AZCOM Discussion Thread 2011-2012

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How would one go about contacting and updating them? Is it as simple as emailing: [email protected] ? and within the email body say one's updates/recent accomplishments/changes etc?

Thanks

I'd recommend writing an actual letter (but it's not an LOI, just an update letter).

So I've got an interview at AZCOM coming up. They say they provide breakfast and lunch, how is the quality of the food?

Breakfast = you're better off eating something ahead of time if things haven't changed from a couple of years ago (think bottled water/juice and granola bars).
Lunch = cafeteria voucher (again, unless this has changed from a couple of years ago) and the food isn't terrible but you're likely not going to rant and rave about it.

We had bottled water, granola bars and a little basket of candy bars. If you're staying at the Drury, their breakfast is pretty good so try and get up early enough to eat there.

So I'll be interviewing 1/20 staying at the Drury Thursday night 1/19. Anyone else in the same boat?

Also...I'm new to the thread and have noticed there are a number of people who have been accepted to great osteopathic schools (i.e., CCOM, DMU-COM, etc) in addition to AZCOM and have decided to make Glendale their new home. I'm curious, outside of geographic reasons, if anyone could comment why they have chosen AZCOM.

Anyone interviewing this fri and staying at the comfort inn?

Drury Hotels are so awesome. Too bad they don't have any in California. Milk that free food for all its worth.

None that I'm aware of on the east coast, either. And at 80 bucks a night and flatscreen TVs, it's a great deal even without the free food, which may put them in the red after I roll through.

A couple pages back I gave a quick breakdown of why i chose AZCOM, if you want more info about the other schools and why i didn't choose them shoot me a pm. Congrats on the interview!

How do you pay the tuition at AZCOM? I have been accepted, put my deposit down, but I'm really freaking out about the ridiculous cost of tuition at AZCOM. For you med students how do you pay for it? Is there any good sources of financial aid? Scholarships? Subsidized loans?

Assuming you're a U.S. citizen: federal loans. Lots and lots of federal loans. If you'd consider serving in the military or NHS for reasons other than the money alone, they both have scholarships that essentially cover tuition and most living expenses. As far as institutional scholarships go, AZCOM doesn't really have a whole lot compared to schools such as KCOM (partially because it's always been expensive and hasn't been around nearly as long as a lot of other schools and therefore still has mostly indebted or recently debt-free alumni).

I did interview at AZCOM in the past. Just wanted to say congratulations to everyone of you who got accepted.

Sincerely
Pharm.D. now Lcme M.D. student

To qualify for the NHS scholarship do you have to be going into primary care?

Yep. You also have to agree to work in an under-served area for however many years you get the scholarship (min: 2, max: 4). It's also incredibly competitive so applying early is vital.

Also, since I'll be checking out of my hotel at 7am, is there a place where we can leave our luggage (just one bag) for the duration of the interview at the university?

Yes, they put ur luggage at this closet in an office across the meeting room. I arrived at Comfort Inn at 11pm, slept from 1-6am, did the interview, left for the airport at 5pm.

BTW, I got LA rotations...anyone else?

Withdrew application and canceled interview for 1/24/12. Already put down a deposit somewhere else.

This is mostly just for the sake of curiosity and for future reference, but how do away rotations work? I assume that you have to set up the rotation with the hospital or clinic where you are planning on rotating, and then what? Do you go there and rent an apartment for a month or just live out a hotel? Is the only reason to do an away rotation if you are hoping to get a residency there?

Yeah, you contact the places you're interested in rotating at as well as your rotation coordinator and hope everything pans out. As for housing, it depends on the place I believe. I think some of them provide housing of some sort while others do not.

Most people tend to only do aways at places they'd like to match at but plenty of people do them just to do them too.

OK I'm having a hard time finding this with the search function -- maybe I'm entering the wrong search phrases -- but does anyone know if you can use CCOM's rotation sites if you go to AZCOM since they're both part of the Midwestern University system?

You can't.

In that case, does the fact that VSAS is open to DO students now make it significantly easier to attend a school like AZCOM that gives you freedom to set up your own rotations?

I'm not quite sure what you are asking. Most schools allow you to set up your own away rotations for electives during your 3rd/4th year. The VSAS only makes it easier to apply to Allopathic rotation spots since you can now use one application to apply to a broad range of spots. In the past, you had to fill out a separate application to request each spot. For DO away rotation spots, you still have to fill out separate applications for each spot since you cannot use VSAS for that. It does not make it "easier" to get a spot, only less time consuming.

Hope that helps a little.

Hello everyone,
I have an interview scheduled for Jan 23rd, however something has come up and I have to move it back. Does anyone have an interview scheduled for the week of February 1st that they would like to trade for?? Please PM or reply if you want to trade or plan to cancel your interview around that time!! Thank you and good luck to everyone this year!

Does anyone know if AZCOM is still sending out interview invites? I have been complete with them since December but have not received anything from them.

Should be. Unfortunately, it takes awhile to get the wheels going again after the holidays. You can always call and inquire about your status though.

Quick question about the immunization titers!

So, the 'welcome letter' first states "Please remember that you should be well on your way to completing your immunization requirements. We cannot stress enough the importance of completing these requirements."

However, the following paragraph then says "It is recommended that students wait until they arrive to campus or at orientation to begin their titer requirements."

So, I'm confused. When do I need to get these things done?

If you want to make your life easier, get the titers done sometime between now and orientation (if you're insured, some people's insurance will cover it and some won't so you might want to check because if yours will, it'll be a whole lot cheaper than using the school's lab). Even better, just get them done when you're doing your physical or one of the TB-skin tests. If for some reason you don't show immunization to one of the diseases, you'll have to eventually get that taken care of and for something like the HepB series, it can take months to finish the series and it's easier to do when you're not in med school than when you are in med school.

It's not the end of the world if you wait until you're here to get things going on the immunizations/titers, it all really is mostly a matter of convenience.

No, but it's been less than a week, my friend. I'm sure we'll hear something soon. Welcome to the forums.

Thanks for the welcome.

I know its been less than a week, but I cant help being a little compulsive and obsessive. :meanie:

You cannot, however, as per the last meeting we had with the deans they have a few rotation sites in Chicago now (granted that could change any day).

True. I was recently assigned to Chicago for the third year site. It's at Swedish Covenant Hospital near uptown.

For those of you that have been accepted, what day of the week did you receive notification via portal?

Just got into another school and will be withdrawing my interview date for THIS monday, jan 23rd. Anyone want it? Please PM me!

I interviewed here last Wednesday. I was lucky enough to find a friend from school there and it made the day pretty fun. I have to say it by far the nicest campus that I have seen for any of the D.O. schools that I have interviewed at. Truly beautiful. Also, it really felt like a university (as opposed to the small school feeling that I have gotten at other schools).

Anyway, I withdrew my application the day after I interviewed because I was accepted at another school.

Good luck to you all.

Any Canadians who got accepted at AZCOM wanna share how they are gonna show 352K in the bank account to be issued I-20? Pls PM me....I'm having hard time trying to find a solution

Wow, congrats, but I highly doubt anyone would be able to get a ticket and hotel to fly out tomorrow for this. It's nice enough for people to post though, so thank you for that at least.

For those of you that submitted secondaries to AZCOM and KCOM, did you use the same answers to the prompts, like essays and healthcare experience? Would it hurt to just copy and paste? Thanks.

I'm assuming you mean CCOM and it's completely acceptable because the two campuses' admissions are independent of each other. Just make sure you change all of those AZCOMs to CCOMs.

For those who got accepted, could you please let me know what changes you see to your portal? My portal looks different than what it was last week, but I didn't receive any phone call from the school yet.

You most likely won't receive a phone call. Portal change = acceptance. Celebrate. 👍

So my portal status hasn't changed since I had my interview six days ago, am I screwed?

They may not have met to decide on you yet; I wouldn't count yourself out.

Just be patient.

In the same boat as you bud, lets hope we hear back Thurs or Friday

I interviewed on the 13th and they told us not to start expecting any word until this Friday.

When did they say this? At the end of the day, Bree told us that we would hear something the following week.
