A recent study concluded that 25% of NFL players that died between 2016 and 2021 had CTE. 25%! The really of this is why I think football will decline.
The money is too good. I know a lot of people still pushing their children to play knowing the risk of CTE. Of course, their loved one will be in the 75% allegedly without CTE. Personally, I stopped watching or supporting the sport, but I am definitely in the minority.

If my kid wanted to play football, I wouldn't let him for this reason. I don't know how much the general public knows about CTE, however.

I just noticed that our electricity bill has gone up ~31% from 2024 to 2026. Is this happening in other parts of the country?
Trumpflation

Its what happens when he cancels renewable contracts, spends money to keep more expensive derelict coal plants going, tariffs, and the rest of his brilliant economic policies

Dont worry though, you can cash that DOGE check or the $5000 midterm check..

I would not mind having the 5k + 5k checks for my household. I DGAF anymore because both parties will NEVER take care of the debt/deficit.

I just read a NYT article that says the EPA is about to roll back ALL restrictions on coal power plants.

Yes this is why liberal cities are affordable places to live and people are not leaving all the most liberal states

Maybe they can all head to Florida, where gubernatorial candidate Bobby Williams says maternity leave is a socialist concept and he knows ‘many, many, many women who had a baby and went to work the next day’. That’s what we should be.

Ok but what was said was that one party wants neo-serfdom and the other doesn’t. I pointed out the biggest part of what serfdom is in liberal cities and the motivation it creates to leave those places.

Besides, isn’t Byron Donald’s running for governor there?

This is such an intellectually dishonest argument. There are no “liberal” and “conservative” states. Only states that have more urban population and states that have less. The divide in this county isn’t blue or red states, it’s urban vs rural. Blue and red states are a product of their urban vs rural makeup.

Liberals are more concentrated around city centers where people have money and housing is more expensive.

Conservatives are more concentrated around rural areas where people tend to be poorer and housing is cheap.

Liberals aren’t moving from blue states to red states. They are moving from expensive blue cities to cheaper blue cities.

Tokyo, Vienna, and Shanghai don’t have this problem. Housing prices in Dallas, Houston, and Austin are falling. Florida getting cheaper as well. Other places in Europe and Asia do. It’s administration dependent.

It’s a liberal city problem, caused by liberal city governance.

Trust me, this guy is no Trump fan. He’s more liberal than Ezra Klein.

There are very much liberal states too. What you’re saying is flatly wrong. Regulations in California and Massachusetts are not even the same galaxy as in Texas and North Carolina.

Population migration is secondary to opportunity and governance. It’s the best proof of good governance we have and the best part of the federalist system. People vote w their feet.

Financialization of housing and regulation of housing are the big drivers of impossible living in cities. NYC and San Fran are woefully underbuilt relative to their size. We’ve also financialized our housing. China is severely financialized as well, but at least builds a lot to capacity. Tokyo has neither problem.

Why can’t they afford it, they’re not supposed to be serfs in liberal cities right?
Because everyone wants to live in the nice locations.

They could afford it if more people wanted to live in the less desirable red states.

Supply and demand.

Better question, is why Texas and Florida basically have to bribe people to move there if its so great?

Not anybody cares about the scandals, but even aside from the Russian connection, if the Trump‘s are so rich why is anybody being rolling junior‘s wedding?

I believe you are misinformed. I have been to Texas several times and know many Texans. The majority of citizens there wish everyone from California would go back. People in California can sell their 1200 sq ft home in California and pay cash for a 3000-4000 sq ft home in parts of Texas. I have never heard of anyone being bribed. They do attract large successful companies there with favorable economic policies.

Spot on analysis. Even California and Texas are largely urban vs rural.

I'm assuming "bribe" was in reference to lower taxes, especially income taxes.

I think you misunderstand how the cost of living relates to how desirable it is to live there.

The main reason that California has areas with very expensive housing, is because of supply and demand. Coastal areas have very limited land and are highly sought after.

Texas can offer (bribe) with low income taxes and cheap housing but they cant compete with the nicer areas of California in terms of demand.

They attract successful companies because the companies can pay their employees less in Texas, so it helps there bottom line.

Of course people in Texas dont want Californians there. If Californians come to Texas and drive up property values, then Texans will lose one of the only reasons worth living there.

I think you’re missing the supply part of that equation.

As I mentioned, Tokyo doesn’t have the capacity problems American liberal cities have. Plenty of demand in Tokyo.

Why isn’t there enough supply in those coastal cities?

Thats easy.

No land available.

Have you been to the coastal cities in So Cal? An empty plot of land alone can run millions

Combine that with California coastal cities historical opposition to multifamily, high density (although thats changing)

You could buy an empty plot of lan in Texas for dirt cheap

If that is what you meant, why did you use the term bribe? That is absolutely a misrepresentation of an area that has a lower cost of living. Why not just say they are moving there because of a lower cost of living. You used obfuscation and subterfuge to describe it as sinister. Not surprising, but I can't let it go unaddressed.

Tokyo cost per sq foot:
Central Tokyo - $1,000 to $2,000+
General area - $500 to $750
Suburbs - $350 to $450

San Diego average $671
San Francisco median $1,070
Chicago average $288
Austin average $320
Miami average $530
Dallas average $250
Kansas City average $177

There are no McMansions or huge yards in Tokyo, are there?

Not really.

The term "bribe" was used in a figuratively not literally.

You could use the term incentive if you want. In effect, its the same thing.

If someone moves to Texas solely for political reasons or the food or family, sure. But as you said, most go there for the financial incentive. So if a state needs financial incentives (via lower taxes than national average) then the natural conclusion is that its inherently a less desirable area.

In California, you can charge people more taxes, cost of living is MORE expensive and demand is still sky high in the nice areas.

Not sure why people get sensitive about it. I can understand that Aspen is a very desirable place to live. More desired than Big Bear for example. Does that mean i want to pay extra to live there? Nope. If i was rich and money was no object, then for sure i would much rather have a house there than in Aspen.

I promise you. If you offered the same identical house and cost of living to Texans, to move to coastal So cal. There would be a flood of applications

California is expensive because it is mountainous terrain with few livable areas on the coast, it’s very pretty/temperate, and the economy there is very robust.

I guess the governments there could work really hard to start creating more high density housing, but that’s not really what people are talking about when they are wanting to live somewhere long term in this country.

I say this as a transplant from California that now lives in a cheap blue city in a purple state. California is expensive for terrain and just straight up desirability in the setting of very good jobs. It’s not my cup of tea, but blaming politics on the situation seems very misinformed.

Edit: Not all of California is the Bay Area/LA. Move to the Central Valley where there’s land and the weather sucks and you’ll find it’s plenty cheap…just nobody wants to live there.

I understand that people like to live on the coast or near water. That does not change the fact that you intentionally misrepresented cost of living as bribery. Why are you doubling down?

Because its a bit funny that you are particularly sensitive about that word...when in reality, there is no difference in regards to the citizen migration.

Paying someone 10000 to move there, like they do in many cities....https://www.tulsaremote.com/

Or paying them via tax credits, tax rebates, lower taxes, low cost loans, any number of different offers...is all in effect the same thing. You are giving financial benefits to convince someone to do something they wouldn't otherwise do.

But tell me, if i said that i bribed someone with a cheap house to move to Texas vs incentive them with a cheap house...whats the actual difference?

Or if i bribed a senator to vote yes versus i gave him a cash incentive to vote yes... does the word "incentive" make it kosher?

Guess who determines opposition to high density housing in San Francisco and follows through on the legal structures around it?

Plenty of space in San Fran for massive high rise towers.

No (liberal) political will.

That’s my point. It’s a question of policy, not impossibility.

Even your own gubernatorial candidates admit that it’s a governance problem. Just take the L dude.

Property tax in Texas is some of the highest in the country. Are you this misinformed, really? Or is it just partisanship?

One of the most beautiful states. I would live in LA or SF if I had money.

Trying to go to San Diego in a few weeks for a mini stay.

Can make $30-40k/week with a reasonable workload doing locums in the Central Valley. Still not enough to get people to move there from the coast.

That’s the neat part in California regarding the government doing the work to create housing, they can’t!

The best encapsulation of the terrible governance in California is that it costs the government FOUR TIMES the money to create a unit of affordable housing in California compared to private builders.

Yeah, people always ask me if I would move back. My answer is usually “If you handed me $5M so I could isolate myself from the people/traffic and actually live on the water, I’d consider it. Until then, I like where I’m at.”

I’ve lived in the Central Valley. It’s an armpit. I’d rather live in Ohio or Oklahoma and it’s not even close. Living in the Central Valley is all the fun of Arizona weather with the amenities of your local major interstate rest area.

Rich local people control the local housing.

High rise living is also very expensive

Yup.

Thats because it costs money to pay for labor Because California actually pays their workers here

I have to disagree. Texas has had no state income tax for as long as I remember. Property taxes are higher. And Texas isn't uniquely - 9 states here no income taxes, including Washington.

Relocation is expensive, and a person with a job offer has to weigh all the pros and cons. No state income tax is only one factor in the calculus. I doubt it's the deciding factor for most people. To call it bribery is ridiculous.

Let's take your Tulsa example. There's probably rules and restrictions, and most people aren't relocating unless there are other reasons to be there. Sure, if I wanted to move to Oklahoma, it might be appealing. But who in tf what's to move to OK? Not many. I hate driving across Oklahoma. It's mostly flat and boring.
