Hey everybody. I am new in here and also new in dentistry. Just a freshman yet. Can someone please tell me the books you think every dentist or dentistry student should have? (If there is any) I am not only talking about the books for the end exams, I want to know about the dentistry related books generally. Thanks.

Hi I have about 12 dental txt books in total- all of them either prescribed or highly recommended books for the dental course at our university.
I think must-have books are
1. Prosthodontic treament for edentulous patients:by Zarb and Bolender
2. Fundamentals of periodontics: by Wilson and Kornman
3. Contemporary fixed prosthodontics: by Rosenstiel, Land and Fujimoto
These are classic and I reckon every dentist should have these..

Other ones you might consider are
1. Harty' endodontics in clinical practice
2. Contemporary oral & maxillofacial surgery
3. Fundamentals of operative dentistry

And please avoid the series of blue-covered books from the Oxford university press. They are a waste of money (I hope im not alone in this respect!)

Freshman huh? I would concentrate on the undergrad degree first and try to get as high marks as possible at this stage. Some materials will be hard to fathom without systematic learning and luckily you're not expected to know anything about dentistry in great detail from the start!

Good luck future colleague👍

i take it he meant a freshman in dental school....at least i hope so...lol

Yeah, sorry my fault. I am a first year Dentistry student. I am not in pre-dent.

A few more "classics" here that seem to end up in many dentist's libraries over the years:

Management of the Medically Compromised Patient by Little and Falace

The Handbook of Local Anesthesia by Malamed

Carranza's Clinical Periodontology by Neary

Pathways of the Pulp by Cohen and Hargreaves

Contemporary Orthodontics by Proffit

Functional Occlusion by Dawson

Management of Tempormandibular Disorders and Occlusion by Okeson

Dental Implant Prosthetics by Misch

Oral and Maxillofacial Infections by Topazian and Goldberg

Also check out Malamed's book on medical emergencies in the dental office.

Oral radiology by white and pharoah is good too.

Tx planning in dentistry by Stefanac

netters head and neck anatomy for dentistry

on and on.... 🙂

Don't forget "Seven Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. Begin with the end in mind, baby!

Oh the places you'll go by Dr. Seuss

I like Ten Cates oral histology book, but i doubt you will use this after part I...

Carranzas perio book is 4 inches of pure boredom...j/k, but it is 4 inches. Sorry to rain on your book Dr. Jeff😀

Another one that looks good is the new Netters Head and Neck Anatomy book for Dentistry by Norton.

Again, not sure how much it will be used after part I but it is small and concise and looks useful.

I made a list of all Temples first year books here.

Look at Paul Homoly's books/cds, howie horrocks books, frank spears dvd's, the tip edge guide.
Books aren't the only way to learn.

angels and demons and the da vinci code are pretty good 🙂

medical problems in dentistry by scully is a must especially for practicing dentists.
