How do you think changing from a BS to BA would affect my interview/acceptance chances?

I am considering it because it requires 2 extra classes (still same amount of labs and such but 2 extra classes that will probably be unrelated to anything im interested in.

reason is due to poor health of a family member in another country. I want to go home for a week so that my parents can go (we have a small self-run business that can't be left) and also go for a week myself. I know missing 2 weeks of school for that will only work if I have less credits to worry about.

What do you think? Should I ask the school what their opinion is about my potential acceptance? Or will asking alone ruin my chances? I am def willing to complete the BS if it will affect me negatively (i can always pick up the last course over the summer and still graduate on time... or work something else out...)... but since I have finished all my prereqs and have also taken upper level bios at this point.. id ont see the point in taking classes like marine bio and biotechnology.

What od you think. Honest opinions please.

I have a BA it does not matter... the only reason why i choose a ba was because i had to take less class and still maintain a higher gpa w/out taking the unnecessary engineering classes...
it will not affect your interviews

you don't even need to graduate with a degree with alot of schools. just 90 credits . so don't worry about it get your ba and u should be fine =)

Maybe for bragging rights

That is a load off... I suppose I will still contact the schools to be sure. (I did post expected to graduate with BS in May 2009). Don't want to seem like I am hiding something.

Thanks guys!!

My school only offers B.A's unless your in the nursing program. There is no difference. Your fine.

From what my advisors and professors told me, a BS is not necessary if you do not plan on pursuing the research field, meaning you don't plan on getting your MS and pHD. Thus BA is sufficient enough for medical, dental, pharm, pa, rn, etc.

For sure don't get a BA!! It will ruin your chances in getting into D-School!

Bacheolar of Arts? Who want's to take a bunch of art classes?? Who cares if Picasso cut off his ear? Also, learning how to paint a picture or work with oil based paints will not make you a better dentist.

Trust me, you gotta get a BS.

Sciency courses > Artsy-fartsy classes!

😉

PS almost all my interviewers told me that theres a new study saying that the better dentists were the non science undergrad majors =)

to the OP, I was a BS and switched to BA, not an issue, was actually the best advice I took from an awesome dentist

I have a BA, it doesn't matter. And everyone knows its not art classes, the only difference is less lab time. 6 hours in my case. At my school a BA means I could also have a minor, which in my case means I had MORE science classes. Plus I got to take foreign language which is a plus for me, and some business and econ courses which are a plus for running a practice. Do what seems right.

PS. I know PDiz was being sarcastic.

What no one has mentioned you indicated on your application that you're pursuing the more more science rigorous degree and now want to change it into a BS. BS and BA are not the same (but they both get the job done- if you want to call it that). I would finish what you stated in your application, weather it was a BS, BA, or no degree. Do what your interviews/acceptances were contigent on!

Hey everyone. Problem resolved. I worked it out by taking independent study as the needed credits so I have leeway with my time!
