Hey everyone, I’ve been fortunate to have had a far more successful DO cycle than I had anticipated and have narrowed my choices down to these 2 schools. I’d greatly appreciate your advice as I have to decide within a few days.

AZCOM
Pros:

  1. Above average board scores
  2. 98-99% match rate over the past 3 years
  3. It’s close to my family and long term gf. I’m from the opposite side of Phoenix so it’s about a 50 minute drive.
  4. My goal is to land a residency in AZ someday and I’ve heard that going to a local school and rotating at local hospitals will give me a leg up.
Cons:
  1. It’s a really fast paced testing curriculum with 2-3 exams per week on average.
  2. Graded curriculum with a +\- scale
  3. It’s much more expensive than Touro at 84k per year (this probably won’t matter bc a government agency agreed to pay for my medical training but I guess I should consider it just in case they back out)
  4. Huge class size of 250 students
TOURO Nevada
Pros:

  1. P/F grading system with internal rankings
  2. Systems based curriculum compared to Midwestern’s traditional format
  3. More relaxed exam schedule with exams every week or 2.
  4. Really generous remediation exam policies which seems like it would lower my stress
  5. Smaller class size of about 180 students (potentially significant since I’m hearing impaired and use hearing aides)
  6. 100% match rate over the past 2 years
  7. Even better average board scores than Midwestern
  8. Cheaper than Midwestern at 67k yearly tuition
Cons:
  1. I don’t know basically anyone in Nevada except distant relatives who may as well be strangers
  2. All of their rotations are within 45 minutes of Henderson and I’d prefer not to match a residency in Nevada
  3. Honestly, I’ve never particularly liked Nevada or the Las Vegas area. During my interview other students were getting really excited about potentially going to see shows or do other activities on the strip and I just don’t care for them.
  4. It would be my first time moving out of state so it might take me a bit longer to get settled
Summary:
I’m torn between a more stressful/rigorous school which keeps me near my support system and a school which will almost certainly be less stressful but may make it harder to match back in Arizona. I’d appreciate any and all input.

This is hard. I usually say to prioritize family and support system, but p/f and cheaper tuition of touro nv is pretty great. Would your long term gf be coming with you to nv if you chose to go there.? 4.5 hr drive isnt too bad to go see family and friends a couple times a year but it would def be hard on a committed relationship

Thank you for your response!

She would not be coming with me because she is hoping to do her masters here in Phoenix where we did our undergrad. She’s made a lot of connections to the faculty in her program and she feels that she’d gain the most from a masters by staying local.

It’s tough because I don’t really have a large family, and all 3 of the closest people I love would be staying here in the valley.

I hear you. I think you have your answer then. You’ll succeed no matter where you go. Staying in AZ means you get to stay around those you love. To me at least that’s worth the extra tuition and graded curriculum
