Hi everyone,

I graduated with my BS in Architecture. I started my internship and I'm not liking the profession too much. I want to go back to school and pursue Pharmacy. The Architecture curriculum did not include many science classes, and I graduated with a 3.25 overall GPA.

I was wondering if you guys have any advice on how I should pursue taking the required classes to apply into Pharmacy school? Should I get another BS in Chem or Biochem? Or can I just focus on the required classes and take the PCAT?

And how important is overall GPA from a different non-science major? Since I don't have many science classes and I do well in those now, does the science GPA weigh more than the cumulative GPA? What is a competitive science/cGPA?

Thanks for your help.

You don't need to get another degree, just take the required prereqs. I would look into a few schools that you think you would like to go to and focus on taking their prereqs. The PCAT would also be a good thing to do.

As far as GPA, they will look at both overall and either math/science or prereq. Overall will include all classes you've taken in your college career. I'm not positive, but I think each school is different on how much importance they put on each.

As has already been stated - you only need Pre-Req courses for pharmacy school. Your BS will help your admissions (You are an accomplished/experienced student).

Search this forum - it has a lot of useful information - if you still cannot find your answer - Feel free to post.

Hi. I am in the same boat as you, but when i did talk to various admissions reps they said after completing pre-reqs, try to do some upper division science courses at a 4 year university. they want to see that even though you are not a science major that you can still be challeneged academically...and like the person before me said...you should have a BS or BA degree prior to admission to a school of pharmacy. eventhough they say you dont, you really should. If you dont..then you better be a genius with a ton of experience and volunteer work!

good luck!!

and one last thing..when they take your GPA, if you have repeated classes the individual schools (at least western univ of health sciences, USC, UOP - california schools) they re caclulate your GPA with repeated classes. So what pharmcas reports may be slightly differnt than what the schools see.

Thanks for responding guys! I'm just so confused. RXFanatic, i was wondering where you are now in the process of taking the pre-reqs? If you are taking them, are you taking them at a community college? As a Non-Degree seeking or through which status? Thanks. And just curious, what did you major in? =)

hi there.
im in a similar situation except i have a BA in psychology.
now im in my first semester of prepharm reqs.
im not sure if chem/bio degrees are favored (i doubt it) but pharmacy schools do state that they accept people with non-chem/bio degrees.
it may actually make you stand out from all the bio/chem people.
i actually did a little preparing as a psych major and focused on the biopsyc side so i have upper division psych courses such as cognitive neuroscience, biopsychology, psychopharmacology (my favorite 🙂 ), etc.
i also just took the PTCB exam today, so having some pharm tech experience will also be a plus.
do all you can to add to your degree and prepharm reqs.
good luck. 👍

BS in Interior Design, with no problem getting in to pharmacy school - 2, in fact; the only 2 I applied to. Both interviewers loved the fact that I wasn't 'another..... chemistry-type..... applicant'....sorry to those out there (you're awesome too!)!

PM me, and we can talk more.

DrugDoc, You're at my goal.

I'm in the sameboat at ssddme. I have a B.S. in Hotel Mgm't. Hopefully, the customer service experience will help me. I have 5 years of pharmacy experience working in my father's store as a teenager. (I'm trying to get current experience.) I'm in the midst of taking Creighton's prereqs. I"m a military spouse, so once I saw Creigton's program, I decided to go back to school. Thanks for your post, b/c it's so motivating to me. If I do get into Creighton, though, I'll be starting when you'll be graduating.
