Hi Ivorine dust,

I got rubber pot holder which is 1.2mm like what u suggested.

I marked it with the marker and held the marked side towards me and let my typho bite it. After reduction itried to check it (c plane in#3). I didnt see any marks so i thought reduction is done.I took it out and checked it handheld but my reduction is nt complete.
I really appreciate if u could tell me how u checked it and where exactly u see
the marks.
HI THE BEST TECHNIQUE THAT I USED IN EXAM IS PUTTY BEFORE YOU PREP TAKE THE IMPRESSION THEN CUT IT IN HALF RIGHT AT THE MIDDLE (ONCE YOU HAVE REDUCED ENOUGH BY DOING DEPTH CUT) THEN CHECK IT WITH PUTTY PLACE THE PUTTY OVER THE PREPED TOOTH AND MEASURE IT WITH BALL BURNISHER

When is the DBC going to release or post the rules for the Restorative Technique Examination for Nov 2006??? 😴

Are we going to be lucky enough to have the measurement guidelines for the preps before the Nov. test??? 😕

I think each of us should contact the board ASAP and get some answers......

regards,
MET DAWN TWO DAYS AGO,, NOV EXAM THERE WILL 500 SEATS 250 IN ucla OR usc (YES I DID SAY UCLA NOT CONFIRMED THOUGH ) THE REST 250 WILL BE IN UOP,,SHE ASSURED ME THAT 5 OF THE EXAMINER HAS BEEN SACKED FROM SOUTHERN CAL ,,PUT IT THIS WAY THAT THE EXAMINERS ARE FOR STUDENTS NOW .THEY ARE GOING TO MIX THE EXAMINERS FROM SOUTHERN CAL AND NORTHERN CAL SO GRADING WILL BE PRETTY UNIFORMED SHE ASSURED ME ALSO OF A HAND BOOK THAT WILL BE PUBLISHED IN DBC WEBSITE RIGHT NOW IT IS ON DESK OF THE BOARD MEMBERS,AS SOON IT IS APPROVED WE WILL GET THE MEASUREMENT OFTHE PREPS,
THERE ARE A LOT OF STUDENTS 1ST TIMERS WHO HAVE GIVEN PART 2 EXAMS RECENTLY HAVE APPLIED FOR BENCH EXAM THINKING THAT THEY ARE ELIGIBLE SINCE FILING PERIOD IS OPEN SO THERE ARE A LOT OF FILES THAT NEED TO BE SENT BACK !!
PRIORITY IS STILL 1ST TIMERS ( APPROX 40-50 ) FOURTH TIMERS VERY FEW THIRD TIMERS IS THE LARGEST BUNCH (ABOUT 100 OR SO ) THE SECOND TIMERS IS LARGEST POOL IF YOU HAVE GIVEN EXAMS IN FEB OF 2003 YOU PERCENT OF CHANCE FOR THIS EXAM IS 20 %-30%
DONT LOOSE HOPE KEEP YOUR FINGERS CROSSED

Use a water based felt tip pen. Do not use a Sharpie. The marked side faces the occlusal your prep. It also helps to cut the material a little less than the M-D dimension of the tooth you are prepping. You can taper it it bit if you like. Then insert the guide from the buccal.

Marking the functional cusp bevel on #3 is tricky, but it will make a mark if your reduction is less than 1.2. Be sure to insert the guide all the way past the palatal side of the tooth, and check that it does not touch the occlusals of the adjacent unprepared teeth. This is why you want to cut it narrower than the M-D of your prep.

Also make sure that the rest of the teeth appear to be in occlusion as you close the typodont. That means you might have to close the typodont harder. I sometimes do a "tap-tap-tap" while moving the guide a bit, just to make sure the prep contacts the inked surface. If it doesn't mark, you should have 1.2 mm clearance. If it marks only on the cusp tip and ridges, do not reduce it right away. It could be a false registration. I reduce only the marked slopes and very minimally on the cusp ridges and tips.

I would prefer to use this method since it won't be as time consuming as blu-mousse--you'd know how you are doing with your reduction in an instant. That is pretty convenient if you have to check and recheck it a few times during the exam. Although blu mousse is more reliable, it involves a couple of minutes waiting time, and then you have to slice it sagitally or whatever, then measure with a perio probe or RGS. It also involves a few more things which can clutter your work area. And the best part-- the pot holder only costs a dollar

Making a putty stint before prepping as Bansu suggested is an excellent method and, I would use it as an adjunct to verifiy what is registered on my clearance guage. This is because "reduction" and "clearance" are two different things. For example, if you reduced a surface by 1.5mm, but before prepping there was already an existing clearance of about. 0.7(as in the case of occluso-distals of #19 or #30 ) you would have over reduced that portion of the tooth already. Check any typodont, even the equilibrated ones, and you are likely to find existing clearances on the distal between #14 and #19 and #3 and #30. If you use a clearance guide, then you would not reduce that more than necessary.

Guys, I'm sorry if I sound like a "know-it-all", but I have been "immersing" myself for the last three years with this exam like my life depended on it 😳 Like you, I've invested countless hours and thousands of dollars on it. Having very little to spend, I look for ways to make this struggle easier.

Hope this helps, rad_doc. PM me if you need more.

Bansu, thanks for the update! I look forward to seeing that RT Exam handbook in the DBC website. With regard to measurements, I heard that the Board would like to see more reduction. How true?

Ivorinedust.

Hi:

Suppose a DO amalgam prep is assigned on #19 or #30. Is is safe to do a "cusp capping", that is, removing the whole distal cusp on the cavity prep in the exam? What do Stevenson, Duggan and Thaw say about this? Are the board examiners expecting to see this design if they assigned a 19/30 DO? Or do we stick with the standard 0.5mm distobuccal clearance? I think this issue should be clarified in the upcoming "handbook" by DBC. What do you think? Thanks.

Hi,

I have a few queries regarding the RT,

1. In the April '06 exam, I heard that the manikin movement was restricted.
If so, what are the limitations?
2. Those who have selected Kilgore typodont over Colombia, what prompted
you to do so inspite of the class 2 prep getting complicated.
3. What is the best way to correct damage on adjacent tooth?

Ivorine dust, your method for measuring occlusal clearance works for #3, what is the best way to measure the 1mm C plane clearance in #19,30.

Thanks in advance.

i am interested in joining a course to prepare us for the practical exam a the ca schools.

I know we are all wondering how many people have sent their applications to the board. The last time I called they said since the filing period is still open they get some applications every day. Also some people who are not on the initial master list are sending applications. Those new applications have been put aside but they still dont have a final count on how many have filed. BUT WE NEED TO KNOW HOW MANY HAVE APPLIED SO THAT WE CAN ASSESS OUR INDIVIDUAL CHANCES OF BEING PICKED PICKED FOR THE TEST. IS there a way we can start some way of counting who all have applied (Bench hopefuls). If you also add in your attempt #,and the last time you took your bench I would be happy to calculate the probablity. According to the board first priority will be given to those who are taking it for the first and final time. For the rest it will be based on when you took the exam the last time. So if you have been waiting for some time you are likely to be picked. There is one more exam in November apart from the one at USC. that makes it 500 slots approx.

Hi, Im planning going down to the UCLA for the mock board on saturday the 16th & 17th. If some Rt female candidate wanna share a room next to the UCLA FOR THE UPCOMING MOCK BOARD please contact me.😛

I have Dr Duggan equilibrated Kilgore typodont ,which is ready for use in exam and kilgore teeth at real good price.PM me for details.

Hi is your typhodont sold or still having if so please give details.
Thanks.
I have material to sell, including kilgore in the box.
By the way, I took classes at UCLA and also sent my typo equilibration and work for Dr. Stevenson to check. It was my salvation.I do recomend his class.
Good luck to you all

Hi:

How do you position your mannequin and yourself when cutting the lingual chamfer on #8,9,6 and 11?

I stay at 12 o'clock and tilt the mannequin about 30 degrees to the floor, and use indirect vision with a lighted mouth mirror. I find it difficult to refine the margin this way because of the confusing orientation, but I assume that I might overcome this with diligent practice.

I tried direct vision with the mannequin in supine position parallel to the floor, myself at 8 o'clock, but find it even harder to effectively move the handpiece to cut my margins. After about ten minutes of doing this, my neck and shoulders ache, too! Is there an easy way to do this? What do you guys do? Your replies greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Golden Gate Dental has closed. The owner retired. It is now replaced by SF Dental supply, run by friendly Filipino businesspeople. Met the guy Henry recently, and he is super. Their store moved to 437 Rozzi Place #102 in So. SAn Francisco. 1-888-283-8189 or (650)877.8183. If you are anywhere near San Francisco, they might deliver your order for free, but I don't know the minimum order required for that.

I am leaning towards buying the perioptix for $595 but havent decided. PM me the brand and specifications for the one you are considering.
Thanks

Hi everybody!!

I just wanted to sugest to call or write to the DBC to request the information they promised to give us (at the meeting at UOP, remember?) about the measurements (dimensions) and characteristics of all the preps. A guy told me he had called and they told him they will send that information only to those candidates who request it. I tried to talk to someone yesterday but I couldn't; I just got the answer machine. The exam is coming soon and again we are all wondering what course is the best to take (Stevenson, Duggan, UOP, De Leon, etc?), because each of them teaches differently and what exactly the DBC is looking for nobody knows. If they don't put the information in a paper, chances are that the examiners will continue giving grades that you may not deserve. Are they now aware that there are huge differences between Columbia and Kilgore typodonts?

Ok, please keep posting any news. Thank you to all. :luck:

Can anyone tell me the procedure to apply for wreb after completing RT exam? What i did before is that i applied using the application provided by dbc website.i got a letter back from them saying that they need the original wreb score card.this sounded funny for me cause i was applying for wreb.how can i give them a score card when i did not complete the exam.can anyone who previosly applied for wreb after RT explain this to me.

I use a headband lamp that is much better than the standard LED light. I use a 3 watt Luxeon LED headlight. It runs on 3 AAA batteries enclosed in case which rests on your occiput. It's also great to use when you ride your bicycle at night🙂

If you need a headlight, see to it that it has a Luxeon LED Bulb. It is the second generation LED and is really worth the money. These bulbs have a burn time of 10,000 hours and run for about 8 hours continuous on regular AAA batteries. They also don't get hot.

FYI, late model composite curing lights use Luxeon bulbs, so it makes sense to turn your headlight off if you are packing composite, although I really doubt if it will cause immediate polymerization from a distance.

While at Wal-Mart, you might want to check out the lighted mouth mirror at the dental care aisle. It is made by GUM and comes with a "scaler" and "explorer" tip--well at least there is a resemblance. It'll cost you $4.50 or so.
The light is regular LED and batteries are disc-type, like those for hearing aids. That makes the mouth mirror light (in weight, pun not intended). Be sure to peel off the protective film covering the mirror or you'd think something is wrong with your loupes.

Hope that helps.

Hi
I tried occlusal reduction of lower molar. c plane is difficult to measure.can anyonne suggest how to measure c plane of 19 and 30 . with putty it is difficult to measure the clearance and with the wax it is never right.may be i am doing something wrong. Thaw says to mmeasue with wax i.e to cut it in the center of c plane so that u can see how much u have cut. duggan says to see in the light to see htickness. putty shows reduction but not clearance so it is always overreduced. really appreciate any suggestions .

hi thanks a lot for all the input... could u also tell me where did u buy the headband from?

http://www.dbc.ca.gov/2006_rt_changes.html

the rules for the nov exam, are out and it looks like they just changed april to nov... when we had gone for the meeting.. they had said that either amalgum prep 60% and fill 40% and in that case composite prep 100% but now in the rules they don't mention the amalgum filling, and they have also included 7/8th again....😕
so i don't know... i guess just to be safe practise the amalgum fill too, after all that's the easier part of a class 2

Try the larger sporting goods houses like REI and Big 5. These headlights are used for hiking and spelunking(cave exploring). Be sure you are getting a headlight with LUXEON bulbs, not ordinary LEDs. It might be hard finding a 3 watt lamp, but 1 watt would probably be good. I got mine a long time ago, when Luxeons were just coming out of the market. That is why it was harder to find 3 watt. Try if these stores if they have it.

Rad:

See Dr. Phan's discussion on occlusal clearance vs occlusal reduction on "tips on tooth preparations" thread. BTW If you use wax, you tend to pull and stretch it when you open the typodont, so it is not really reliable, specially if you use sticky utility wax.
