to medical school). It really only hits me randomly and not fully even yet. My aunt keeps figuratively pinching me to remind me that it's all for real. When does reality truly sink in?!😳

Good luck everybody!

Reality hits you about the time you get your first exam grades in your mailbox. And you look at this 63% and think, I needed 70% to pass and I don't see how I could have studied any harder. Meanwhile, some of your classmates are complaining that they only got 93% or 98%. You get assigned a tutor at this point. Then the killer anatomy/anatomy lab/histology/histo lab quadruple hitter comes along in about week 4 and knocks a few people right out of medical school. You have studied harder for this exam than any other exam in your life and you barely pass.

It's right around this time that you realize you are in deep doo-doo and you need to work even harder to pull through this first quarter. And you can look forward to the second quarter when you are taking all the same courses, plus physiology as well.

And that's when you realize you're in medical school. So enjoy the thrill of getting in while it lasts. The ride is only beginning 🙂

...it made me cry

but not in that "wow that was so touching way" more in the "im scared..i want my mommy" way

Yeah. I'm guessing it was a bad day/month(s). I know it won't be easy. It's medical school. It's not supposed to be. You'll be fine. I'll be fine. We'll all be fine. (yes I know, the aforementioned poster will have something snarky to say about that, but I'm trying that whole "power of positive thinking" thing out for a spin. It could work. Maybe). YOu bake, I'll cook (I can't bake to save my life). We'll at least be well fed, even if we only get a 67% (or whatever it was).

It's okay to cry. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

We took 239847 finals last week and I managed to reign in some ridiculously pent-up tears until midway through the last exam, whereupon I completely lost it. I probably looked downright pathetic as I blotted away tear stains from my scantron sheets, but hey - if there's one thing medical school has taught me, it's that sometimes the people who seem to be blown to pieces often have it the most together when it really counts!

P.S. I was a blender, and a horse. They really need to throw some new questions into the mix. Sheesh.

Hmm, they didn't ask me what kind of kitchen appliance I would be. They asked me boring stuff like how would I reform the health care system 😕

I'm sorry if I scared people with my previous posting. Sarikate knows who I am and what my situation was in the fall. I was only trying to say that getting into medical school is the easy part. Getting through it is the insane part. Just go in with your eyes open, and be prepared to work harder than you have ever worked before just to keep up.

There's one thing you will hear over and over, because it's generally true: if you got in, it means you have what it takes to get through the program. But you may have to draw on inner strength and energy that you didn't know you had.

OK, back to the topic; didn't mean to spoil the party 🙂

I hope it gets better for you. Good luck! I'm sending good vibes in your general direction (you know, southwest of where I am). I do, however, have the world's worst sense of direction, so some random kid in toledo, oh may end up on the receiving end of all these good thoughts. It could happen.

The nice thing about the faculty and most administrators is that you can really talk to them about anything that is having a true dampening effect on your studies, and they will listen and try to help the best they can. I know many of my classmates have had difficulties over the past two quarters due to various circumstances; this is more common than you might imagine, and just goes to show you that we are all human and sometimes flail around like fish out of water.

I developed complications of a chronic illness over the past couple of months and was just a profound mess overall, but whenever I wasn't hospitalized or being biopsied or whatever, I made a huge effort to catch up on my work, and the faculty was right there with me; I'd spend hours and hours in their offices and they would essentially re-do their lectures for me personally. I have also been offered options as far as medical leave, an extended study program, etc. and I am seriously contemplating all of those ideas at this point. I felt miserable about those options at first, but I got over that pretty fast when I realized I was only hurting myself by not considering all the options.

Don't let yourselves get too bogged down in the muck, realize any limitations you may have, and remember that you will be here to learn as much as you can. Be proactive and do what you need to do to make sure you are really getting the best education you can for what you want to do! Take advantage of the wonderful faculty, most of them will astound you with their dedication to your cause 🙂

I just saw a group of people getting interviewed at AZCOM! If you were on the tour, I saw you in the family practice/OMM clinic... I wished a few of you good luck! Hope the rest of your interview day went well! Everyone looked very professional and I hope you all are my classmates next year! 🙂

withdrawing my slot once the mail comes from my parents with the online code...good luck everyone, one more slot soon available

Just wanted to let you all know that I'll be withdrawing soon. I recently was accepted into CCOM and while I loved AZCOM, I liked the fact that all of the clinical rotations are so well established and you can stay in the area at CCOM. Also the bf is moving with me and applying to law schools, and naturally there's more options in Chi-town.

Just wanted to wish you all luck at your interviews here, and that one more slot will be opening up👍
