AZCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For those people who got acceptance today, when did you interview? Don't they also meet tomorrow to send few acceptances?

My portal is quite at the moment...(I interviewed on Dec. 2nd).

Accepted!! Interviewed 11/19
I have a tough decision between MSUCOM and AZCOM. But looks like AZCOM atm, location is too good and the people at MWU were amazing!

RUN, how do students like living at San Lagos and San Prado? Can you please give me your honest input as to housing at or close to MWU. Much appreciated.

First, congrats on the acceptance.

Second, most students that live across the street in SL or SP seem to like it. I know classmates are always having random pool gatherings over there when they can and the apartments aren't shabby at all.

Housing actually at MWU
Pros:
-Right there on-campus; if you want to sleep five minutes til class starts, you can.
-Aside from rent, you only pay an electric bill.
-MWU automatically takes rent out of your disbursement so you don't have to deal with writing a check or anything for rent on a monthly-basis.
-Maintenance is pretty quick about getting things done.
-24/7 security + gated entry. I'm not 100% sure if anything's happened at SP or SL (I want to say they have though), but on-campus housing is the only place around here that I know of that hasn't had any car break-ins or burglaries. The only thing I know of that's happened on-campus was a friend had their bike stolen, but shortly after that it seems the school put somebody on apartment-watch all night rather than frequent drives/walks through the complex.
-All of your neighbors are students (and their families). Not many issues of mid-week partying or late-night disturbances. Plus, when finals week rolls around, there's a 24/7 "quiet hours" that's implemented (granted, nothing changes that week compared to any other week, though I guess if your neighbor was being loud you'd have more recourse against them than normal).
-They do a lot of housing-only events/mixers and also put snacks out during finals week.

Cons:
-Internet. Internet. Internet.
-Packages. If it's UPS or FedEx, your packages get sent to the MWU mail room and you either A) Have to intercept it there before they bring it over to housing. B) Have to get Jose (housing manager) to give it to you over at housing before he leaves for the day. C) You have to wait until 8:00pm so that an RA can get you your package. It is a truly awful, annoying, and asinine system. Plus, when you receive a package, Jose is supposed to email you about it but is known for forgetting to do so for a day or three (most of the time he does, but the ball gets dropped), which becomes an issue if you aren't supplied a tracking# by the shipper and it's something you really need/want.
-No chance of meeting outsiders that live right next to you. There are plenty of nice med/health students but sometimes normal people are a breath of fresh air. Plus, if you're single, it's rarely a good idea to crap where you eat.
-Rent's like tuition, it goes up just about every year for some reason or another...
-Sometimes they decide to do on-campus events that include closing off traffic through the complex and they never notify residents. Every year there's some poor sap who doesn't know about this during the Diabetes Walk, goes grocery shopping, comes back to campus and finds out they have to park on the street and haul their treasures back to their apartment from there. Last year, I was one of those saps. 😡
-The freaking landscaping crews. They're here all the time and there will be at least one instance a week in which they're right next to your apartment driving you insane. It's more of an issue the closer to the ground you are, but it's annoying no matter how high up you get.
-Some people find the 101 a bit hard to study or sleep near. The only time I'm bugged by it is when some chromosomally-fractured Phoenicians (I swear it's the same two or three people) decide week after week that it's cool to rev their engines or go as fast as they can on the 101 and the service road in attempts to impress (I can only imagine) somebody who'd be equally as impressed by a cat sniffing a dog's butt.

If you want specifics on anything else, feel free to ask .

Did you get an email when you saw the acceptance on the portal?

If I don't see any change on the portal after tomorrow, does that mean I am either rejected or waitlisted? They are still emailing me about rejection and waitlist, right?

I think I got accepted as well. It doesn't formally say it anywhere on the portal, but an accepted student checklist is now there. But when I click on the matriculation agreement, it says your information is being processed, please check back tomorrow. So I'm assuming I am accepted.....but I guess I'll wait until tomorrow to be sure.

But if I did, super excited, loved this school!!!

Checklist = accepted.

They don't send out emails for acceptances, WLs, or rejections. The only ways you'll for sure hear about an acceptance are the portal changes and about a month later you'll get your acceptance packet. If you're WL, I actually don't even know if they send you anything. If you're rejected, you'll get a snail mail letter eventually telling you so.

Just because you haven't heard back yet doesn't mean you're necessarily WL'd or rejected. A lot of times the committee meets a few times before somebody's accepted. If they told you that you should hear something back after the committee met today or tomorrow, then you can always call the school at the end of this week or sometime next week and get your status.

I think I'm also accepted -- this is what my portal looks like:

http://www.webpagescreenshot.info/img/994462-126201122836AM

I had my interview on Dec. 2

Congrats! I wish my portal looks like this...but I guess I have to wait till tomorrow at least.

I assume that the admission has made decisions and selected the applicants from many other interview dates. So, it is hard to predict whether admission will review mine tomorrow or not. Since you were from Dec. 2nd interview group, that means the admission has looked at the pool from Dec. 2nd group (I interviewed on Dec. 2nd as well). If they reviewed my file today and no change occurred, then I am likely waitlisted or rejected. I doubt that they are going to look at mine tomorrow again if they did today. :scared:

I'd like to say to have some hope, you never know... I'm scared this might not be true lol

just to give you hope....my portal changed like 5-6 hours after people started posting that they were accepted within my interview group...but I have heard of people getting accepted 2 weeks after people in their group got accepted....If I were you keep checking it and after 2-3 weeks call the admissions and ask for an update on your status and if its a waitlist write a Letter of Intent to send them as the deposits for those accepted early is due the 19th so I am sure more spots will open up

Thanks for the hopeful message! I will just wait and check the status this week because the admission committee met today and will meet again tomorrow. But, the admission counselor told us that there must be a change on the portal by tomorrow if you are accepted.

Not quite too late even tonight. When I was accepted people were posting acceptances in the early afternoon, didn't get mine until around this time after I had been pretty sure I was out. I'm pretty sure people the next day were getting acceptances.

Has anyone here submited secondary in November and still awaiting interview invite or got one recently? I was told it should take 1-2 weeks to hear back...I'm getting really worried 🙁

I saw my portal and said I need to put my deposit in by early Jan. I'm assuming this is an acceptance. They also gave me list of things I need to provide documentations for.

I was interviewed Dec 2.

Now I need to decide which school to attend....biggest decision I ever had to make so far.

Withdrew my acceptance today, maybe one of you will get it. Good luck guys!

Deposits arent due til 12/19. Maybe some movement after.

I just noticed that the Ohio sites aren't available on the preference sheet....I'm assuming these have been permanently removed then?

I just noticed that the Ohio sites aren't available on the preference sheet....I'm assuming these have been permanently removed then?

Correct. For now, my class is the last one able to do core rotations in Ohio.

Feels like all the seats are going to be taken up and there won't be anything left for those of us interviewing next year in Feb/April. Is it going to be much harder to get in if we interview late, or is the number of acceptances they give the same? Do you know when they fill up all the seats by for the class?

If I don't see the change on the online portal, does that mean I am either on an alternative list or rejection? The admission told me that they didn't make a decision yet.

If you called Admissions and they told you they haven't made a decision yet, they haven't made a decision yet so you shouldn't be WL'd or rejected. Again, sometimes the committee meets a few times before they ever make a decision one way or the other on somebody. Plus, the committee is probably still in their meeting for today or just finished it not too long ago, that's why I suggested not calling until later this week or next.

RUN, I'm guessing I'll rack up a total of $300k worth of loans, and 10 years of interest might total to $200k of interest... do you think it will be very stressful to pay it off?

Coming from Texas, I really want to go to AZCOM, but that tuition is so high -- I requested a report of the tuition breakdown

I may have a chance at TCOM since i'm in their MS program, but they probably won't give me an interview until later... and I have until Jan. 6th to pay the deposit.

Thanks for the advice!

Thanks for your supportive message all the time! Unfortunately, I couldn't wait and called the admission office to check my status this afternoon around 3 PM. They told me that I am rejected. I know it is a bad news, but I have two more DO interviews coming up this week and next week. Hopefully, I stay positive and get at least one acceptance before next year. I have 4 more interviews in January but I want to save money by attending the school that sends me an acceptance first. I don't really care which school I go to because I like to move from one place to another.

Eh, more-or-less you'll likely be just under $300k, but yeah, you're looking at a huge sum to pay off once you throw in that interest. Good luck on getting much of a report breakdown for where tuition goes. I think I might have posted what we were given when tuition increased for this year in last year's thread, but yesterday we had a meeting with the deans about everything that's coming up soon and they brought that up as well because they're constantly asked about it. They said they pay $800-1200 per student per rotation for most rotations, but that didn't quite explain where the bulk of the money went during MS3 and MS4...

As far as paying off the money goes, if you end up specializing it won't be all that hard to do (for instance, if you do gas it's entirely reasonable to expect to make ~$250k or more during your first year post-residency; you could easily get the loans paid off within five years at that rate). If you go primary care you can always work in an under-served area (plenty of places in Texas that qualify and not all are between Lubbock and El Paso), work for a non-profit (most hospital systems are non-profit and they're all getting into the business of owning PC clinics) and your loans are forgiven after 10 years, just pay the bare minimum for 20 years and have everything forgiven, etc.. There are plenty of options and paying off the loans is doable, it's just not going to be as pleasant as if you went somewhere cheaper.

Certainly if you can get into TCOM, I'd opt for that over AZCOM in a heartbeat. Even if they grant you an interview after you've paid the AZCOM deposit, you can always drop the acceptance if you get into TCOM, forget about the $1000 and enjoy saving about $300k for it.

That's sad to hear, but great to hear that you have so many interviews!

I only had one, and think I just did really well during the interview.

Good luck to you!

I don't see the preference sheet. Could you direct me to that? Is it something that is supposed to be filled out? Thanks

Thank you for the very thorough response!

I've thought about enlisting into the air force and be required to serve active duty or something. It's good to hear that there are so many options to take care of the loan, but I'm just hoping I don't have to eat ramen for a few years to get it paid before I can live a comfortable life.

I really like the MWU campus and would like to possibly get away from Texas for once, but at what cost? I've lived in the DFW area my whole life, did my undergrad in Denton, grad school in FW (TCOM) and go home every weekend to see my mom and stuff, but it's quite distracting to my studies going home. (Whether to hang out with family or friends, which as much as I love, is not great for my schooling)

If I do happen to go to MWU, perhaps I'd prefer to serve outside of TX -- I feel annoyed to work for TX despite not receiving any of their subsidized tuition to support me in the process.

May I inquire you about your financial plans to rid of this loan?

They'll mail it to you, but if you check out the AZCOM 2016 facebook group Terry posted a picture of it, you should be able to email her your preference

I'm apply for the next cycle, I was wondering if anyone who has been accepted can tell me what the rotation sites are.... I can't find a list or a straight answer from anyone.

If you're genuinely interested in the Air Force HPSP you really need to start working on your application for it, from everything I've read the AF is the most competitive, while the Navy is second most competitive. Coming military cuts are going to help either...

got accepted here today! so far my choices are CCOM and AZCOM, apparently midwesterners like me

If you're sincerely interested in the military for being in the military and not just the money, I'd suggest it but I got halfway through the AF process and decided against it because there were too many cons and not enough pros. Also, if they still have the same recruiter in DFW that they had when I was there, he's kind of a prick.

You did undergrad AND grad school in Texas plus your mom lives there, why wouldn't you be receiving subsidized tuition if you got into TCOM?

For me, it depends on what I go into. If I specialize, I'll probably just try to bite the bullet and put most of my income towards loans. If I go PC, I'll probably go the 10-year route through a hospital-owned office.

Oh I believe you have misinterpreted me or I didn't do a great job conveying it.

I meant to say that if I don't get into a Texas school, then I feel less loyal/obligated to practice in Texas because I wouldn't get the benefits if I were to be accepted & attended a school here.

Sigh, such a nice campus MWU is, but such big bucks...

I can't honestly say that I'm really "into" the AF, I would really be just doing it for the loan deferment...

Oh well, 'tis life... being accepted is such a great moment and relief, yet the journey of life is just one thing after another haha.

I hope everything turns out well for you, you've been a great help in helping me understand this process and the future of it.

Gotcha'. Makes much more sense now. haha

Thanks and hopefully you get some TCOM love, as it's a great school and so incredibly cheap. If not, see ya' around next year!

haha, I find it odd that your posts seem to be pushing me to TCOM more, don't you feel you should be promoting AZCOM? Or I guess you prefer to be realistic and unbiased, which is definitely an interesting and cool aspect.

I'd encourage you to go wherever you thought you'd be happiest and most successful at; unless AZCOM just gave you a "wow" factor that TCOM can't begin to approach, particularly for a Texan, AZCOM's good but has nothing on TCOM.

The tuition alone should warrant TCOM. That said, I would still go to all other interviews and put down a deposit. This is not something you want to risk and a few hundred will be nothing compared to losing a spot for this year. On another note, anyone who is still interested in an on campus roommate for next year, please send me a PM.

Tis the season for giving...on that note, if any of you is canceling or rescheduling a February interview will you pleaseeee PM me....I would love and thank you forever 😍

You would probably be best at checking online.midwestern.edu every day rather than checking here. A ton of people lurk SDN and never post, let alone make an account so just keep an eye out and spots will open for sure.

got a letter from the school..... put on hold for interview........... is there anything I can do to make them look at my application and fight for an interview? I will send in my fall grades as soon as they are ready (3A and 1B pretty sure). Anything else I should do? maybe like a letter of intent or something?

Send the grades and any new MCAT scores (if you plan on retaking it). Once you send in your grades, you can always touch base with them to make sure they've received your grades and later on to see where your application is in the process (ie. not reviewed yet, under review, etc). A LOI will likely be useless, but the new grades likely your biggest ally.

Thanks for the feedback. I won't be re-taking the MCAT. I will send in my fall grades, and I will probly shadow another DO over the Christmas break so I have something to say when I give them update of my application.

So I just got an interview invite but the earliest dates are in April. If I register for an April date and an earlier one opens up between now and then will I be able to change it? Feedback from anyone who has tried this would be much appreciated!

Yes, if you take an April date and eventually see an earlier date on the portal (you should be checking it as habitually as possible because dates are going to be opening up here in the next week or two as people have to start paying deposits), you can reschedule to the earlier date.

Not necessarily true. The past couple of cycles the school's been accepting fewer people early on so that they have more seats available towards the end of the cycle for any late-applicants they really like.

Has anyone been called off of the waitlist?

The waitlist is the part of the medical school application process that drives me crazy. Maybe they will accept you, maybe not. But you will usually be wondering what their answer is for the entire cycle.

During my interview day we were told that waitlist movement will only occur after May,once the last batch of interviews and therefore responses have been handed out.
