AZCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone have the list of LA rotation sites? Cant seem to find it. Thanks!
Lakewood Regional Medical Center
Los Alamitos Medical Center
Fountain Valley Regional Hospital
Hollywood Presbyterian
Long Beach Memorial Hospital Center
St. Mary Medical Center, Long Beach
Pacific Hospital, Long Beach
California Hospital Medical Center, Los Angeles
Henry Mayo Newhall
Glendale Adventist Medical Center

We'll also be going back to a rural location in AZ for our ward based rotation in internal medicine. The advantage to this is since it counts as both a rural/underserved rotation and our ward based IM rotation, we get an elective third year 🙂 (according to Linda Hammon, coordinator for L.A. rotation sites)

Did anyone recently accepted receive any letter/paperwork from AZCOM yet? I was accepted 10/17...

Hi all,

So it is going on a few weeks since I interviewed in mid-October. I haven't seen a change in my portal, but no snail mail letters (even with bad news) either. Perhaps that means I was wait-listed? At what point is it worth following up on my status? Should I call, send an e-mail?

Thanks for the advice!

Perfectly acceptable to call at this point. Plus, you won't have to wait for somebody to check their email, check your status, then email you back.

Thanks for this. Having 1 elective in 3rd yr sounds great to get the jump on auditioning!

Some people have scheduled as far out as February, but spots earlier will continue to open up until...February.

Class size is 250, no clue how many people they've accepted so far this cycle, and they do end up accepting significantly more than 250 people to fill their seats.

Thank you!

Has anybody gone to visit admissions to talk or try to get some clarification about their file?

Just got my email confirmation from Terry that I will be in L.A. for rotations for 3rd year! Huge thanks to DbDan for that protip to email Dr. Speicher my rotation choice. I haven't even received my application packet yet and it's been over 2 weeks (15 days).

How long did it take to hear back from Dr. Speicher?

I've heard numbers around class size 250... accept about 450 overall... interview around 650.. those are all approximations though.

My perception with most schools is if you get an interview you stand a pretty decent shot. The trick is getting from the 3000 applications to the 600ish interviews. Dont forget those 450 acceptances are through the entire application cycle... all the way up to the first day.

Great! Very helpful, thanks.

After 3 weeks of trying I was finally able to schedule an interview on Nov 29 from jan 17th! So if you are interviewing in jan/feb or later. You might still grab a interview earlier. Midwestern is pretty much in my top choice and I love would to go there. So does anybody know if I should write a letter of intent or something to let them know that if I was accepted I would definitely attend?

Prepare as much as you can for your interview and see how it goes (read: wait to find out if you're accepted, WL, or denied). If you get WL'd, then you might want to think about writing a LOI.

Going to be cancelling my Jan 17 interview in the next day or so for anyone who wants it!!

Does AZCOM offer any kind of accelerated learning course the summer before MS-1? For like anatomy or something. I think I heard of some schools offering this?

Also, I was looking around on AZCOM's student life section of their website and saw the clubs. They don't offer a lot of clubs for specialties, so is this list extensive or are some not listed? If you wanted to set up a club for a certain specialty, is it difficult or pretty easy to set up/get approval?

Thanks!

Summer course? Why? Not that I know of.
Clubs? All kinds of clubs, well except for left pinky specialist.

In the folder they gave us at the interview there was a list of the clubs. Definitely a lot more than what is posted on the website

Course= no
Clubs= a ton more than listed on the website...MWU's website is pathetic in every regard, including providing club information.

Is it too late to apply? I think all I have to submit is the secondary and they have the letters etc. I wonder how many of the 250 seats are filled?

I want to say its too late cause you would create competition 😀. But it's not too late. I spoke to the admissions department and they still have plenty of seats to fill. They actually accept over 400 students (I've heard up to 500)

Could someone help me? I have interview on Dec 2, but I dunno which airport to fly into nor which hotel to stay at. What are your recommendations? I believe I need to fly into Phoenix airport but that seems a bit of a taxi ride to Glendale. I guess I will need to either rent a car or commute via cab.... 🙁
Also, I'm debating on getting either Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet while i'm there. Any opinions?

The information in the interview email lists all that information. The hotel I stayed in, Drury, supplied a shuttle to the interview. I used supershuttle.com in order to get from the airport to the hotel and back.

You need to fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor. You'll either need to use SuperShuttle, a taxi, or rent a vehicle to get to your hotel. As mentioned, there's a good list of hotels that the school should have emailed to you, or if you decide to rent a car and want to save some money on the hotel by staying a bit further away from the school, just look for hotels near zip code 85308.

I'd go with the Fire...you never know when B&N is going to make like Borders and kick the bucket...

Waitlisted pending further review. Should I treat this as a rejection? (pre-interview)

Nope. Always a chance they'll invite you to interview later. AZCOM regularly goes into its waitlist 50-70 deep is what the admissions lady told us on interview day

If you think your problem is grades/MCAT, keep the school updated with any new grades or scores. If you don't think it's that, just keep them updated with anything like that you can keep them updated with and make sure to keep them informed of other stuff going on with you like research, shadowing, etc. Your best bet is just being proactive. Unfortunately, Dr. Wily's referring to post-interview WL and not pre-interview.

When I applied last year, I was waitlisted in december, but I kept sending them letters of interest once a month. Don't bombard them with these letters, but keep showing interest and if they do offer you an interview, take the earliest one. That's what I did and it will improve your chances.

Yeah, I got that. (Guys, I was waitlisted post-secondary / pre-interview).

Oh well. sGPA should spike up from 3.34 to a 3.45 when Fall grades come out right before Christmas. MCAT is a 25R. Mailman better bring his back support belt with the amount of letters of intent I'll be sending out

I also was waitlisted post-secondary /pre-interview.

I have a bit of a problem with this though. They said that I cannot be granted an interview because I have not completed my O-chem. I am in O-chem 1 now and will finish my O-chem 2 during the spring. They need to see my O-chem 1 grade before they will give me an interview.

sGPA/cGPA: 3.76
MCAT 29

Kinda bothers me that I won't be granted an interview because of this.

got the 'application put on hold' letter as well... will probably send them a letter of interest in the mail and call about why it is next week

On hold pre-interview also. Shoot! Do they reject anyone outright or just put everyone on hold?

I'm not entirely sure how you orchestrate this effectively, but if anyone who has a December interview would like to trade me for my November 30th one, please let me know!

Nov 29 and Dec 2 openings currently. Good luck guys. I'll be there the 28th.

So I've been complete since the end of July. Crickets. I have an acceptance at LECOM-E, and am an alternate at SOMA and LECOM-B. Am I out of the game for AZCOM? Not rejected to my knowledge, unless just never contacting you is their way of rejecting you...

do you check the status page often?
https://online.midwestern.edu/applicant/index.cgi
I never received an email about an II but it was on the status page asking me to schedule my interview....I know of several others who never received emails but it gets posted to their status page

I still can't get over the fact I was waitlisted TWICE here. I don't know why they invited me to interview for the second year in a row if they wanted to waitlist me again, especially considering little changed about my application in that time (May to September).

If I get a call sometime soon I would consider AZCOM. It is a great school. Has anyone here been accepted from the waitlist yet this year?

Hey guys.
Could anyone give some hints or tips of what to expect for the interview?
Thx!

Know your answers to: Why medicine? Why D.O.? Why AZCOM? And a good overview of the types of "off-the-wall" thinker questions you might get are in the SDN interview feedback section. You'll also potentially field some ethical questions and questions pertaining to your academic background (like research, how your major could help you in medicine [if you're a non-science major], etc).

Call Admissions and they should be able to shed some light on all of this for you.
