yeah I got rejected. I'm from PA, and I think they didn't take me in just because of residency requirement.

I was complete on August 13. I submitted my application on August 10 I think. Also, I am a Canadian applicant.

I heard somewhere that BU strives for the average stats and reject the two ends, don't know if there is any truth in that.

Probably not that puzzling, if you don't have any ties to the area they're probably assuming that you will get into and go somewhere better and don't want to be anyone's safety school.

I agree. But, its unfortunate sometimes since people really may have an affinity for a school and have scores above their averages and get rejected. I guess a letter of intent might be helpful in that case?

I posted earlier that a friend of mine interviewed at BU last year and the person he interviewed told him that if he'd had one point higher on the MCAT he would most likely not have gotten an interview unless he wrote a LOI. I guess they want to take people that more or less have them as their top choice, which makes some sense. No one wants to be a backup.

I too got rejected post-secondary (my first rejection as well). Then again, I didn't do the optional "any special interest in BU or Boston" essay question, so I guess that's my fault.

I don't think he was suggesting that anyone with a 34 or higher would be rejected w/o a LOI but that applicants with his profile with a point higher MCAT would be rejected w/o LOI.

hmm... So is anyone writing an LOI, and if so, how? I emailed their MPH guy with some questions about the program, but I bet admissions doesn't see it... does it have to say, "I am interested in your school, please interview me?" Or can you just ask some questions about the school and indirectly show interest that way?

Well, my stats are somewhat average. My GPA is 3.70 (Electrical Engineering), 3.95 BPCM, and 30 O (10, 10, 10).

still rejecting quality candidates pre-interview isn't a great idea. I mean if you are going to interview 10x the number of people you are going to accept anyways, at least give the guy a chance, if his interest isn't genuine, then go ahead with rejections.

I feel like this is just based on personal experience. If you look at mdapplicants (assuming the data is correct) people were accepted with a 40, 35, 38, 37 even 29. I think it expands throughout the spectrum (or rather HOPE haha).

It certainly could be, as it's simply hearsay, but what's the risk in writing a letter of interest if you're really interested in going there?

Well BU/GWU have the most apps of any school, which is why they probably want to interview people that seem like they really want to go there.

I feel like writing an LOI prior to interviewing could be premature because then you can't use it to push the envelope after you interview. But I'm still waiting for an interview and this could be my alternative. We'll see.

There's no law against sending multiple LOIs, especially since people in school should certainly have something to update, like fall semester grades.

I was just invited for an interview, my first. Sorry, I don't remember when I was complete, but it was very early. I have very average stats, even below avg for my MCAT. (3.7 GPA, 8PS, 11V, 10BS) I did write a very convincing (at least in my eyes) essay on why I want to be in Boston, and I do have great EC's....

I certainly was not expecting to get an interview here, at least not this early in the game. Then again, I think SDN attracts a lot of "top tier" applicants, so perhaps comparing myself to other SDN'ers isn't indicative of the applicant pool....

So, I've been following BU and they seem to go in a very straight progression of completion date. Strangely, I was complete before a lot of the rejections and a lot of the interview invited people, but have not yet been rejected, put on hold, or invited. I guess no news is better than good news though. To the person put on hold wondering about their chances, look at it this way; we have definitely seen that BU has NOOOO problem rejecting people. They seem to enjoy it, they do a hell of a lot of it. They rejected a significant portion of SDN before giving out their first interview. They are not shy about it...if they decided to continue reviewing you at all, they specifically chose to do this rather than just rejecting you. There must be a reason, so look at is a positive.

I haven't heard anything from BU either. I don't know if it's a non-stated hold for interview or if they just put my app in a smaller pool that isn't either rejected or interviewed or what, but I'm not going to worry about it. BU has offered interviews to a relatively small amount of people so far so maybe they're just slow in offering/scheduling interviews. As long as you aren't rejected outright you still have a shot.

All of this concern about BU makes me chuckle - other than the OP, I have never known anyone who really wanted to go to BU for med or dental school - if it were not located in a major east coast city, nobody would even be talking about it...there are some pretty unhappy people attending BU med as I recall from some thread around here last year...BU is hardly anybody's "dream" school, but it is on the east coast in a cool town and seems to have reasonable matriculant stats, so almost one out of every 3 people applying for med school in the US throws a primary app at them...

I wouldn't give BU a second thought if they rejected me pre-interview...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure many people are just applying there b/c of the location. My brother is a resident at Brigham and I did undergrad in Boston so I wouldn't mind going back there and the location definitely played a part in why I applied. They're moving up in the rankings as well, though, so that might play a part.
