I am trying to help a good friend get back into the game of applying to medical school, and looking to guide her toward the best post-bacc's or SMP's for URM students. She is Native American and Indigenous Mexican-American. She has completed all the pre-med pre-reqs, so no carer changers.

Thank you!

I would look in Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas state schools. They would have the strongest missions to recruit students from your friend's background. I dont know any specific programs though

It depends on where she is from

First question to ask is does she even need an SMP......as a URM if her GPA is around what most SMP matriculants are(3.1-3.3) she likely can be competitive to MD programs without one.

Do a search in the post-bacc forum. There are specific post-baccs for URMs and the like that exist, but I really dont know much about them at all.

All of them. Seriously the sky is the limit. URM gives you a significant advantage in this process.

So if a URM applicant has a 3.2 GPA or so, what do you think the MCAT would need to be to apply to medical school without an SMP? She is having a hard time believing she can get in without a program.

percentile equivalent to 25+ on the old mcat. You could almost definitely get in with a 27. I know some URMs with similar gpas and an mcat like that who have gotten into top schools

Wow that's so great to know. She is retaking two classes and I am sure it will put her science GPA well above 3.2.

Best SMP, hands down. is BU MAMS. The advising, the educational experience, the faculty, the mission of the school, inclusion and diversity. Enough said.

I think that the value of an SMP is generally related to its acceptance rates, but I also agree that these things should also be considered.

Well the best SMP is the one that gets the most amount of its grads into US MD schools. That by definition is Temple and Tulane hands down.

Ive never seen any verifiable stats on what % of Boston U MAMS grads get into US MD schools(not any med school). Cincinnati's is the only one I know with verifiable stats.

Those programs are great. I know of someone that did the temple one. All those programs have great linkage. But i'm telling you, if i were you, i would do MAMS... you wont regret it. It's an intensive program and everyone ends up succeeding very well in medical school. I already had an ms going in, but do not regret doing this program one bit. I'm confident I will be accepted one day, and when I am, I'm pretty sure I will shine in the preclinical years. The rigor of the program forces you in teaching you how to study and understand the material on a really deep level. It's humbling, challenging, and transformative. It'll be the hardest year of your life, but as challenging it is, it is rewarding.

They also have a research pubmed article that was recently published about Mams. Check it out.
