i am just starting but have been trying to chronicle my journey thus far.

Any good websites or blogs I can check out for non traditional pre meds?

I've gotten bitched at for linking to them before, but whatever. They're big girls and they write good blogs. OldMDGirl is doing the research portion of her MD/PhD, so she's currently more active. Ella is deep in the trenches of her preclinical years, but has more activity that you might find interesting from a year or so ago. Look through her archives.

I am reading it too and thank you

I always liked Panda Bear. He doesn't write anymore, but was always very blunt and outspoken.

One word of warning, however. He did get very political towards the end of his blog, and that's coming from someone who agrees with his politics for the most part.

Most of the blogs I follow aren't non-trad I guess.

There are a couple people I'd like to see write blogs...Q and VC7777, and eventually EAB *hint* *hint*

I've read OldMDGirl and enjoyed that.

I've read http://drnjbmd.wordpress.com/

I stumbled across Medically Blonde awhile ago, and there were some posts that really cracked me up. http://shesmedicallyblonde.wordpress.com/

Mother's in Medicine is another one I just came across. Not all non-trads but I think people here will still be able to relate a bit.

Im a fan of MDgirl. Also these two are full of great examples of what to do and what not to do!:

getting in to med school: http://2medschool.blogspot.com/
failing out of med school: http://6medschool.blogspot.com/

Damn those are sad blogs on the whole. Guy has three, an application blog, an attending blog, and a dismissal blog. Tough reading (but a frequent meme around here any time the Caribbean schools are brought up - there's a reason they claim the residency match statistics they do: because they wash out a high number of matriculants.)

exactly! I don't know if I should be doing this, but this is exactly why I warn people away from Carrib pretty much any time it comes up, and I often link this blog. I don't really know if there is ever a good reason to go carrib - maybe there is, I honestly dont know.

BUt I cant think of one...

maybe if you have so much money and time that it doesnt matter if you wash out...?

His blog is sooo sad. I am scared for me, and I am thinking what I have I gottten myself into?

oops - are you in carrib? hehe, don't mean to sound totally hopeless and nihilistic. Of course, there are people who get through it and graduate, its just tough. If this is your situation, then I genuinely wish you good luck. If its not your situation, then don't let it be!

those links above were really informative. It gives me a detailed information regarding non-traditional medicine 🙂

Man, I just read his update from today... I feel for this guy, but he's an idiot.

This guy wants to tack on more debt by trying to be readmitted, even given the fact that he will have a 0% chance of matching. Unbelievable.

Surprised no one has mentioned "Ah yes, medical school"
http://ahyesmedschool.blogspot.com/

I'm not a blog reader, but I've read every one of this guys entries. By far the most entertaining and sobering blog I've seen. Even better than PandaMD's, imo.

Good call - ah yes is a GREAT blog - its totally hilarious. I havent read it all, but yeah, really entertaining. The only thing is that it looks like the blog is dead- no update for like a few months/a year right? too bad.

Oh also, I hear what you are saying about the carrib guy. I hesitate at you calling him an idiot just because... i guess just because I feel for him too haha. I hope it works out for him, I really do. Having said that, yes, if I were him I would probably be looking for a different line of work.

Yeah, there were a couple of spin offs, "ah yes, residency" and "ah yes, health policy" but they seem to have fizzled out, unfortunately. He's got to be an attending or fellow by now.

By the way, I just noticed what your avatar is... Great show!

Also, I humbly submit a blog that I write (linked below). I try to keep it spicy 🙂

I do not predict a good outcome for this guy. If he does get into another medical school, there is little chance that he will pass the boards, and if he does I do not suspect he will have an easy time at getting into a residency. He has 3 major strikes against him already

Strike 1: Caribbean school. they put out lots of graduates but only a small percentage get into residencies right away.

Strike 2: Repeated 1 semester/1 year of medical school

Strike 3: Failed out of a Caribbean medical school.

If this guy plans to succeed he should spend more time studying and reviewing and less time writing his blog and filming bugs in his apartment. This guy is going to wind up in some medical school in Mexico, Poland, south Pacific, where ever but he is just going to keep pissing money away.

Does not bode well for him.

I think a lot of med students don't really appreciate how totally useless an MD or DO without a residency actually is until they are in the position of being stuck without a residency.
I do feel for that guy. It has to be devastating to get kicked out of med school after working towards the goal for years and wracking up debt. However, if I were advising him, I would strongly recommend looking at PA school rather than trying another Caribbean school.

Just found this blog the other night. It wasn't around when I was going through the pre-med process, and it's got a lot of great reality in it. Nice to read blog posts from mothers at various stages of the process.

http://www.mothersinmedicine.com

I should mention that I am in no way affiliated with the site - just happen to be a mother in medicine and this site is awesome.

yeah, found that awhile ago. even though i'm not a mom it's definitely an interesting site. there are some really good posts on there.

So, I totally missed this comment, sorry WH! Um, yeah...I tried it, but it just wasn't for me. I couldn't strike the right balance of talking about my school, my experience, etc, which is all pretty unique and making it generally useful to others or engaging and candid enough. So, I gave up pretty quickly. I tried! 🙁

Tis ok. Somehow based on your posts on here I think you're probably being too critical of yourself. But blogging isn't for everyone. Just glad you're a regular on here so I can get my CCLCM fix once in awhile, since I've already read CCLCMer's entire blog 😳

yeah, it's strange how some of his advice is fairly solid but his performance was so bad. Ross is on the accelerated plan (they do about 2 years of school in 16 months), so maybe it was a bit too fast for him?

Maybe his studying is negligent? Learning disability ? ****, i felt terrible after getting through many of his posts.

I scrolled through right quick and didn't see panda bear's blog listed. It should be mandatory reading!

studentdoctor.net/pandabearmd

Also Dr. Au is really good, theunderweardrawer.blogspot.com.

My blog is also incredibly awesome but I don't talk about medicine much.

I love this thread.....

One of you go-getters should make a semi-complete list so Q can add it to the sticky FAQ 🙂

I already have this thread linked to the sticky, but you're right; it would be nice to have it organized better. I can do that. Good idea. 🙂

Edit: All right, here is the official Nontrad blog roll. Let me know if you find some others that you'd like to be added.

Well done!

I purposefully worded it such that the implication was someone else should make the list and you just put it up...you do so much on these forums as it is.

Thanks (from everyone I'm sure) for taking the time 🙂.

My friend, the only "someone else" who might have done the job based on your suggestion was you. 😉

Got PMed another premed blog that I will add to the list.

I have been a non-traditional pre-medical student for over a year now, but I just now found and hopped on the "blog" bandwagon.

I used to hate the word "blog". But now after reading others' and starting my own, I think I am hooked! Link is in my signature.

I am a stay at home mom with a daughter who just turned 10 months. I am pursuing my education toward med school and eventually a career as a family physician. I write about the process as a mom who is going to be a nontraditional student.

momandmed.tumblr.com

I just started a non-trad post-bacc blog myself (in my signature). Not too much there yet as I just started, but hey!

🙂 Thanks for all the other blogs. I love reading non-trads' journeys.

So I have been having a hard time keeping my love of the sciences alive in this medical school curriculum and I imagine that others find it hard to appreciate the knowledge that is being dumped on them as well.

My answer to keeping my passions alive and balance in my life is a project that I started with one mission:

The mission is to promote healthy well-being through compassion, humility and balance by understanding ones mind, body and soul.

It explores the molecular biology of the human body and links (loosely, literally and figuratively) it to our general well-being.

The website: healthywellbeinginitiative.wordpress.com

The goal is to help people maintain balance and passion for medicine while they go through this crazy training. I hope it will help you if you need it.

Nice work, Chem. I like it. Well, what self-respecting science nerd wouldn't? 👍 😀

I will add all of the new contributions to the sticky today or tomorrow. If anyone else has a blog they'd like added, please post it here. Other health professionals besides medicine (pharm, dent, nursing, allied health, etc) also welcome to contribute.

Edit: all right, all of them are added. Thanks for contributing, everyone.

Thanks, Q!

some nice links!

I have thought about making a blog before, but I never do it. I know how to make websites, I could do up a nice looking blog or site, but I don't know if I would really devote the time.

I have one: www.speculativespeculum.com

I'm a mom of three who is starting organic chemistry next semester and taking the MCAT at the end of March. I want to go into OB. 😎

I added Sho Tyme's blog to my list. It looks like I will be stalking him for a while since we have made similar progress in our pre-med journey!

Hey SS... No need to stalk me. Just come hang out awhile. 😀
