OK...my dad called me and said that my mousepad had arrived. I can start getting some sleep again..... <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> .

I also got some on-campus living info. I realize due to everyone's differing circumstances a lot of you aren't able to live on-campus. If all of you could, though, would you live on-campus? I'm trying to cope with the fact that the cost of living is quite a bit more in Glendale, AZ than in Texas. But, it looks like you can save considerable $$$ by having a roomate. Everyone I have talked to here at home has said do not have a roomate for your first year. Any current AZCOMers have any advice about on-campus housing, roomates, etc.? Do you really save a lot of money in the long run by living on-campus? Also, what do current students do as far as workout facilities go? From what I see there isn't any on-campus. Thanks!

As you know titan, i am not yet at AZCOM,but I remember there is a small workout facility on campus. i think it was in the same building as the admissions office. Conceptually that doesn't make sense, but i seem to recall that is where it is.
To answer your question, I would live on campus if I could because I think it is just easier to have rent taken out of your financial aid and not have to worry about it, not to mention the proximity and all of the incidentals that are included (water, dsl, etc.). Unfortunately, I can't because of my beloved pets.
If i could, I would put in for the room mate match too. I have never had any problems with any room mates, and you have a built-in study partner.
Of course, now that I am married, I have a built in do-fun-stuff-other-than-studying-partner.
I hope you get more helpful input on this subject.

titan,

why would you consider not having a roommate? I know that there is a risk of non-capatability, but I think there would have to be a way to limit that risk. I for one will be looking for one or even two roommates. I am also looking to live off campus and looking for a place with a lot of room. As long as you have your own space Almost anyone can live together.

I am living off campus strictly because of my dog. Regardless of whether I lived off or on campus, I will be needing a roommate. Living expenses are also a lot more expensive in the Phoenix area than in the Tucson area. I don't see why having a roommate your 1st year would be bad. I've had roommates that sucked, but either they or I were never home so I never saw them anyway. I have a feeling we will all be spending a great deal of time in the library anyway  But if you are thinking that you will just super sick of the person, there are always activities and studying to do with other groups of people.

Now the problem with living off campus and having a dog is actually finding a roommate willing to live with someone else's spoiled little dog

Definitely off-campus, I want to be able to get away from school every once in a while. The misses and I are actually looking at buying a townhouse/condo or something.

Thanks for all of the input guys/gals.
Sport, my issue with the roomate match is the obvious one.....the compatability or lack thereof between the both of us. I'll figure something out....

hey, anybody have any really good roommate stories? I do!

One time I had to find a place to live for like 6 months and I went to the paper to find a roommate. She seemed pretty normal at the time I first met her, but within two months she decided that she was going to move....I could either go with or find a new roommate. With only four months left I decided to move with. What a bad decision. This girl one time went out with me and my grilfriend at the time to a bar and we ended up meeting a few people randomly. She decided to hang with these other guys while my girlfriend and I went to a movie. Then next morning she comes in the house screeming at me about how she ended up in the hospital last night with hypothermia and that morning I wouldn't answer the phone therefore she had to take a cab home. By the way this I was told was all my fault. Story is she got really loaded with these guys and was arguing politics with them at their apartment and then went to their outdoor hot tub at 2 am. The guys never found there way to the hot tub. Instead they past out and left her out there in the middle of December and the night watchman kicked her out....needless to say she got a little cold and ended up in the ER.

That was only one of a handful of times with this freak. Do not agree to room with this one. She is about 5'2" dark stringy hair, 30-something and switching to her 6th undergraduate degree choice. Anyway thought I might share. :D

I have had bad luck with roommates. One roommate left dirty dishes in the sink so long mold grew on them. This happened a lot. It was nasty. Another roommate was so drunk and high (I wish I had known he was into that before he moved in) that he accidentally locked himself out of his room and kicked the door in and tried to get out of paying for it by saying that when he opened the door (as in, opened it normally), it broke. Whatever.

Another roommate and I got into a screaming match that could have prompted our neighbors to call the police-- she went off on me when I asked her if she fed the dog... Pyra was our dog at the time, and she kinda threatened to kill her, so the dog became just mine as well as the apartment. That is the nastiest argument I have ever been in. I cried about it for like a week and moved into my mom's house while she moved out. This was about a week before I took the MCAT. Nice.

When my most recent roommate moved in, her lesbian friends were helping her (she's not a lesbian, but a lot of her friends are). My room was in the loft which was pretty open. It was like 6am on June 1st. School was out, and I was sleeping in. Or trying to sleep in. I don't sleep in anything skimpy, but I don't appreciate people coming into my room when I am asleep because I am usually oblivious, and it weirds me out because I don't know what they did. Anyway, one of them said "Oh, what's up there?" and just came up into my room and started looking in my closet and stuff while I was konked out. I just realized that sounds like I'm against lesbians or something. I'm not, but I don't want any of them in my room at 6am. I don't want anyone in my room at 6am for that matter.

I have tons more evil roommate stories between the four of these people. The slob, the druggie, the moody one, and the spaz. Nobody's perfect. I am far from it, but these people! Wow...

Funny stories <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> ! I have a couple, but they are no comparison to ya'lls...

I'm going back up to Glendale today to look around at some places again. I have a couple questions on how the 5% off works at Sage Stone and what other complexes have to offer Midwestern students. If anyone's interested, I will postwhat I find here tonight.

Boy what a long day I had yesterday! I got a late start because I was being slow around the house. I left at 10 and got to AZCOM around noon. I was going to ask if they have a list of people that wanted roommates for next year or if they were going to start one, but everyone was at lunch. So I went to lunch too. Then I proceeded to look at 4 complexes for the second time and 2 that I missed when I was up there last month. There was a spring training game going on in Peoria when I drove by the stadium! It was 85 out and I really wanted to go catch some of the game. It was a beautiful day. Anyway, I narrowed down my list to 3 complexes I really like and I went back to AZCOM at about 4pm. I got in touch with Kathy from Student Services. I was very disappointed in her. I think she miunderstood me because she kept telling me about apartment complexes that were nice in the area, which I obviously did not need to know. When I asked about roommates again, she directed me to a bulletin board. Of course, the people on the board want roomies now and not in August. So she was very unhelpful. I will have to contact her later and ask, when the end of the quarter gets nearer and people will need roommates for next year.

OK. On my way back to Tucson, fighting rush hour traffic, I stopped in Ahwatukee (SW Phoenix) to drop off my nephew's very belated b'day present with his grandmother. My sister-in-law was down the street at some kind of yard sale and she did not even acknowledge acknowledge her mom when she called her to come say hi to me. I know my sister-in-law is angry with me, but I thought that was especially petty. So it was about 5:30 at this time and I went inside to chat a bit with my brother's mother-in-law. She kept me until about 8:10pm!!! I didn't have my glasses with me that I wear when I drive at night so I had no depth perception at all on the way home. My eyes were dead when I walked in my door. So it was a very long day. But a nice one.
