Just found out a simpler way of cutting the buccal and lingual walls of my proximal box and flattening the gingival floor: observe the straight fissure bur through the buccal and lingual embrasures, not occlusally with a mouth mirror. You might need the limber neck. shoulder and wrist joints of a contortionist to do this, but I find it easier to check the bur's inclination looking that way. You can also see if the bur is too close for comfort to the adjacent. Watch out for the axial wall though.

If you are using an Interguard, you will have to place it with the curled ends facing the adjacent.

Just thought I'd share...

what kind of finish line should we prep for full porcelain( should it be deep chamfer?)

Dear friends,

i m preparing for rt exam. i have some questions.... hope someone can help me out.

1. how to measure exact occlusal reduction? i m using wax pattern & trying to measure the thickness of wax on a,b,c plane but i still want more accurate method.
2. how do we measure incisal clearance on upper lateral incisor?
3. how to measure clearance on lingual surface of incisor & canine?
4. can examiners ask 3/4,7/8 or mod prep on # 5?
5. in class 2 composite, which bur should we use to put flare on f & l margins of box?

thanks in advance.

Hi, "RT Fraternity":

I have been reading the Board's criteria on tooth preps, and a question popped in my mind: Can I be graded down if my prep has "burn marks"--you know, like what happens when you cut a tooth with an overused carbide bur or if you (unintentionally) pressed too heavily with your handpiece? I know it would be silly of me not to remove them, but with the stress involved in the exam, that flaw could very easily be overlooked. Someone told me I'd fail if I present a prep with the brown burn marks, but the Board makes no mention of it in the criteria (or maybe I missed it). Any thoughts?

Thanks.

I really liked ur idea with silicone rubber pot holder but it is so difficult to get rubber pot holder from dollar mart. I tried three dollar marts but no one has it. can u tell me where else i can try . Thanks a lot for this idea
ivorinedust said:
Eureka!!!! It works! The silicone potholder I got from Dollar Tree and is 1.2 mm thick between the bulges(the bulges are about 20mm apart)--so I can cut a long and wide strip. I smear about 10 mm of the surface with ballpoint ink, place it on top of my occlusal reduction, ink side facing my prep, and let "Ahnold" bite down lightly then I tug on it. Voila! The ink transferred to the high spots on my lingual! Problem now is, if I grind down on the high spot, which is usually the lingual cusp tip, my lingual occlusal reduction gets a bit flat--and I lose the pretty slopes I tried so hard to cut :scared: ( I was doing # 4--full metal crown). Maybe that is how my typodont bites in centric. Oh well...

Another "test guage" you could probably use is the the Livestrong wrist band (2.00 mm). The cheaper knock off wrist bands at WalMart are 1.5 mm, so maybe you can use them too.

I think the best one to use is the 1.2 mm silicone pot holder, for three reasons:

-it is very flexible
-1.2mm is just about right: you can't reduce too much(>1.5mm) nor too little(<1.0mm)
-silicone holds ink very poorly--ink will transfer to the high points of the prep.

If anyone of you would try this, please post your results. And remember Ivorinedust thought of it

Hi rad_doc:

Try Dollar Tree. Find them potholders at the kitchen aisle. They are about 6 inch squares with raised bulges all around. You can use the material between the bulges, where it is 1.2 mm thick.

You can probably use the rubber wrist bands you find at quarter vending machines. I measured a niece's at 1.5mm, a bit too thick for safety. You might want to sand it down a bit. I am not sure if it is silicone though, so you may have to use more ink to smear the marking surface.

Just let your typodont "bite up" on your homemade flexible clearance guide with moderate pressure. Dragging the thing might cause a false registration on the buccal cusps. You can use a water-based felt tip pen to smear the marking surface.

A disclaimer: The homemade flexible clearance guide is not a guarantee that your occlusal reduction would be ideal. It is just a guide. You are the best judge of your prep (well, before the board examiners take a look at it )).

Pearson's will package your teeth individually in little zip lock style bags and then staple them together by number. That's nice. I am not sure if they carry Kilgore teeth (although they have the typodont), so it may be good to ask them. I buy my Columbia teeth from them. They'd ship your order right away and you'd receive it in a couple of days. Shipping could be expensive, though.

If you buy from Duggan's, they'd dump all your teeth in a sandwich bag and then it would be cumbersome for you to find the tooth you need, specially if you bought a few dozen of each tooth number since they are all mixed up. Last time I bought teeth from them, they were too busy because it was nearing exam time, and they had a ton of orders backed up. Took quite a while for my order to be filled and shipped. So if you want to buy from them, place your orders way before an exam weekend.

I don't know about UCLA, USC or UOP.

Hi all,
I went online to fill the WREB application.
On the second page of the application I was given a list of available dates and the Examination locations.

The check box beside the December exam to be held at Los Angeles is greyed out and it says 'Closed' beside it. I am not allowed to check the box.

Does this mean all the seats for the December exams are filled up and they wont allow anymore applications?

Your replies are greatly appreciated.

Thank you

yes that means they have received more applications than the spots available and even the allowed waitlist is also full. but keep looking, if it says "waitlist" , apply.in case you are not accepted for that partcular exam they will transfer for another exam or refund fully.

Hi All:

Just to remind all those interested to take the RT Exams anytime before Dec 31, 2008 (that means all of us who have not passed yet--unless you have changed your plans) have less than a month to file your application to the DBC. Applications should be filed by mail only by Sept 5, 2006. FYI. Thanks.

Do you guys suggest equilibrating your typodonts yourselves?...
Last Nov. I got 2 weeks notice for the exam due to somebody cancelled.
That wasn't enough time for me to get set (make arrangements for hotel, flight...) and equilibrate my typodont .(I was stress out and nervous) 😱
The day of the exam, proctors gave me the right away to started with the test. 👍 During the rubber dam part I realized that my contacts were too tight.(My rubber dam kept tearing off) :scared:
Even thought I got the equilibration ok, I don't wanna take any chances this coming opportunitty. 🙄
Im thinking of sending my typodont to get equilibrated. besides I'll use a kilgore typont this time.
Any suggestions or ideas?? :luck:

thanks

hi chiopea
I am sorry I can't help you,i still haven't take the exam, but would u please tell me we should use rubber dam in which preps during exam (all prep)?
if you have 2 typodont i think it's better you equiblibrate it by yourself now and practice on the other typodont,i think Duggan charge you about 200 for this !!

As far as i know the rubber dam is not required any more.
If you plan on using a kilgore and equilibrating it , pay attention to loose contacts since the kilgore have looser contacts than the columbia.

Hello,

I am the first timer applying for the RT exam. Could I download the forms online and filled it up? (I am not in the US).

Could you please instruct me how to fill the first box of the application form
- Original docs sent
- CM Receipt No.
- Docs returned unclaimed
- Docs resent

I am planning to seat for the exam next year. So could I fill the item "Preferred Examination Date" as April, 2007?

Thank you very much.

The Board will determine the "who, where and when" regarding the RT. I think they would prioritize that on the date of your Part II and on how many attempts you have already made on the exam. It would be good to check your preferences on the date and school anyway. Won't hurt.

I don't remember having filled out that box when I applied. I think it is for the Exam Committee/Office Staff to fill out. Everyone has already submitted their application for the first time in more than two years ago when the DBC set the first deadline. What happened to yours? The Sept 5 deadline is for the pool of candidates who were determined to be eligible after the first deadline. Anyway, good luck.

Hi.

I found out today that I can stabilize and control my handpiece better and supplement my finger rests by bracing my arm(the one I use with the handpiece, duh) and elbow against my belly. I never learned that in dental school  No book even mentioned it. Try and see if it works for you.

you must have very shaky hands 🙂 or very big belly.... 🙂
try to rest the other fingers on the teeth that you are not preparing.

The result of drinking too much beer in dental school--motor ataxia and deposition of excess adipose tissue around the abdominal area  I actually just tuck my arm to the side. Of course I still have my finger rests. Works for me specially if I do preps on the upper right quadrant. Thanks for that funny comment. That certainly eased my tension.

When is the DBC going to release or post the rules for the Restorative Technique Examination for Nov 2006??? 😴

Are we going to be lucky enough to have the measurement guidelines for the preps before the Nov. test??? 😕

I think each of us should contact the board ASAP and get some answers......

UOP is not as intensive as UCLA, according to some people I know. I heard the "mortality rate" from the UOP course is higher than UCLA. Not verified information, though.

I have one question regarding grooves for three quarter crowns, guys. The Schillingburg text advocates larger grooves for more retention, but someone who took the UCLA review course says that I should go smaller, like the diameter of a 169L bur for both molar and premolar preps. I am thinking of going with what a California dental school teaches(UCLA, that is) and make smaller grooves, but I'd like to hear what you guys think.

Thanks.

Hi Ivorine dust,

I got rubber pot holder which is 1.2mm like what u suggested.

I marked it with the marker and held the marked side towards me and let my typho bite it. After reduction itried to check it (c plane in#3). I didnt see any marks so i thought reduction is done.I took it out and checked it handheld but my reduction is nt complete.
I really appreciate if u could tell me how u checked it and where exactly u see
the marks.
