I just went by timeline. I think it's easy to start over thinking all this and start worrying a lot on the little things. Don't let the neuroticism get to ya!

Just be honest and write up to the best of your memory can serve. Even tiny mistakes won't be a death sentence. Once you triple check everything, sleep on it, then check it one more in the morning and hit submit! And don't look back!

It's only the start!

Really admire your resilience OP. Most premeds with grades at the beginning of this thread would give up. You keep getting up no matter how much you fall. I know I'm far away from med school, I'm only in high school, but you give me hope. Hope you get in. 🙂

Enjoy highschool while you still can. When you get to college really your time there also but put in your work when you have to and have a good time when you get work done. It's a long road so don't list the little bumps throw you off your Goals nor discourage you!

My people! And I thought I was the only one....

My experience applying as someone with an undergrad GPA well below 3.0:

Same initial story as most of you...aimless and immature throughout college, took 10 years to get my BA (English). Went to graduate school for English and did well. It was during that time that I realized I wanted to be a doctor. Finished grad school and immediately began my prereqs. Completed those about 2 years ago, took the MCAT for the 3rd time last June, just finishing with this year's application cycle.

Results:

Undergrad GPA: 2.5
Grad GPA: 3.8
Postbac GPA: 3.65
MCAT: 31 (7 PS, 11 BS, 13 VR)

This cycle: 2 interviews, 2 waiting lists (still waiting! and getting my app ready for next cycle...quite the mind trip).

Major obstacles: With so many people applying to these schools, you are relegated to 2 numbers...GPA and MCAT. Those numbers are next to 4,000+ other people's numbers. They have to actually click on you to see all of the great experiences you have had, read your statement, want to meet you (ADCOM told me all this). I know for a fact that most schools I applied to never even opened my app. As I checked my portal at these schools throughout the cycle, most remained "Ready for Review" (or some equivalent wording) for the duration, before sending me a rejection sometime over the past month. This is combined with several rejections I got very early in the cycle from DO schools that I know my more meaningful stats (science GPA, MCAT) were competitive for (above their average). I consider myself very blessed to have gotten 2 interviews, and still have a chance at matriculating this fall.

My advice (for what it is worth): Obviously, do well in your prereqs. I didn't get straight A's, but did well enough to remain competitive. In my interviews, they never seemed to hint that my 3.65 would be a hindrance (especially when compared with a decade's worth of 2.5!). Of course, a 4.0 would be better, but don't beat yourself up over the occasional B+. But definitely do your absolute best on that MCAT...that one test can make up for a lot of flaws. That score is huge. Yes, we are all more than our MCAT (and GPA) scores, but that score gets you into the dance. Then you can show your moves. (Horrible metaphor...I'm picturing all of us -3.0ers in our spiffy shoes and popped collars dancing circles around everyone one else. Of course there is a disco ball as well, and an open bar.) Really try to rock that MCAT. I was aiming for a 30+ (about the accepted applicants average), and got it, but it doesn't make up for my low GPA. That is, it's not an eye-opener. If I had to do it all over again I'd study like my life depended on it and aim for something higher. That 7 in PS isn't doing me any favors either.

So then, there is the dance. Get as much clinical experience as you possibly can. I have a decent amount, and was told in an interview that I could have more (I am volunteering in an ER once a week now, to address that weakness). Shadow docs. Volunteer (clinical or otherwise, but clinical is always better). Put aside at least a month for your personal statement. I thought, "It's a page...how hard can it be?" It was the most difficult thing I ever wrote (even as a former English major). Especially being in our (spiffy) shoes, when we have so much that we want to tell/explain about ourselves. Give it the time and attention it deserves.

In the end, we can do it! And we will be great doctors, because we have lived life and decided to go back and work our butts off to get where we want to go. We are in it for the right reasons. I have a lot of respect for all of you, and wish you all the best in the world. Now go kick ass!!
 
Finally got my grades back for spring and my first semester taking prereqs I ended up with a 3.86 while taking 16 units. Really wanted all As, but I'm not upset over getting one B+. Feeling some renewed confidence in my ability to make it and complete med school. My cumulative GPA has finally reached the 3.0 mark, the last time it was above that point was fall 2006.

Still waiting for AACOMAS verification and the official gpa that will be showed to the DO schools I applied to...Getting purty nervous now. Some people are reporting AACOMAS calculating their gpa higher than their own calculations and some people are reporting the opposite happening...Hopefully the former occurs or it just stays neutral... :xf:
 
Hey!

For anyone who doesn't know me, I didn't finish college my first time around and went into academic limbo with a 2.71. Over a decade later now, I've got an associate's and about to finish a completely-rebooted bachelor's, but almost 140 credits at a 3.9 has barely dragged me up to a 3.05 cGPA (by my calculations, anyway -- I know AACOMAS and AMCAS might come up with something different). MCAT 30 (8 PS / 12 VR / 10 BS).

Finished AACOMAS (with a transcript pending in the mail) on 6/2 and finished AMCAS last night.

Best of luck to everyone applying this year and to everyone still waiting on letters from last cycle. I've been reading this thread since it first opened and so many of you impress the heck out of me. I sincerely hope everyone here gets to embrace their dreams.

Hey guys, been a long time lurker here. I've contemplated many times as to when I should pull the trigger and start taking prerequisite classes for medical school. Well after getting married, having two kids, and working as an RN for a good amount of years, it seems like the best time is to start now. My first year in state college did not fare me so well (Withdrew all of my courses in Fall '06, and accumulated a whopping 0.067 GPA in Spring '07 for 15 unit attempts. THAT'S RIGHT GUYS, 0.067 gpa!!!!) Yes, I was one of those young and dumb immature guys who did not take college seriously and did not take the initiative to take school seriously until later. Since then, I've gotten my act together and managed to do exceptionally well by getting by racking up a 3.67 GPA in my BSN program and getting mostly A's and B's on my science courses (Intro. to Chem = "B", Anatomy = "A", Physiology = "A", Microbiology = "A")
Factoring all of my grades, my current stats and are:

27 years old
cGPA: 3.065 (with about 154 college credit units accumulated) <--- I guess you can say I barely made the cut-off in here??? 🙂
sGPA: 3.733
4 years of nursing experience

I haven't started on my premed prerequisites but have enrolled in General Chemistry 1 for the following Fall '15. I plan on take each science courses a semester, balancing it out by repeating the courses I have failed back in Spring '07 (Damn you 0.067 GPA!!!). By the time I finish my prerequisites, I will be 30/31, maybe even 32. Some of you guys are probably thinking, why are you slowing it down and not taking two science classes a semester?!?!?! Well, I have two kids, and am working full-time NOC shift as a registered nurse. Squeezing in a science course a semester is already taking a load on my schedule with family and work, the thought of throwing in another science course in the mix will force me to work part-time, something I cannot afford to do at the moment. I am blessed to have a wife who understand my dreams and goals of becoming a physician, and is willing to be the breadwinner of the family, should I get accepted into an MD/DO program. I'll do my best to update this thread with my progress in school. 🙂
 
Hi guys! Sorry if this is a stupid question. I graduated with a cGPA of 2.7 and a sGPA of 2.5. I did okay in my pre-reqs but I crashed and burned in my upper division science courses. I want to start taking post-bacc courses to bring my GPA up. Should I just take upper division courses? Or should I retake my pre-reqs? :\
 
I apologize to the two posters above for not giving a proper response yet. I have been dealing with my own issues right now of AACOMAS not accepting my retakes post-verification. Because of this, my gpa in both c and s categories has dropped significantly below a 3.0. With the retakes counting I am around a 3.2. So right now I am in the process of appealing all of this and contacting the proper people in the AACOM/AACOMAS about this issue.

I would say just retake all F/D/C coursework but considering the total ****show AACOMAS grade replacement is right now, I'm not so sure.
 
I'm really banking on that this is just a giant internal miscommunication/understanding within AACOMAS. I have officially filed my appeal, so hopefully I will have some good news to report soon

Do they give a reason why they aren't accepting it or do you have any idea why they did that?

I have a feeling that a lot of my courses won't be accepted as retakes the way I would like them to so I'm curious as to the experiences of others.

edit: I see the other threads now, that really sucks, I hope things get cleared up.

So, figure id post here, just stumbled upon this thread. I'm not really not traditional so to speak, since I just graduated. Even so, I started off college horribly. 1.3 GPA, lost scholarship, almost kicked out (talked my way into 1 more chance basically)

Grades started gradually increasing. Good grades sprinkled in with 1 bad grade per semester in sophomore year, but still nonetheless an increase getting my GPA above a 2.0 .

Junior year started getting it more together. Finished my last 3 semesters, with all upper level science courses in the A, A-, B+s and getting on the deans list last 3 semesters.

GPA stands as 2.991 as of now, due to large part to that reallllly crappy freshman year. Retaking both gen Chems in the summer. Which should get science GPA past 3.0
Still have to retake Gen Bio 2 and Physics 1, as the grades are C- in those. Might one or the other to the summer semester, to only need to take 1 in fall, and possibly still apply in August, with just 1 pending grade. GPAs should be past 3.0, but since having 1 PreReq as a C- upon applying, might be screened out. Going to have to call schools and see if they'll actually look at me with my grades as they will be, with 1 pending.

Needless to say, hoping for the best to be able to apply this cycle in August !!!
 
Just a quick update. I got most of my retakes approved except for 2. All because my school's Zoology dept changed to the Biology dept. So the course prefix is different BUT at the same school. So I am having to get a letter written by the dept stated that these classes are the exact same but just that the dept went through a renaming a couple years ago.

So my appeal continues.

AMCAS verified. Got the email this morning and my hands were seriously -- literally -- shaking as I blew through the site to look for my GPA.

I could cry right now. By my massive spreadsheet I had a 3.05 cumulative, and I knew that AMCAS would do it differently so the real calculation could easily tank me forever.

But lo and behold AMCAS: Total hours: 298 / sGPA 3.85 (98 hrs) / AO 3.0 (200 hrs) / cGPA 3.28!!!

Unfortunately since I never finished college first round, my last nearly 6 years between nursing school and a new degree are all lumped in with my poor senior year 12 years ago, so in the Fr/So/Ju/Sr breakdown it doesn't look like I had an upward trend at all. Someone will have to actually LOOK at my list of grades to see the giant block of A's in the last few years, which may still prove to be my downfall. But least I'm not out of the party yet.

But still. 3.28? I couldn't believe it. My cGPA twelve years ago was 2.71 at almost 150 credits, so you can see diminishing returns are no joke. For all of you busting your humps: it CAN be done.
 
I have been lurking the SDR forums for a while now, but with this upcoming app cycle, I am only starting to understand the US system in earnest (I am Canadian) -- and it is huge! I could use a little directed advice.

I wanted to ask if anyone knows of any MD/DO schools that value a substantial post-bacc upswing enough to overlook a disastrous first undergrad (ie. where should I aim my efforts?). Rough stats estimate:

undergrad GPA: 2.4 (~120 credits)
post-bacc GPA: 3.93 (~90 credits)
MSc GPA: 3.925 (24 credits)
Sept 2012 MCAT: 34Q (PS 12/ VR 12/ BS 10)
August 2014 MCAT 34 (PS 11/ VR 11/ BS 12)

Thanks for the help! And congrats to those who have posted non-trad progress! It is encouraging.
 
So finally have some good news and bad news:

1st the good news. ALL of my retakes finally got approved and my GPAs have been calculated correctly.

The Bad news: Because of changes this year in AACOMAS and course identifications, I incorrectly calculated my GPAs to the old standard. My official AACOMAS gpa right now is a 2.99 c and 2,93 s with a 25 mcat.

I am taking a summer class right now BUT I won't be able to count this class into my GPAs until Septmenber 1st. This summer class will bump me into a 3.0.

What is dragging me down in the sGPA is that now this year EMT courses are listed as a "science", but last cycles is was listed as a "non-science". So this emt course is dragging down my sgpa along with an "Bioethics' course....


Its frustrating an disheartening, but it is what it is now. I have to push forward and hope some DO school somewhere gives me a chance at an interview...

The site was down this morning when I called again. Amanda called me back to say they found it and is in queue to be entered today. I won't hold my breath.
 
Ugh guys I woke up this morning to the most startling news....to me anyways. My beautiful string of consecutive As was broken with a B+ in a ridiculously hard structural biochemistry class. I feel horrible. I had a 95 going into the final
. Because the final was worth 50% I'm assuming I bombed it with a low B.

I'm a comeback kid who has had 16 As in my DIY PB but they've been mostly lower division classes. This being my only upper div class, do you think it will reflect badly on me and make my gpa look like a fluke.?

I wish my school used the +/- system. Anyways, I think you'll be just fine. It sounds like a really difficult class. All of your hard work and success with all those other As won't be overshadowed by one B+ in a really challenging class. Congrats and keep up the awesome work!

Personally I would have it sent again. AACOMAS never received one of my transcripts sent in May and I had it resent in June, pushed me back in line weeks for verification. Still verifying now.

I requested the school send it again which was June 5 and still waiting I hope it gets there soon

I called last week about another transcript and they finally found it now just waiting for one more
 
Man, I can't believe it's already been 2 years since I created this thread!

It's been a long journey so far BUT it has gone by incredibly fast! I mean like, scary fast!

Over the past 2 years I have retaken over 13 courses and replaced every grade I have below a B in, taken the mcat, found a wonderful job that pays the bills while also allowing me hands on patient experience, got connected with a wonderful volunteering organization, and have made wonderful friendships in person and in SDN that have blossomed into real life friendships!

Since starting this thread I have brought my cgpa up from a 2.54 to a 2.99 and Sgpa from a 2.1 to 2.93 thanks to DO grade replacement. I have applied to 27 DO schools and am pushing forward with this cycle and my last summer class.

Over the past 2 years we have had a lot of posters come on this thread and give us great inspirational stories of many achieving their dreams/goals of being accepted into medical school. A lot of other posters shared their plan of actions to get their GPAs up and apply to med school but sadly haven't been heard from since.

So I hope the earlier posters on here have found what they were looking for and success in whatever they decided to do.

I for one am extremely excited for what the future holds, even if this cycle doesn't land me an acceptance, I have gone through my past and proven that I am more than capable to handle the courses. My past mistakes, we're just that. Mistakes that I had to go through as a young dumb stubborn 20 year old. If I could go back 8 years and change things, the only thing I would do different would be to withdraw from school completely and work full time until all my other life issues got sorted out. Besides that, everything else I did has landed me in this great situation I am in now and filled me Tons of great life experiences that I carry with me as a grow as a man and hopefully future physician.

So thank you all the support everyone on here and supporting each other. I really hope this thread goes on for as long as SDN does.

Been awhile since I have been on SDN but here is my situation/story

cGPA 2.9
sGPA 3.39
MCAT 30
10 years as a paramedic, strong LOR, etc

My big issue is I have multiple retakes and some courses I have taken more than twice (dyslexia and physics do not mix). I am thinking of applying with the cGPA of 2.9 but not sure if it is a wise plan. Honestly, my funds are dwindling and college retakes or new courses are expensive.

Turn the big 3-0 this year and am starting to feel the pressure. Already accepted into a PA program but having serious reservations. Hate the "what-if" factor.

Go big or go home. Don't settle and have that "what if" thought on the back of your mind 10 years from now.

A 2.9 will hurt you for AMCAS. But is that cGPA by AMCAS or AACOMAS standards? If you've had multiple retakes and have gotten a decent grade at least once, your AACOMAS cGPA and sGPA might be higher than you think. Recalculate using your highest grade on your retakes and see what you get.

My concern for you would be that it's already June 28th. Have you started your application? Have your LORs together (specifically for medical school)? Is your PS written? Assuming you send out transcript requests on Monday you can assume they'd take until Friday to reach AMCAS/AACOMAS, then a few days for them to process. Then you're looking at 4-6 weeks for verification, which takes you into mid to late August for secondaries to get to you, and possibly into September before you've turned them all back around. By that point some schools have already started interviewing people ahead of you.

Not a problem for some people, and maybe not a concern for you, but it is something to keep in mind -- especially with a low c/s GPA. Would it be possible to keep your options open? Do you have a deferral option on the PA program where you could start in 2017 if a medical school push didn't work out?

Those numbers I provided are with retakes via AACOMAS. I'm only applying DO. As far as applying this year, not likely. Next year for sure. And I may defer PA for one year.

With some more work I can probably gain an acceptance if I can get to a cGPA of 3.0 and sGPA of 3.5. I just need to pick my route carefully.

With DO, there is no reason why you can't get to any GPA you want, just a matter of how much work you are willing to put in. I wouldn't personally think that 3.0 cum would be my end goal, i would at least wait till 3.3-3.4 before applying
 
Hi, I have a question on the grade placement. Should I retake all type of course including non-science classes or only science class as grade placement?

Replacement.

Start with the science courses so that you can raise both your cumulative and science GPAs.

The only science class I have is Intro bio and chem. Majority of the other classes are my non-science class since I'm not a science major.

Then you shouldn't retake anything, and should focus on your prerequisite courses.

With about a year of retakes, etc my cGPA will be at or slightly above 3.0 with a sGPA above 3.4.

3.0 is not a great or even good goal but considering my work schedule and finances, I will take a shot next year with my 2.9 or 3.0.
 
Hello. I posted in "What are my chances" But i'm thinking maybe this was a better thread to post to, since i didn't hear much feedback.
  • cGPA: 2.73
  • sGPA: 2.81 (according to AACOMAS- including repeats.)
  • GRE: Quant/Verbal 152/155
  • Spent 6 years at State school to get my BS in Nutrition. Graduated May 2015. Total Credits:189

what I'm wondering now is what the best step for me to take next is. I initially thought a postbac cert program or SMP might really help me as long as I do what it takes. But I'm starting to wonder if theres any SMP that will accept me as I am now. So now I'm thinking, maybe just some upper level courses at the state school, while scribing? If I retake about 7 science classes I can get my science gpa up to a 3.4. Would spending a year retaking courses look better, or starting a master's/taking grad classes look better? super confused. Any advice would be appreciated. Should I even bother applying to these programs that I've been looking at such as:

  • Keck Graduate Institute - Post bac premedical cert program
  • PCOM - MS in biomedical sciences (when I emailed them they were all about giving second chances so, that is why I thought I might have a shot)
  • Mississippi College- MS biomedical sciences
  • LECOM- Health Sciences Post Baccalaureate Program
