For the first question, how would you distingish between a desmosome and a gap junction?

Desmosome-for mechanical strength, gap for cellular communication...

A desmosome, also known as macula adherens or macula adherentes (Latin: adhering spot), is a cell structure specialized for cell-to-cell adhesion.
I think the 1st one is Desmosomes.

Jo07, I think you're confusing desmosomes with plasmodesmata.
